We had chosen a very hot week in February, but the lovely facilities at Diprose Park ensured we were all able to enjoy our morning cuppa and chat under the shade. A big thank you to our very capable President, Betty Hull, for organising and preparing everything on the day. Also to Joan Olden for the close attendance to the boiling urns and especially to all the people in Tambellup who came out to hear a little of our CWA activities.

Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Joanne (Jo) Trezona, accepts her Meritorious Award for long service of a high degree to Local Government and Local Government Managers Australia [LGMA] (WA), from LGMA State President, Dr Shayne Silcox, FLGMA. Jo was bestowed this prestigious honour in 2011 and, due to a delay in presentation opportunities, was presented with the Award at a regional LGMA meeting held in Denmark recently. Several criteria are used to assess eligibility for Meritorious Awards; Jo’s outstanding leadership with the amalgamation of the Shires of Broomehill and Tambellup, her long service to the Advisory Board, work with the Great Southern branch of the LGMA and her participation in the CEO Support Program were highly regarded by the selection panel. Junior Cricket 2012/13 Another year of Junior Cricket was celebrated on Thursday 21st at Broomehill. This year’s award winners were - Fairest & Best – Lewis Barrit Most Improved - Mitchell Dewar Coaches Award – Flynn Cristinelli. With the addition of Tambellup boys, up to 20 young cricketers could be seen training and playing during November and February, with many representing the Great Southern in Association games on a Sunday. Thanks go to organiser & head coach Doug Barritt, Sam Richardson, Winton Nazzari and all the other helpers. See you all next season

Katanning Tennis Club Hosts the Great Southern Tennis Zone’s Junior Singles Tournament

The Great Southern Tennis Zone’s Junior Singles Tournament was held on Sunday 17th February at the Katanning Tennis Club. This event is one of the most popular and most significant on the Great Southern Tennis calendar. This year saw 35 individuals nominate within 3 age divisions being both for girls and boys. The event show cased each junior’s tennis ability as an individual, which is recognised and results help to select juniors into Zone competitions throughout the year. Encouragement and sportsmanlike behaviour from every participant was a highlight of the day, this being such a positive for the Zone.

The event was run as a Round Robin with every individual having at least 3 – 4 matches. The 14’s & under girls saw a fantastic competition between 3 Kojonup girls, playing each other twice in a Pro Set game. Rebecca Marinoni, Kelsey Wright and Annie-May Jannings set a competitive scene with Marinoni & Wright on equal sets won at the end of the competition, the winner being Rebecca Marinoni on a count back of games won.

Due to sixteen (16), 12 Years & Under boys nominating and only a few nominating within the 10’s and 14’s boys, all boys were placed within 4 groups with a semi final and final. Semi Finals for the 12’s & Under boys saw some exciting tennis with Jamie Marinoni (Kojonup) defeating Ted Batchelor (Broomehill), and Kaine Cristinelli (Tambellup) defeating Blake Watkins (Kukerin), this leaving Jamie Marinoni and Kaine Cristinelli to fight it out in the Final. The conditions were tricky for the final with the wind playing part; however both Marinoni and Cristinelli were able to adjust to the conditions, final outcome 5 – 0 to Cristinelli.

Tambellup Bowling Club COPORATE BOWLS A very successful season of Corporate Bowls was held during February. The Tambellup Bowl- ing Club was the place to be on Friday nights. The competition on the green was keen, fol- lowed by a great social atmosphere in the clubhouse until late in the evening.

Thanks to the sponsors Primaries, Tambellup CRC, Landmark, Bendigo Bank, QFH Multiparts and Jewelpani who were all great supporters of the event.

The competition was fierce at times with a different weekly winner on each of the four nights.

The final result saw the Bobalong team surge to the lead just getting in front of the Scotties, with the Shearers taking out the Next Years Winners title.

WOULD UP TO $200 PER CHILD HELP PAY FOR THEIR SPORTING CLUB FEES?

KidSport will assist eligible families to receive up to $200 annually for each of their children aged between 5 – 18 years, to subsidise fees to join a sport and recreation club. Eligible families include those with health care cards or pension concession cards, or those referred by other community groups such as schools, juvenile justice teams, government agencies and health practitioners. These groups are known as referral agents. The process for accessing KidSport is simple! Kids and parents/guardians can complete the application by picking one up from the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup office or their website. The parent/guardian fills in the application and takes it to be validated at the local government they reside in. A photocopy of the health care card or pension concession card must be attached. Alternatively, referral agents may assist in filling out the application, complete their section on the back and give it to the parent/guardian to sign. The parent/guardian will take the voucher to the sport or recreation club for processing when registering their children. The club will then invoice the Shire.
