Chuck Wright Chuck Wright Chuck Wright’s résumé reads like a who’s who of music. In addition to countless sessions, world tours and even art directing covers for a number CD releases, Wright has been a member of several successful bands. Right out the gate, he was with Quiet Riot in 1983 when they released their multi-platinum album Metal Health. Wright later joined Giuffria who scored an AOR hit with “Call to the Heart” in early 1985. This break lead to extensive touring with Deep Purple and Foreigner. Leaving Giuffria, Wright returned to Quiet Riot, and also recorded with Ted Nugent. He then put together House of Lords, the first band signed to Gene Simmons’ eponymously named record label. HOL toured the States and Europe extensively, and Wright left after their second album, Sahara, which featured the #1 most requested song on Rock radio with their cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” The 90s and 2000s found the bassist diversifying his palette, reaching beyond rock into realms of reggae, rap, country, new age and film scoring which included working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. With over 80 International record releases, Wright’s reputation as one of the most sought after bass players has landed him working with such music icons as Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons, Slash, Gregg Allman, Carmine Appice, Ronnie Montrose, John Waite and Pat Travers. Wright’s association with Heaven & Earth goes back to the very beginning. He is featured on the band’s two previous efforts, Heaven & Earth Featuring Stuart Smith and Windows to the World, so it was a natural progression for him to play on Dig and firmly establish himself as Heaven & Earth’s bass player. Ever the optimist, Wright says 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year. “I'm expecting the band to be on a tour with a major headliner and making waves on terrestrial radio and the Internet. Quarto Valley, our label, is really behind us and will do whatever it takes to give this music a chance. I’m really looking forward to seeing it all unfold.” .

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • The Hot Chicks of Rock
The Hot Chicks of Rock The adrenaline rush of Super Bowl week has started to kick in and it is starting to feel like I’m on a Benzedrine overload. Late night and early morning spent reading the re-writes of the previous days blurbs that all blend together to the point that the only thing I remember is something in I read stating that Bill Belichick will murder Tom Coughlin. Whatever your feelings are on football, it is still a great excuse to throw a party. As far as Super Bowl Parties go, it is tough to top the PVD Social Club’s bill of a matinee punk rock headlined by iconic stalwarts of loud hard and fast, the Hudson Falcons and Boston’s The Ducky Boys (Record Release Party for Chasing the Ghost). The bill is also features Pinkerton Thugs, Drunk Robb and The Shots, and Reason to Fight. The show is all ages and will not interfere with watching the game because it starts at 2PM– so if you are like me, set an alarm, or two. Not only is this the perfect way to release some pre-show aggression but you can stay or come for the game, which will be shown on huge projection screens throughout the entire club. At halftime, there will be a burlesque show so you have something more enticing than watching a washed up Madonna and there will be complementary appetizers served. Seriously, Madonna playing the Super Bowl, what diehard football fan wants to see that? Speaking of burlesque, with Valentine’s Day around that corner, it is time for our 5th annual Hot Women in Local Rock to celebrate this special day, well for single males and women in relationships.
