On May 24. 1984 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania officially granted University status to La Salle College.

The name La Salle University may take some time getting used to. but the institution will continue to serve the community as it has since its founding in 1863.

"As our destiny is in our own hands, there is every reason to be confident that we can retain and enhance ouremphasison the excellent teaching of undergraduates and on the relaxed accessibility of faculty and administrators to students," said La Salle President Brother Patrick Ellis. "Class size, activities, availability of computers and the like should not change except for the better."

Founded by the Brothers of Christian Schools, La Salle is named for St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers. The institution which began as a one- building academy in city Philadelphia is now a 78- acre, 36-building campus in Philadelphia's Germantown sec- tion.

The La Salle day and evening faculty numbers 212 with degree programs offered in Arts, Science and Business. With a student-faculty ratio of 16-to-1 and an average class size of The athletic department is housed in Hayman Hall. The

According to a recent survey, La Salle ranked in the top 6% nationally among pri- vate undergraduate institutions originating Ph.D.'s (58th of 943 colleges and universities).

"I am certain that as a university, La Salle not only will con- tinue, but expand, that tradition of excellence," said Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh on granting University Status to La Salle.

It is a tradition that is being renewed by La Salle University. . PRESIDENT BROTHER F. PATRICK ELLIS. F.S.C.. Ph.D.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BILL BRADSHAW

Bill Bradshaw has been a success in several fields, as a college and professional baseball player, college coach, and now as Director of Athletics at La Salle University.

A 1969 graduate of La Salle, Bradshaw was named Director of Athletics and Recreation at his alma mater in December, 1977.

Under his leadership, the La Salle athletic program has expanded to 21 varsity sports, championships in two conferences, and appearances in post-season championship competition in several sports. In the fall of 1983, Explorer teams switched to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference from the East Coast Conference, which meant all new schedules and opponents for every team. La Salle's men and women responded by winning the Commissioner's Cup for overall conference athletic superiority for both the 1983-84 and 1984-85 school years.

This success after a major change in scheduling showed the solidity of La Salle's athletic programs under Bill Bradshaw. In addition, La Salle athletes maintained a graduation rate of 90%, a stronger testament to the overall program. Bradshaw was a second baseman during his collegiate baseball days, captaining X i the 1969 La Salle team and finishing his career with a .415 batting average as a senior, and a .362 career average. He played minor league baseball in the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers chain, with a career .315 average before a broken ankle ended his playing career.

Before returning to La Salle, he earned a master's degree in guidance and coun- seling from . He also coached the Purple Eagle baseball team for two years, leading the 1974 team to a school record 29 victories. While Bradshaw was residing in Niagara Falls, NY, of which he is a native, he also coached an American Legion team to the 1971 New York State Championship, featuring Rick Manning at shortstop, now an All-Star Milwaukee Brewers out- fielder. The 38-year-old Bradshaw was elected president of the Eastern Association during the summer of 1985, and will serve in that capacity for two years. He is also Chairman of both the MAAC Men's Basketball and Men's and Women's Swimming Games Committees. During the summer of 1985, he was one of five American college athletic directors to serve as a Director of the first

Shamrock Games, held in Ireland. He is the third Director of Athletics at La Salle, succeeding Jim Henry (1941-1969) and Jack Conboy (1969-1977). ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL

Lefty Ervin has been an important part of La Salle's basketball success since he played his first varsity game in 1965. After graduating in 1968, he joined the coaching staff, working with Tom Gola (1968-1970), then with (1970- 1977). In that time, La Salle had three 20-win seasons and played in two NCAA Tournaments.

After the 1977 season, Lefty became head coach at La Salle High School, leading the Little Explorers into the Catholic League playoffs in his second season. Two years later, on August 30, 1979, he was named the 15th head coach at his alma mater.

His first season produced a 22-9 NCAA Tournament team behind college basketball's Player of the Year Michael Brooks. Inexperienced teams won more than they lost during the next two seasons, and the Explorers returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1983 as East Coast Conference champions. A 70-58 preliminary-round NCAA victory over Boston University was La Salle's first post-season triumph since the 1955 team led by Tom Gola beat Iowa in the NCAA Tournament semifinals.

Lefty's 105 wins in his first six seasons as head coach is a record bettered only by Hall of Fame coach Ken Loefflerin La Salle records. In fact, 105 victories in six seasons has been topped by only two other coaches in the 30-year history of Philadelphia's Big Five.

Lefty was a two-sport athlete as a La Salle undergraduate. As a senior he captained both the basketball and baseball teams. He completed his three-year basketball career with 756 points, an average of 9.9 points for 76 games, with a single- game high of 31 points against Syracuse as a sophomore. He was a right-handed relief pitcher for three seasons in base- ball, finishing with a 7-8 record and a 3.27 earned run average in 26 games. His 12 pitching appearances during the 1966 season stood as a school record for 13 years.

As a La Salle senior, Lefty Ervin was awarded the Joseph Schmitz, Jr. Award as the senior who best exemplified the high traditions of La Salle in loyalty, sportsmanship and awarded that group's first "Class Act Award," for cooperation courage. His adult life has been dedicated to La Salle as with the media. It was a special tribute to a head coach who is player and coach, putting the meaning of the Schmitz Award respected around the country for his availablity and coopera-
