Urbain population: 65% (35% rural population) Several studies were carried out on waste. The following data represent the annual productions;
Household waste: 2,2 million T/year (0.5 kg/pers/j)
Industrial Hazardous waste: 150.000 T/year
Health Care Waste : 16.000 T/year
Plastic packingWaste : 55.000 T/year Tunisia has recorded, during the last decades a considerable economic growth, which increased pressure on the ecosystems and an overexploitation of the natural resources. In order to face these problems, Tunisia has gradually developed a policy of environmental protection founded on a sustainable development. 4 Legal framework: The Tunisian regulations regarding management of waste are: Organic law n°95-68 Framework law n°96-41 relating to waste and the control of their management and their elimination. Decree n° 97-1102 fixing the conditions and the procedures of resumption, management and valorization of used packaging, the public system ECO-LEF; Decree n° 23-39 of October 10th, 2000 fixing the list of hazardous industrial waste; Decree n° 693-2002 of April 1st, 2002 fixing the conditions and the procedures of management of lubricating oils and filters; Decree n° 3395-2005 of December 26th, 2005 fixing the conditions and the procedures of collection of worn accumulators and batteries. Transfer Station Within the Clean Development Mechanism Kyoto Protocol The Tunisian Government contracted two ERPAs to sell 50% of CERs which will be generated in the 10 controlled Landfills under operation (to the World Bank: 3.7Mteq CO2.
REHABILITATION OF DUMPS PROGRAM
rehabilitation of greater dumps: 9 dumps(Bizerte, Nabeul, Hammamet, Sousse, Hammam-Sousse, Monastir, Sfax, Gabes, Jerba) rehabilitation of small and average dumps: Approximately 140 dumps in Bizerte, Nabeul, Sousse, Monastir, Kairouan, Sfax, Gabes, Medenine and Jerba Investment Costs: 10 million Eur (National Budget) About 06 million Eur within the framework of WB financing 14 15 16 INDUSTRIAL HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT Main Objectives
To ensure the suitable treatment and the elimination of the industrial and special waste, by respect the environmental standards and the regulations in force. to make producers and/or holders of industrial and special waste respect the law and legal framework, for suitable elimination.
