VIKING BASKETBALL HISTORY VIKING BASKETBALL HISTORY ortland State basketball began along with the formation of Vanport Extension Center in P 1946. John Jenkins was the first head coach for Vanport that year. He was followed by Joe Hol- land, then Arba Ager, who led Vanport to its first 20-win season in 1949-50. That same year, Vanport became a member of the Oregon Collegiate Con- ference. Little reference material remains from the early days of Viking basketball, however the Vikings pieced together six wins in their first season of competition. Originally a two-year college, Vanport played four-year schools, junior colleges and some AAU teams. Coach Arba Ager led Vamport to Oregon Collegiate Conference titles in 1951 and 1952. Ager won more than 60 percent of his games in five seasons as head coach. Sharkey Nelson took over the Vikings in 1953 and began a 12-year run that included three OCC titles and two trips to the NAIA playoffs before the end of the decade. It was not until 1955 that Vanport became Portland State College, a four-year school. During that time, the Vikings still scrambled for a home John Nelson (above) was the first Vi- venue, playing many games in high school gyms, in particular, the closely located Lincoln High School. king to score 2,000 career points... until Paul Poetsch, John Winters, Jack Parker, Jack Freeman Williams (left) arrived a decade Viskov and Jim Perkin were just a few of the stars later. Free went on to score more points from the Nelson era.

  • This Is Cowboy Basketball
This is Cowboy Basketball " What it means to me to put on a Cowboy uniform and play in the Arena-Auditorium is kind of indescribable. To play at the only Division I university in the entire state, and not only that but to play at the same place both of my parents played, is amazing. I get goose bumps just walking into the Arena-Auditorium for practice, not even a game. I can't tell you how great I feel about putting on the Brown and Gold and having the opportunity to be a Cowboy. It is truly amazing and I thank God everyday that I get to be a part of something bigger than me."” Adam Waddell, Cody, Wyo. Sophomore Center The 1943 NCAA Champion Wyoming Cowboys. WINNING TRADITION owboy Basketball tradition is a rich one, including an NCAA National Championship team, a former coach who is WINNING a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, an All-American who is credited with one of the greatest innovations in C the history of the game and one of the most memorable players in NCAA history. In 1943, the University of Wyoming was led to the NCAA Championship by legendary coach Everett Shelton. Shelton’s 1943 Cowboy squad defeated Georgetown in the NCAA Championship game in Madison Square Garden. Two nights later, also in Madison Square Garden, the Cowboys earned the right to call themselves undisputed National Champions as they defeated that year’s NIT Champion, St. John’s University, in a game benefi tting the Red Cross. In 1982, Coach Shelton’s memory was immortalized with the highest honor in basketball — induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfi eld, Mass.

Administration IN THIS SECTION . University of Washington ........................... 140 Seattle – The Emerald City ......................... 142 Barbara Hedges .......................................... 144 Senior Administrative Staff ........................ 146 Basketball Support Staff .............................149 HUSKY ADMINISTRATION THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the foremost institutions of higher education in the nation, richly combining its research, instruc- tional and public service missions. Its internationally acclaimed faculty includes five Nobel laureates and the winner of the 1990 National Book Award for fiction. Washington is part of an elite group of research universities whose contributions to American life are unique because they generate the basic knowledge upon which practical innovations are based. The UW student body on the Seattle campus totals about 37,000, with an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 26,800. The UW also has campuses in Bothell and Tacoma, designed primarily for upper division (junior and senior) undergraduates and master’s level graduate programs. Total enrollment at these campuses is about 3,600. For more than 30 years, the university has been among the country’s top five institutions in the dollar value of federal research grants and contracts awarded to its faculty. In 2001, the most recent year for which that data has been collected, the UW ranked second overall and first among public universities. Total grant and contract activity for 2002 exceeded $800 million. More than 80 percent of the university’s grant and contract funds come from federal agencies. Research contrib- utes directly to the educational goals of graduate and professional students, as well as to those of undergraduates. Instruction and research at Washington are supported by a library system that is one of the most extensive in the nation, consisting of five major units and 18 branches, as well as libraries at UW Tacoma and UW Bothell, together housing more than five million volumes.
