In August we will be planting 700 trees courtesy of The Dept of Conservation, and in agreement with Ngati Rangiwewehi, so all hands on deck would be really appreciated for this day. We will be planting regardless of the weather. Last year we planted over 1000 trees in less than 3 hours thanks to all those who turned up, and also our guys who started early to prepare the ground ready for the planters. We will be doing the same again this year. Come join us, 9.00am start, meet in the carpark for our Health & Safety talk and registration, bring gloves, spades, buckets, and your lunch and a drink. Dear Son, Just a few lines to let you know I’m still alive. I’m writing this letter slowly because I know you can’t read fast. We are all doing very well. You won’t recognize the house when you get home - we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved. I won’t be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn’t have to change their address. This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I’m not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven’t seen them since. Your father’s got a really good job now. He’s got 500 men under him.. He’s cutting the grass at the cemetery. Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven’t found out if it’s a boy or a girl, so I don’t know whether you are an auntie or an uncle. Your brother Tom is still in the army. He’s only been there a short while and they’ve already made him a court martial! Your Uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whisky in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cremated him and it took three days to put out the fire. I’m sorry to say that your cousin Seamus was arrested while riding his bicycle last week. They are charging him with dope peddling. I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him. The weather isn’t bad here. It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days. Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times. We had a letter from the undertaker. He said if the last payment on your grandmother’s plot wasn’t paid in seven days, up she comes. About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets. John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out. Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn’t get the tailgate down. There isn’t much more news at this time.... Nothing much has happened… Your loving Mum. P.S. I was going to send you some money but I had already sealed the envelope.

One thing I need to introduce to the debate is that Taupo has 2 of its 3 water supplies fluoridated and I note from the statistics from the last census that the demographic make up of Taupo is way different to that of Rotorua. In Taupo they have 8 decile 1 areas, Rotorua has 1 and Audio & TV Repairs & Installations of the 38 mesh blocks in Rotorua 18 are either decile 9 or 10 and in Taupo only 4 are in that statistic. (HGC) article. As per usual here is a golf story to start with.

A minister decides to wag church on a Sunday morning and go and play golf instead. He sneaks out on his own and gets a one under par birdie for each of the first five holes. The best golf he has ever played. One of the angels observes this and asks God, “Are you going to let this slide? You should do something.” So God says “Watch this.” The minister tees up on the next hole which is a par three and the ball rolls into the hole for a hole in one at which the angel says “Why did you reward him? He is playing the best golf of his life.” You can easily sort out your firewood with the single day hire of God replies, “Yes, I know that, but who is he going to tell?” this wood splitter for just $99. Call John or Judith On 350-1018 or 0274 782 338 31 White Street, Rotorua 1st Ngongotahā Scouts - Trip to Whakapapiti hut. It was a small but enthusiastic group of Scouts that met at DOC’s Whakapapa information centre on Saturday 5 July. After spending a few minutes purchasing hut tickets and dividing up the load of food and equipment the group headed up the Bruce Road to “Scoria Flats” car park. The weather forecast predicted improving conditions which was good because the cloud level was very low, and a stiff cold breeze was blowing from the south west. Walking through the freshly fallen snow was a novel experience for most of the Scouts and it was all good fun even with the odd tumble resulting from the deceptively deep snow. After a two hours walking the group arrived at the Whakapapaiti Hut. It was pleasing to find the hut’s previous inhabitants had left it clean and tidy. Even better, the wood burning stove was still warm! Following lunch, the group walked down the valley to the first major river crossing of the following days tramp. By this time an icy drizzle had set in so the group briefly discussed the pro’s and con’s of river crossings and decided we would not cross the river in this condition, then returned to the hut. That evening the hut reverberated to sound of several lively and noisy card games and judging from the “sleep-talking” some of the rules were still being questioned during dreams later that night. Sunday morning dawned clear and calm. The snow had frozen hard overnight presenting very slippery conditions. The 8km walk down-river to Whakapapa would be a good option in the summer, during fine weather, but having seen the river crossing the previous day the leaders decided the group would back-track to “Scoria Flats” car park. The view of the mountains and surrounding country was absolutely stunning and the return trip was made in good time and without mishap. A quick trip up the road to “The top of the Bruce”, a hot-dog in the car park, then a bunch of tied but happy trampers headed back to Ngongotaha.

SPORSTALK. Commonwealth games As I write this the opening ceremony has just been completed and what an honour for Val Adams carrying the flag into the stadium amongst the 200 NZs Athletes. She’s a ‘shots eye’ to win gold and do not be surprised if we break our record of medals. I’m expecting them in Bowls, Table Tennis, Swimming, shot put and I do hope Nick Willis wins a deserved gold in the 1500m. Rugby Oh well our beloved Chiefs missed out on the final in a great effort away from home. I think the Sharks v Crusaders final is the logical choice and the Sharks are going to take a pile of beating. I see Argentina are here soon to play the All Blacks. The tri series is about to begin and I trust that Dan Carter is up to the test environment. Richie MaCaw’s battered body surely can’t stand up to another World Cup. Brodie Retallick would have to be the player of the super 14 series. Great to see finally after all the BS going around that the All Blacks are going to play Samoa in Apia. Soccer. Great to see local Ngongotaha attracted a great crowd for the Chatham Cup game against Melville. Very young team Ngongotaha who are punching above their weight. Congrats to all concerned you have had a wonderful season. Have to say Germany deserved the World Cup even though I supported Holland and what a great tournament as goals were scored all over the place. The World Cup had everything biting, red cards, goal line technology, Hollywood diving often ignored thank God, superb referees and wonderful venues. The Brazil Nation must be so proud of what the tournament delivered in terms of a spectacle. Must say why do Soccer referees put up with the comments from the players I’d march them 20 meters and watch it stop.

At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, ‘Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?’ The little boy nodded in the affirmative. ‘Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?’ The little boy nodded ‘yes’. ‘So,’ the coach continued, ‘I’m sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn’t argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him names. Do you understand all that? ‘ The little boy nodded ‘yes’ again. He continued, ‘And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play too, it’s not good sportsmanship to call your coach “a dumb*&^% or *&^%head” is it?’ The little boy shook his head ‘NO’. ‘GOOD’, said the coach . . . ‘Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother!’

A trucker came into a truck stop cafe and placed his order. He said, “I want three flat tires, a pair of headlights and pair of running boards.” The brand new blonde waitress, not wanting to appear stupid, went to the kitchen and said to the cook, “This guy out there just ordered three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards. What does he think this place is, an auto parts store?” “No,” the cook said. “Three flat tires mean three pancakes, a pair of headlights is two eggs sunny side up, and running boards are 2 slices of crisp bacon.” “Oh, OK!” said the blonde. She thought about it for a moment and then spooned up a bowl of beans and gave it to the customer. The trucker asked, “What are the beans for, Blondie?” I LOVE THIS ONE . . . .. She replied, “I thought while you were waiting for the flat tires, headlights and running boards, you might as well gas up!” Progress Ngongotaha Kokiri Ngongotaha Inc recently held an Open Forum meeting to discuss matters of particular importance to our community; e.g. traffic and parking problems; finding a home for Oasis Youth; continuing closure of businesses, promoting Ngongotaha as a Heritage Destination; beautification of streets and the Lake Reserve; the Consent for the Landfill dump site next to our river, and of course, the fate of the Lightning Bolt. The meeting began with the lively entrance, 45 minutes early, of a very excited chap waving a petition and the front page of the latest Ngo News, and demanding to know if this was the Protest Meeting! He also promised us another petition from one of the local shops with 700 more signatures on it. He was assured that this was simply a Public Consultation meeting but he was not the only attendee who had not read past the first page of the paper; had not seen our article and advertisement; had not read the mail drop flier in their letterboxes and had not seen any of the big posters around Ngongotaha. And therefore attended the meeting under a misapprehension. Merepeka Raukawa-Tait gave an inspirational vision of the future Ngongotaha – “From Good to Great” and various members then gave background information on some of Ngongotaha’s pressing issues. It soon became obvious that none of these were of interest to the majority of people attending, and so MC Charles Sturt introduced the Main Event – the Terry Stringer sculpture. The Chair explained the coincidences that led to the sculpture being offered to Ngongotaha and Bob Martin gave a history of electricity in Ngongotaha and why this might therefore be the logical place for the Lightning Bolt. Then followed a general discussion which ended with the call from MC Sturt for a show of hands; “that PNKNInc investigate a suitable site in Ngongotaha for the Lightning Bolt.” The Public meeting had been preceded by Progress Ngongotaha Kokiri Ngongotaha Inc Annual General Meeting and the Officers duly elected are; Chair; L Benfell. Dep Chair; G Hall. Treas; C Newcombe. Sec; H McKechnie Committee; L Thompson, P Dalton, M Evans, R Martin.

Progress Ngongotaha Kokiri Ngongotaha Inc was delighted to see so many new faces at the meeting although many people assured us that they had lived in Ngongotaha for 30, 40 even 50 years. The bad news from the whole evening was that nobody cared about the Landfill or Oasis Youth or Commerce dying in Ngongotaha; however the good news is that without that Ngo News front page, nobody would have come to the meeting at all!

Progress Ngongotaha meets 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Ngongotaha Community Hall. Meetings are open to the public.

Fathers’ Day, Sunday Sept 7th, 10am – 3pm is the next Farmers Market at the Railway Park, in conjunction with the Rotorua Ngongotaha Railway Park. If you want to busk or sell crafts, produce etc, please contact the Railway Park Manager, Ann Egglestone 357 5484. Stalls $20 Car Boot $10. All proceeds for car boot and stalls are used for future community events and activities.

And that show of hands? 18 in favour; 6 against.

The Cornerstone Value for the term is Consideration. Our definition is ‘Willingness to be kind and thoughtful and to consider the interest of others before yourself. This means thinking of others.

Many of you will have noticed the appearance of a large Kaharoa School sign on Tauranga Direct Road (just before the Kaharoa Road turn off. Up-coming events will be displayed at the bottom of this sign. For this information and up to date information about what is happening at Kaharoa, please visit our webpage at www. kaharoa.school.nz

LICENSED (REAA 2008) LICENSED (REAA 2008) rwrotorua.co.nz Mamaku’s Frosts no Longer Something to Fear On the day I moved to Rotorua in July, 1965, the ‘Daily Post’ - that well-respected mine of news and information reported that “Rotorua had just recorded its 75th frost of the year’! Shock! Horror! Probe! It also reported that a rugby match, to be played, in National Park, had had to be cancelled because of the depth of snow on the field. Mamaku’s frosts were not mentioned - probably just as well. That was then and this is now – last year, frosts in Mamaku barely reached double figures; this year the number is higher, the frosts are colder (one report of minus 8 degrees) and they were earlier but far, far less than were ever recorded in the Sixties. Then, (in the Sixties) when conditions were freezing which they were often, the trip over the ‘Mamakus’ was something close to an ordeal. Several times I saw the immortal Ernie Leonard gasping for a coffee after driving home from a conference somewhere and recounting the climb at night over the ice-ridden Mamaku Plateau. Closer to the village, one treacherous bend on the Dansey, on one day alone was responsible for the demise of 23 cars. A local farmer used his tractor to pull all 23 out – damage and injuries were not recorded. In spite of mammoth upgrades to the road the same spot, one Winter’s day two or three years ago, claimed a police car whose driver, clearly, didn’t appreciate the subtleties of that particular bend. RDC staff deserve a lot of merit for the care they take when the road is iced-up which it can be still. Cr. Sturt and the RDC are to be thanked for including the cost in their estimates to provide grit in the early morning. A local who drives to work at around 5.00 am finds the grit truck has already spread its contents along the ice patches. So in spite of our frequent protestations we do get many benefits from our rates.
