NGONGOTAHA NEWS The Sunny side of the Mountain - FLUORIDE FREE NGONGOTAHA Editor Ann Henderson Email: [email protected] Mob: 027 2379 204 website: www.ngongotahanews.co.nz NEXT DEADLINE: Tue 11 December 11am - November 2018 Issue

THANK YOU - Thank you to all my friends residents supporters for you messages regarding my huge fight I had to get better again. I must pay a tribute to my loyal local General Practitoner, Dr Simon Firth for going beyond the call of duty to support me and make me aware of the diagnoses, treatment options and health advice. When faced with being unwell one must have confidence in those advising you and the advice you're given. I must also say the "crap" Hospital gets and is often highlighted in the media as being far from a positive experience. I have had excellent treatment both here in Rotorua and from Orthopaedic specialist, and Mr Dass the Oncologist, together with the experts at the Katherine Kilgour Centre in Tauranga. I think it comes down to ones attitude and I have seen nurses, doctors, X-ray staff all treated badly by patients and families of those getting treatment. It’s not on for abuse. One thing that’s kept me focussed on getting well has been gardening as you will see from my posts on Facebook. My council work, my passion has not been neglected and support from Mayor Chadwick, Crs Hunt, Donaldson, Raukawa-Tait, Tapsell, and my long time friend and colleague Trevor Maxwell together with CEO Geoff Williams can’t be under stated. My wife Denise, whom I married 40 years ago together with our daughter Elizabeth (who visited me everyday) our sons, William ( who lives in Brisbane) and Cameron who lives at home have been unbelievably supportive and understanding. The birth of our third grandson (named Hunter) in Brisbane to Crystal and William Sturt has also been a huge focus and news from Elizabeth and son in law James Coppard that they care expecting a third grandchild from them in March gave me new goals to focus on. Our two grandsons Charlie nearly 5 and Finley nearly 2, keep you on your toes. As the article in the daily post stated I do not want sympathy but I have immense empathy with the hundreds of people in our local community fighting similar issues in their health. I just wanted to say your not alone, be positive, surround yourself with those that really matter, listen to your health Practioners and fight. Again thank you to everyone for your love messages and best wishes believe me you are sincerely appreciated. Photo above of Charles and two of his Moko, Finlay and Charlie.

5 Ngongotaha Indoor Bowls 24th September Presidents Night where we saw the leads play skip and the skips played lead. It was an enjoyable evening and a fun night. The winners were Wayne Hitchens and Martin Bertling and runner ups were John Rayner and Nicole Ruthe. NGONGOTAHA 1st October Fun night and prize giving. We all had to wear the colour red. Some members got right into it; we saw some amazing outfits and some just had a little bit of red. We were able to graze all night on goodies that we members brought. Cheryl made a lovely punch which went down a treat. We Open played bowls a bit different, one mat we had obstacle to go round, the other mat played with a tennis ball as our jack. Once 7 days we finished our bowling and having lots of fun and laughter we had prize giving and some members did not remember winning some of the events. That was including me and I am not a gold card holder as yet. The trophy winners were Curry Cup Graded Pairs Winner Cheryl Wiggins, Delwyn Hughes Runner Ups Murray Harris, Brian Ruthe. I think just about everyone went home with a prize. Well done for 2018. Roll on 2019. 8th October A.G.M All positions stayed the same. 12th October Lunch at Valentines Most of our members attended our lunch for end of year break up. We all signed a farewell card for one of our valued members Colin Hanson. It is very sad to see him leave our club. I will miss his help that I have had over the last three years, a big thank you to Colin. He is heading back to the big smoke. He did say he will be back to challenge John in a game. I think everyone was happy with the luncheon and went away with a full tummy. I know I did. We all will enjoy the break from bowls and be fired up for next year. I know it’s early but I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Anyone looking at playing bowls next season can contact: Cheryl Wiggins 07 3488118 Kevin Whyte 07 3574766 Women call me ugly occasionally. But that’s only until they hear how much money I make. Then they say I’m poor and ugly. I have a very good feeling about my job interview today. The manager said they were looking for somebody responsible. “You’ve found your man,” I responded, “whenever there was a problem in my last job, they always said that I was responsible!”

The one thing in common with them all from what I’ve seen is the supportive parents, grand parents and the wider family. WHHS has been ably led by Principals like Barrowman, Rundle, Waerea-Pelham and now Jim Gemmell who have created a safe, caring, family orientated, culturally supported environment with excellent staff and advisors who assist the students every day. Negativity or put downs can also have a huge impact on the lives of young people, but there are services at school like health and careers advisors ready to oblige their services. 19 20 Immigration – A fair go not a free ride.

In New Zealand we pride ourselves on being a pretty fair country. Hon Todd McClay We like to give people a fair go, but not a free ride.

MP for Rotorua That’s why the Government’s decision to grant Karel Sroubek residency is so baffling. He’s had more than a fair go and now Stop by my office, make an he’s getting a completely undeserved free ride. appointment, or call for a chat Sroubek is a convicted drug smuggler with gang associations. He came to New Zealand on a false passport and he has a violent E [email protected] past and is currently in prison. How he has managed to convince fb.com/ToddMcClayMPforRotorua the Government to let him stay is incomprehensible.

A 1301 Amohau Street Recently it was revealed the Immigration Minister had intervened P 07 348 5871 to allow Karel Sroubek to stay in New Zealand when he is released from prison rather than have him sent back to his native toddmcclay.co.nz Czech Republic, even though the Parole Board refused to grant him parole in the meantime.

In spite of the immense public interest and making a decision contrary to the public safety of New Zealanders, the Government is refusing to explain why.

When the story first came to public attention the Minister claimed he had “considered carefully” Mr Sroubek’s case before approving permanent residency and that it was “not a decision I have made lightly.”

Authorised by T. McClay, Parliament Buildings, Wellington. We now know that isn’t true. In parliament this month he admitted to making the decision less than an hour after receiving the file. Worse, he’s confessed to not even reading all the material contained in the file, only “parts” of it.

That’s an appalling process to make such an important decision, BERT WILLIAMSON and New Zealanders deserve to know why their safety has been put at risk.

There’s been a suggestion that it’s unsafe for him to return to the Czech Republic. That might well be a valid reason, except we know he’s travelled there from New Zealand several times.

People from all around the world want to live and work in New Zealand because of the opportunities here. They bring immense benefits to New Zealand, from skills and capital to new ideas and international connections.

I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of these people. These are people who have become part of our local community, been our neighbours or served on the local PTA.

Sadly there are also many law abiding hard working people who have not been able to get residency and who have had to leave New Zealand, some leaving family members behind

For the Immigration Minister to intervene and granted permanent residency to a convicted drug smuggler and fraudster with known links to organised crime, without even bothering to read the file is appalling - and he must reverse this decision.

The 0279547625 programme that has been extremely popular is our Supergold Skills Programme where we match up members who want some sort of maintenance done with our retired tradespeople and handypersons. This is normally a great deal less cost than hiring a normal tradesperson. Housing remains our number one concern amongst our elderly and the latest statistics do not read pretty reading especially if you are a renter entering your twilight years. In 1998 over 80% of those over 65 owned their own house and pretty much all of them were mortgage free and could live reasonable comfortably on the pension. In 2013 this number had dropped to 60% and with the current trend in 2020 there will only be about 40% who own their own home and the rest will be at the mercy of a very fickle rental market. Research will also tell us the barriers to social engagement which is the next major concern for the elderly. The top reasons in no particular order are: the lack of coordination between agencies dealing with aspects of growing old, health, including mental, loss of sight and hearing and mobility, transport and geography, personal independence or being shy and introverted, stigma around being lonely and financial considerations.

In October I attended a Symposium entitled “Successful Ageing” and the take home message was to remain as active as you can by involving yourself in your community, either in paid employment after 65, or as a volunteer. This is not only good for your soul but it keeps you socially engaged and is providing a much-needed service to your community. contd overpage......
