HAZRA Zoological Survey of India, M-Block, New Alipore, Kolkata-700 053, India INTRODUCTION As a result of the increasing interest paid to the recycling of wastewater, municipal wastes and sewage sludge in agricultural practice, it becomes necessary to study the uptake of heavy metals in invertebrates in general and earthworm in particular. It is evident that earthworm can accumulate heavy metals from surrounding polluted soils and other media in their body (Gish and Christensen, 1973; van Hook, 1974; van Rhee, 1975; Ireland, 1979, 1983; Ash and Lee, 1980; Beyer, 1981; Beyer et 01. 1982; Kruse and Barrett, 1985). But no such work has been carried out in India. To fill up this lacuna the present study has been conducted with the following objectives: To determine whether this dominant species of L. mauritii could be use to absorb the heavy metals in contaminated soil and to compare them with a less polluted controlled reserve forest floor. MATERIALS AND METHODS Earthworm samples were collected month wise at random by digging and hand sorting method. Collected samples were repeatedly washed in water and then kept in double distilled water for 72 hours to evacuate soil from its gut. After that period earthworm samples were preserved in 10% formalin. Preserved samples were washed in double distilled water and then oven dried at 65°C for 48 hours Dried samples were crushed, weighed on a microbalance and acid (Nitric and Perchloric) digested on a hot plate. -

Grooming activity in M. lamarrei is a complex pattern, which is streamlined into two major groups, Anterior Grooming (AG) and Posterior Grooming (PG), depending on the body area. Anterior grooming is broadly divided into Carapace Grooming (CG) and Ventral Cephalothorax Grooming (VCG) and Posterior Grooming is further divided into Ventral Abdomen Grooming (VAG) and Dorsal Abdomen Grooming (DAG). Prawns were exposed to 1.72 ppm of arsenic trioxide for 15 days and the dose was found to be non lethal. Therefore, we selected this non-lethal concentration for a 24 h exposure schedule to study different grooming patterns. We report for the first time that 1.72 ppm of arsenic trioxide induced notable auto-grooming alteration in this species and the prawns were found to spend considerably more time to groom each body part compared to the control. It is concluded that grooming patterns are reliable indices of stress or sensitivity towards heavy metals in aquatic invertebrates. -

The new species, M. miyakoense, is compared with other five stygiobiont species of the genus char- acterized by a reduced eye, i.e. M. cavernicola (Kemp, 1924), M. villalobosi Hobbs, 1973, M. acherontium Holthuis, 1977, M. microps Holthuis, 1978, and M. poeti Holthuis, 1984. It is the first representative of stygiobiont species of Macrobrachium from East Asian waters. Feeding habits of M. lar were studied using the index of preponderance and feeding intensity methods. Mainly organic detritus, supplemented by animal and plant materials formed the food in all stages of M. lar. The animal food items mainly consisted of aquatic insects, polychaetes, other crustaceans, fish, molluscs and zooplankton. The plant matter was chiefly composed of fragments of aquatic plants, planktonic algae and diatoms. Variation in diet in relation to size, sex or season were found insignificant. Though, all size groups of this species feed animal and plant materials, it exhibited slight preference for animal food especially in larger size groups. Females appear to feed more actively than the males. Feeding intensity was more in monsoon season compared to dry season. Results indicate that the adults are mostly predators of slow moving benthic invertebrates rather than detritus feeders/scavengers. -

Jimoh*, Edwin O. Clarke, Olusegun O. Whenu and Haleemah B. Adeoye Department of Fishery, Lagos State University, Lagos State, Nigeria. Accepted 23 November, 2010 The study investigated the stomach contents of Macrobrachium vollenhovenii from the commercial artisanal catches in Epe Lagoon in Lagos, southwest Nigeria from July to October 2008 and April to May 2009. The stomach analysis was carried out using frequency of occurrence and numeric methods. It was observed that the prawn fed on a variety of plankton species, which included chlorophyta, euglenophyta, xantophyta, chrysophyta, cladocera, copepoda, protozoa, dinoflagellate, diatoms, insect parts and unidentified food items, with chlorophyta and diatoms forming the most important food items. Chlorophyta constituted 32.00% by number and 83.62% by occurrence, diatoms constituted 31.55% by number and 65.09% by occurrence. Amongst the chlorophyta, Cosmarium granatum was the most preferred, constituting 7.93% by number and 17.67% by occurrence, followed by Ankistrodemus falcatus with 7.57% by number and 16.38% by occurrence, respectively. The least eaten food item was insect parts. The results indicated that M. vollenhovenii can be considered as an omnivorous detritivore. Read Full License Page 1/27 Abstract Background: The better understanding of male sexual differentiation and development mechanism of M. nipponense is urgently needed, in order to maintain the sustainable development of M. nipponense industry. In the present study, we aimed to identify the key genes and metabolites involved in the male sexual differentiation and development of M. nipponense through performing the integrated analysis of metabolomes and transcriptomes of testis between the reproductive season and non-reproductive season. Results: A total of 385 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and 12,230 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identied. Glycerophospholipid metabolism and Sphingolipid metabolism were predicted to have dramatic effects on male sexual differentiation and development in M. nipponense, based on the integrated analysis of metabolomes and transcriptomes. According to the KEGG enrichment analysis of DEGs, Oxidative phosphorylation, Glycolysis/Gluconeogenesis, HIF-1 signaling pathway, Citrate cycle, Steroid hormone synthesis and Spliceosome were predicted to promote the male differentiation and development through providing ATP, promoting the synthesis of steroid hormone and providing correct gene products. SDHB, PDE1, HSDL1, Cp450, SRSF and SNRNP40 from these metabolic pathways were predicted to have dramatic effects in M. -

INTRODUCTION During a trip in Duc Lap, a district of Daklak Province about 300 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, we had an opportunity to buy some prawns of the genus Macrobrachium. These seem to belong to an as yet undescribed species, and this is described below. The new species, Macrobrachium thuylami, is characteristic in having the antepenultimate segment of the third maxilliped serrate at the distal half of the outer margin. Notes on habitat and economic importance are provided. The abbreviation tl. is used for total length, measured from the tip of the rostrum to the tip of the telson in the fully stretched specimen; cl. is used for carapace length excluding the rostrum. The material discussed here is deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Leiden, Netherlands. For identification of the prawn, papers of Holthuis (1950), Naiyanetr (1993), and Xuân (2003) were used. -

The Ohio Shrimp, Macrobrachium Ohione (Palaemonidae), in the Lower Ohio River of Illinois

Wetzel2 1Department of Zoology and 2Fisheries and Illinois Aquaculture Center Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois 62901 ABSTRACT Until about the 1930s, the Ohio shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione, was common in the Mississippi River between Chester and Cairo, and also occurred in the Ohio and lower Wabash rivers bordering southern Illinois, but since then, the species declined sharply in abundance. Two specimens were captured in May 2001 from the Ohio River at Joppa, Massac Co., Illinois, and represent the first M. ohione collected in the Ohio River in over 50 years. The Ohio shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione, was described from specimens collected in the Ohio River at Cannelton, Indiana (Smith, 1874) and occurs in the Mississippi River basin, Gulf Coast drainages, and also in some Atlantic coast drainages from Virginia to Georgia (Hedgpeth, 1949; Holthuis, 1952; Hobbs and Massmann, 1952). The Ohio shrimp formerly was abundant in the Mississippi River as far north as Chester, Illinois (and possibly St. Louis, Missouri) and in the Ohio River as far upstream as southeastern Ohio (Forbes, 1876; Hay, 1892; McCormick, 1934; Hedgpeth, 1949) but has declined in abundance drastically after the 1930s (Page, 1985). There has been only one record of the Ohio shrimp in the Wabash River bordering Illinois dated 1892, and the only record from the Ohio River of Illinois was from Shawneetown in southeastern Illinois (Hedg- peth, 1949; Page, 1985).
