This evening, you will meet your local guide in the hotel foyer for a brief walking tour of Kota Kinabalu, finishing with dinner at the Filipino Night Market for a local dinner, a bustling and colorful market located by the South China Sea (1 drinks included) Overnight in Kota Kinabalu DAY 2: KINABALU PARK, PORING HOT SPRINGS & SABAH TEA (B/L/-) Depart early at 07:30 in the morning for a scenic journey into Borneo’s rugged island interior. Travel along winding roads, passing paddy fields and local villages en route to the Poring Hot Springs. Take a walk around this beautiful compound which takes its name from the giant bamboo that surrounds it. See Japanese-style outdoor hot tubs which are filled from natural hot springs believed to possess therapeutic effects. Continue to nearby Kipungit Waterfall to admire this spectacular natural wonder. Alternatively, opt for a trek to the canopy walk, a suspension bridge that soars 40-metres above the forest floor. For thrill seekers, this swaying, man-made bridge is an ideal place to enjoy views of the rainforest, tree canopies and distant rolling hills. At midday break for lunch then continue to Sabah Tea Plantation, one of the last certified organic plantations in Malaysia. Tour this vast farmland, learning about the process of growing and harvesting tea then stop at the plantation’s restaurant to enjoy sweeping views across the valley. Resume the drive back to Kota Kinabalu, stopping at Mount Kinabalu National Park. Take a guided walk and learn from a local naturalist about the vast array of flora found in this lush park. Admire views of Mt Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s highest peak, in the distance before returning to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight in Kota Kinabalu DAY 3: KOTA KINBALU – SANDAKAN (B/-/-) After breakfast, day at leisure until your departure transfer to the airport for your onwards flight to Sandakan Suggested flight: AK6494 BKISDK 1320 1405 (Airfares NOT included) Arrive at Sandakan Airport, followed by stop by at Sandakan Memorial Park. Adjacent to the site of the original Sandakan Prisoner of War (POW) Camp, the park commemorates the sacrifice and suffering endured by both Australian and British soldiers who were held as prisoners by the Japanese between 1942 and 1945 before transfer to your resort and check-in Added Value – Sepilok Night Walk Orangutan Bedtime (Join-in) In the evening, an hour guided night walk to the Sepilok Forest Trails to experience walking the dark to spot animals or insects Overnight in Sepilok DAY 4: FD SANDAKAN WILDLIFE (B/L/-) After breakfast, at 0845hrs visit the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation center at Sepilok. At the center, guests can witness the orangutans being fed by the rangers. Please note the feeding times are very popular, so expect crowds at the platforms. Stroll the jungle-flanked wooden walkways to the central platform; orangutans can sometimes be seen from these platforms, so guests should have their cameras ready! Continue visit to the outstanding Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where guests have the opportunity to observe these stunning animals. There are currently 36 bears housed at the center, which have been rescued from poachers. Guests also have the opportunity to adopt a bear to ensure the programs- and the animals - survival (at guests’ own expense) After the tour, drive to Sandakan and drop off at English Tea House for your lunch before heading to Labuk Bay Sanctuary, one of the best place to encounter Borneo’s one and only Proboscis monkey. As we wait for the proboscis monkeys, other animals will also approach the feeding platform such as squirrels, silver leaf monkeys, and as well oriental pied hornbills. After feeding time, return to your hotel for rest of the day leisure. Feeding time: (Platform A) 0930 / 1430 (Platform B) 1130 / 1630 Overnight in Sepilok DAY 5: SEPILOK – KINABATANGAN RIVER (B/L/D) After breakfast, day at leisure until your pick-up time at 1045hrs and transfer to Sandakan Yacht Club Jetty for a boat transfer to the Kinabatangan River. This two-hour boat journey passes by local villages and lush rainforest. 1300 Arrive at the lodge, check in and enjoy lunch. The Local guide will conduct a briefing on the upcoming activities and advice on recommended gear. Time in the afternoon to relax. 1630 Late in the afternoon, hop on a riverboat for a cruise up the Kinabatangan River in search for wildlife - most notably, the proboscis monkeys which is endemic to Borneo. Other fauna is likely to be spotted in the Lower Kinabatangan Reserve includes elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and many birds. Return to the lodge for dinner before mid-evening take a stroll along the boardwalk on a lookout for nocturnal animals and interesting insects. Please Note: All boat cruises within the Kinabatangan are on a Join in Basis. Private basis can be requested at a supplement, however subject to availability. Overnight in Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort DAY 6: KINABATANGAN RIVER (B/L/D) 0600 Rise early in the morning along with the birds and other animals of the river for a cruise to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, a crescent shaped lake that formed when the river’s meander became so wide that it cut itself off. The stillness of the lake and relative protection provides a haven for animals and plants making for an ecosystem that’s completely distinct from that of the river. 0830 Continue to visit the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with local Orang Sungai, river people and observe daily activities in the fishing village. 1000 Return to the resort for breakfast and the rest of the day is at leisure before heading out in the late afternoon to watch the river activities of many primate species that become active during this time. The afternoon is a particularly advantageous time to spot wildlife and the light is perfect for photography. 1630 Set off for another afternoon cruise in search of the mangrove specials, river sceneries, village landscapes and more wildlife. In good weather, there is a possibility to see firefly colonies which are found at certain parts of the river. Cruise back to KWR for dinner at the common area. 2030 After dinner, take a night river safari on a look out for target species. Overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort DAY 7: KINABATANGAN RIVER – SANDAKAN – DEPARTURE (B/-/-) 0700 After breakfast a chance to explore the nature board walk around the lodge area. 1000 Check-out from hotel and return to Sandakan by boat. 1130 Arrival at Sandakan Jetty for onward journey.     Standard Itinerary Day 1: KOTA KINABALU –APIN-APIN, KENINGAU- PAGANDADAN RANGERS (Dinner) Meet your driver in the designated hotel and then will transfer to Kapayan Recreation Resources(KRR) where all climbers will gather before proceed to the starting point in Apin- Apin, Keningau. Upon arrival to Apin-Apin Keningau, continue to register and double check the climbing permit and attend to a short safety briefing before start heading to the starting point base camp lead by the mountain guide. Estimated time taken shall be around 3- 4 hours depends on your pace. Along the way, stop by at the captivating Trusmadi Waterfall. Dinner will be served at the camp site and later overnight stay at the camp. After dinner, join in with a short night walk in search of nocturnal animal before proceed to rest in the tent provided. (Timing and places all depend on your schedule of arrival) Day 2: CAMPSITE – WATERFALL VISIT (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Wake up around 06:00 hrs to prepare for a trek to the Kalawot Waterfall. The trek shall takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to arrive. Upon arrival, relax and enjoy the water. Later on, trek back to the base camp and proceed for lunch upon arrival to the camp site. Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

Executive Summary WWF-Malaysia initiated the water quality monitoring using physic-chemical and biological parameters along the lower Sugut River and its tributaries to monitor the status of water quality in the area, especially in areas surrounded by oil palm plantations. A total of 12 sampling stations were selected at four tributaries of Sugut River based on agreement with WWF staff members and Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) officer. The four tributaries were Sabang river (next to oil palm mill), Sugut river (next to oil palm plantation), Wansayan river (next to secondary forest) and Kepilatan river (next to Nipah forest). Fieldwork started in August 2015 and ended in November 2015, with a total of four samplings. The results showed that the Water Quality Index (WQI) classified Sg. Sabang as very polluted, while Sg. Sugut, Sg. Wansayan and Sg. Kepilatan were slightly polluted. In accordance to INWQS, parameters TSS, DO and BOD for all tributaries were classified in Class III and IV.

    Borneo Trip Report Kinabatangan, Gomantang, Sepilok, Klias & Ba’Kelalan 9-17 March 2020 John Rogers, Neil Broekhuizen Guided by: BirdTour Asia, Wilbur Goh (Sabah) and Yeo Siew Teck (Sarawak) Overview A very successful 8 day trip covering the Kinabatangan River (as well as Gomantang Cave and Sepilok) in north-east Sabah, an afternoon and evening at the Klias Swamp Forest reserve in south-west Sabah and three days at Ba’Kelalan in north-east Sarawak, We began with 3 full days based at the Myne Resort on the Kinabatangan river. The highlight was undoubtedly spectacular views of a male Bornean Ground Cuckoo. Other highlights at Kinabatangan included great night birding that yielded Large Frogmouth, Reddish Scops Owl and Oriental Bay Owl and other good diurnal birds included the much-desired Storm’s Stork, White-crowned and Wrinkled Hornbills and Sabah (Chestnut-necklaced) Partridge. After a brief visit to the Gomantang Caves we had one night at Sepilok and then a productive morning’s birding with Bornean Bristlehead and the scarce Olive-backed Woodpecker the main highlights. We then flew to Kota Kinabulu and drove the Klias swamp forest reserve where we were successful in seeing the main target; Hook-billed Bulbul. That afternoon and evening we drove into Sarawak and after one night in the regional town of Lawas caught a small flight to Ba’Kelalan. Our three days of birding was spectacular with good views of all 7 of the ‘Sarawak specials’: we were very excited to finally see Hose’s Broadbill after many hours of searching with Dulit and Bornean Frogmouths, Blue-banded and Bornean Banded Pittas, Whitehead’s Spiderhunter and Mountain Serpent Eagle rounding out the target list.

Sabah is well known for its water village settlements that are built on wooden pillars and which can be found along Sabah coastal water. However, a lot of problems have occurred at the Sabah water villages. Thus, the aim of this study is to measure the solid waste generation and composition in 150 households at select water villages in Sabah, Malaysia. The study was conducted at three major towns in Sabah, namely Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau water village, Kampung Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu water village and Kampung Sim-sim, Sandakan water village. Based on the results, the total waste generation is 1519.30 kg and the average solid waste generation rate per household is 0.29 kg/person/day. The main component of solid waste is food waste, which comprises 37% of the total waste generated, followed by plastic waste at 31%, paper waste 14.7%, glass 7.2%, and metal 6.3%. The remainder (3.8%) includes bulky waste, furniture, wood, etc. Although the solid waste generation rate is comparatively low, it will create a negative impact on the environment and pub- lic health if proper management of solid waste is not practiced.

The harbour is located on the east of the promontory, sheltered from prevailing winds with sufficient water depth for ship berthing. Reclamation works for the proposed naval base involved reclaiming useful land areas of about 122 acres with soil treatment for the installation of on-shore facilities and construction of quay structure. The quay comprises of 800 metres berth length and a provision for future extension of 100 metres of berthing space. The construction of the quay at its location will provide for a minimum water depth of 10 metres to cater for the specified range of Navy vessels. The overall layout of the quay at the operation harbour is based on the principle of pier systems, which will offer wide aprons and ample space to allow for easy loading and unloading of vessels. The 3 sided berth can cater for large and small vessels. Continuous service trenches of 1.7 metres wide with removable covers are provided along the front face of the quay. Transverse trenches are provided at suitable locations to feed the front trench. The Detail Works include :- Design of reclamation work, soil treatment, dredging and shore protection work for the reclaimed land for the whole base.

Some instruments are local inventions, while others have been diffused into indigenous cultures through outside contacts. During the process of diffusion, instruments may undergo structural transformations due to the use of local materials. Terms used for the parts of the diffused instrument and also the music played may also change over time in accordance with local aesthetics and contexts. The focus of this article is the diffusion and transformation of the nibung palmwood or bamboo keyed gabbang xylophone of the Sama’ Bajau and Suluk communities along the east coast of Sabah, the east Malaysian state on northern Borneo, into the wooden gabang of the indigenous Makiang people of the Upper Kinabatangan River. The gabbang originated from Bajau and Suluk (Taosug) cultures in the southern Philippines. The discussion here compares and contrasts the structure, nomenclature and performance technique of the Makiang gabang with the gabbang to identify the physical transformation that the instrument has undergone. It also examines the gabang repertoire and discusses a musical example to show how this transformed xylophone has been utlised to produce music according to Makiang contexts and practices. This illustrates how ideas and objects can cross cultural borders to eventually develop into traditions in the receiving culture.
