Re: Creation of a Department of Urology
Dear Dr. Strup,
The UK College of Medicine Faculty Council thanks you for bringing the issue of the creation of a
Department of Urology to us and for your participation in yesterday’s meeting. We have considered
the merits of the proposal and have voted unanimously to endorse the formation of a Department of
Urology within the College of Medicine. Approval was contingent on reorganizing the application to
conform to University Senate standards, to facilitate its flow at the University level.
Thank you for the opportunity to be involved in the development of this important aspect of
our educational mission.
Sincerely,
John D’Orazio, M.D.,Ph.D. College of Medicine Faculty Council Chair, 2012-13

Proposal for the Creation of the Department of Urology
Stephen E. Strup, M.D.
October2012 Historical Background of the Division of Urology
The Foundation of the Division of Urology was laid by Dr. Edward H. Ray. Dr. Ray was synonymous with Urology in Lexington, Kentucky, having built a large practice in town. He was one of the leaders in the movement to establish the University of Kentucky, School of Medicine which opened its doors in 1960. Dr. Ray also was the director of a Urology Residency program at St. Joseph’s Hospital. With the opening of the Medical School, Dr. Ray was named the Chief of the Division of Urology, a position he held until 1969. From 1969 through 1972, there were a series of Chiefs that held, or were to hold the title briefly. Dr. Kenneth Walton, Dr. John Simmons, and then Dr. Arthur Hellebusch. Dr. J. William McRoberts was named the Chief of Urology in 1972 and began the work of building a Urology Division and residency. From his arrival in 1972, Dr. McRoberts would serve as the Division Chief in Urology for 25 years. While his speciality was in Pediatric Urology, he practiced the entire range of Urology. He trained roughly 50 residents who went on to practice in both academic and private practice. Dr. McRoberts’ protégés included 4 future Urology Chairs (Dr. Anthony Casale, Dr. James Mohler, Dr. Leonard Gomella, and Dr. Inderbir Gill). Dr. McRoberts also helped lay the academic foundation of several faculty members who initiated their careers at the University of Kentucky. The Division of Urology remained a small division, however, and especially through the mid 1990’s, faculty turnover was fairly brisk. The faculty complement generally ranged from 3 5 members and also had the help of the community Urology practice for case volume.
In 1997, Dr. Randall Rowland assumed the leadership of the Division. Dr. Rowland arrived from the Indiana University where he had developed a successful career in Urologic Oncology. Dr. Rowland served as Division Chief for 10 years before assuming the position as President and CEO of the Markey Cancer Foundation in 2007. Dr. Stephen Strup then assumed the position of Chief, Division of Urology, in the Department of Surgery
