AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATIONOF Kentaro Hosaka for the degree of Doctor ofPhilosophy in Botany and Plant Pathology presented on October 26, 2005. Title: Systematics, Phylogeny, andBiogeography of the Hysterangiales and Related Taxa (Phallomycetidae, Homobasidiomycetes). Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Monophyly of the gomphoid-phalloid dadewas confirmed based on multigene phylogenetic analyses. Four major subclades(Hysterangiales, Geastrales, Gomphales and Phallales) were also demonstratedto be monophyletic. The interrelationships among the subclades were, however, not resolved, andalternative topologies could not be rejected statistically. Nonetheless,most analyses showed that the Hysterangiales and Phallales do not forma monophyletic group, which is in contrast to traditional taxonomy. The higher-level phylogeny of thegomphoid-phalloid fungi tends to suggest that the Gomphales form a sister group with either the Hysterangialesor Phallales. Unweighted parsimonycharacter state reconstruction favorsthe independent gain of the ballistosporic mechanism in the Gomphales, but the alternativescenario of multiple losses of ballistospoiy could not be rejected statistically underlikelihood- based reconstructions. This latterhypothesis is consistent with thewidely accepted hypothesis that the loss of ballistosporyis irreversible. The transformationof fruiting body forms from nongastroid to gastroidwas apparent in the lineage leading to Gautieria (Gomphales), but thetree topology and character statereconstructions supported that truffle-like -

As a result of field and laboratory studies, Colus hirudinosus Cavalier & Séchier belonging to the family Phallaceae Corda was reported as a new record at genus level for Turkish clathroid fungi. Short description of the newly reported species was given together with its photographs related to macro and micromorphologies and discussed briefly. Aquí se incluyen los mohos, mildius, levaduras, setas, bejines y otros muchos no visibles a simple vista. Algunos de estos hongos han protagoni- zado en el pasado, hechos que transciende lo humanamente comprensible, generalmente relacionados con la religión, siendo considerados como símbolos de un poder sobrenatural. En su aspecto más lúdico, los hongos siempre han gozado de una gran popularidad, debido a las propiedades gastronómicas de muchas setas. Los hongos constituyen un grupo de extraordinaria impor- tancia en el contexto de la biosfera, ya que junto a otros organismos heterótrofos, son los principales biodegradadores de los restos orgánicos. Además, algunos constituyen la base de importantes procesos industriales, como las levaduras, utilizadas en la elaboración del pan, el vino o la cerveza, jugando por tanto un papel muy relevante en la nutrición de la humanidad. Otros se utilizan industrialmente en la fabricación de ácido cítrico, la base de la gran industria de bebidas no alcohólicas; en la fabricación de cierto tipo de quesos; en la producción de un gran número de antibióticos, especialmente la penicilina, o antifúngicos como la griseofulvina, utilizada en tratamientos de dermatomicosis; en la fabricación de algunas vitaminas, como la riboflavina y de varios medicamentos importantes como la ergotamina, ciclosporina, etc. -

En su interior se encuentra el carpóforo, sin terminar de desarrollar, cubierto por una gruesa capa gelatinosa ligeramente traslúcida. Al abrirse por la parte superior aparece un carpóforo de 3-6 cm de alto, formado por 6-8 brazos verticales, que se bifurcan varias veces en el ápice, uniéndose entre ellos formando una especie de malla poligonal, con 5-7 lados por cada celda. Estos brazos son esponjosos, cavernosos, arrugados, con pliegues transversales que le dan aspecto de fruncido y surcos longitudinales, de color rosa claro en la parte inferior hasta rojo vivo en la superior. La gleba se encuentra al principio dentro de esta estructura poligonal, pero al desarrollarse completamente el carpóforo se limita a la parte superior, entre las celdas, es de color verde oliva a verde oscuro, mucilaginosa y con olor repugnante a heces, que atrae fuertemente a las moscas. -

Microbial Biosystems 3(1), 74-83. Abstract Fungi are different from animals and plants. Since at least the 1970s, scientists have agreed that fungi belong in their own separate biological kingdom which is likely to contain far more species than the plant kingdom. Ecologically and economically, the Fungi Kingdom is of an immense value and is necessary for sustainable life on planet earth. There are six kingdom classifications of life - with Fungi classified as a kingdom of their own. Taxa of Kingdom Fungi are diverse, and as the second largest group of organisms - after insects, are distributed among numerous groups of living organisms. Technological advances in molecular research have enabled mycologists to discover and identify fungal taxa. It is estimated that as many as 1.5 million fungal species exist. In Malta the public perception, biodiversity and conservation of fungi is very low with awareness being close to non-existent. A lot of education regarding the subject is urgently needed. Malta Mycological Association (MMA) was founded only recently (2014) in an effort to promote awareness, interest and conservation regarding the importance of fungi, their function in the ecological system along with the importance and benefits of their existence in our environment. This work has to be considered as an important contribution to the nature conservation program in Malta.
