Our framework and arguments build from our diverse backgrounds in political science, economics, law, and corporate governance, and our knowledge in countries and regions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Dominic Byatt, our commissioning editor at Oxford University Press, advised us to write a book that would read like a monograph, with a central argument that brought our different case studies into a coherent whole. We came together as a project team in March 2016 to generate initial hypotheses, and again in June 2017 to peer-review our findings and develop a common analytical framework.     AFRICA RISK CONSULTING Ghana Monthly Briefing December 2020 Ghana Summary 17 December 2020 President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo (2017-present) secures a second four-year term in a tight presidential election but without a majority in parliament and his opponent, former President John Mahama (2012-2017), refusing to concede defeat. Economists are divided in opinion on how the current uncertain political environment will impact economic activity and local and foreign investment in the country. The election was largely peaceful but marred by patches of violence during counting and collation of results, with six recorded election-related deaths. Akufo Addo wins re-election, opposition claims fraud Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) announced on 9 December that President Nana Akufo-Addo (2017-present) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had secured 51.59% of the valid votes cast in presidential polls held on 7 December, beating his opponent and predecessor, former President John Mahama (2012-2017) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who obtained 47.366%.1 Mahama has rejected the election results, describing them as “fraudulent”, and has vowed to take up a legal battle. ARC’s sources in Ghana say there is a tense atmosphere in the country as the nation awaits the next move by the opposition NDC – although the election was largely peaceful. The two major parties failed to gain an absolute majority in the country’s 275-seat parliament, with the NDC wiping out of the NPP’s 63-seat majority. The ECC announced on 17 December that the NDC won the remaining seat to be counted in the legislative elections, Sene West, matching the ruling party’s tally and creating a hung parliament.

A host of 'Old Boys' thronged the grounds of the Christ Church Anglican Church at the University of Ghana, Legon on Saturday 24th April 2019 for the Burial Service and more importantly to pay their last respects to the man who had done so much for Mfantsipim and MOBA. The recent and ongoing crises within neoliberal-capitalism (2007-present) has been raised to visibility issues in the nexus of national apex banking (autonomy, interests, structure, operation, form, among others) as means of improving macro-economic stability and sustaining national socio- economic growth and development. Irrespective of prolonged mismanagement of the national economy and the presentation of conspicuous macro-economic instability, among other socio- economic challenges, there is a gap in information and knowledge regarding the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)‟s role in responding to these challenges. Here, we review critical literature on adverse consequences of global apex banking autonomy on sustainable development generally –including impacts on vulnerable populations excluded by the elite from sustainable development processes and platforms. Then we examine recent public discourses concerning Nigeria‟s apex bank‟s autonomy by various stakeholders including: recent attempts by Nigeria‟s federal legislators to strip the CBN of its autonomy; responses by the ruling and major political parties and the CBN‟s leadership, among others. Afterwards we examine the track-records of the CBN macro-economic management and of Nigeria‟s federal legislature in contributing towards Nigeria‟s socio-economic development in Nigeria‟s Fourth Republic (1999-2012/present).
