The arts and the country are built on the foundation of a vibrant, diverse group of individuals and The Plural of She offers a platform to celebrate them. Every day breeds new stories, perspectives, and avenues for representation that demand to be seen and heard. These performances invite the audience to listen, be entertained, and learn about the worlds that exist in close proximity to our own. Each of these artists are master storytellers with a wealth of knowledge and experience that immerse the audiences profoundly. Each production strides the line between creatively-crafted narrative and a personal reality that genuinely connect the audience to their story. Talk Is Free Theatre is committed to offering opportunities for individuals with a story to tell to be heard and seen. The company will continue to evolve with the times and this brand-new festival is a another step towards representation for vital voices. Arkady Spivak Artistic Producer WWW.TIFT.CA | 705-792-1949 Curator's Greeting Welcome to this offering of The Plural of She, a mini-festival of solo plays by female-identifying artists! This diverse grouping of original creations includes two world premieres, a play that has toured internationally, and work that reflect our world through the woman’s and non-binary lens. The title of this festival is a humourous dig at the English language, which does not provide a plural for “she”, offering only “they”, which is only now offered as the pronoun for many individuals on the gender spectrum. This re-visiting of the English language keeps us artists free to create “out of the box” so to speak. I am honoured to be in the company of this exciting group of artists, and wish to thank our generous Barrie hosts who are sharing their beautiful outdoor spaces for some of the first theatre events in this country since the Covid 19 lockdowns. Maja Ardal Curator, The Plural of She WWW.TIFT.CA | 705-792-1949 September 23 & 24, 2020 at 6pm 16 Lougheed Road, Barrie HAVING HOPE: A HAND DRUM SONG CYCLE Created and Performed by Nicole Joy-Fraser Through her gifts of song and hand drum, 60’s Scoop witness Nicole Joy-Fraser shares the reclamation of her Indigenous identity, her journey of healing, and her personal decolonization through the performing arts. Birthed from an invitation by her colleague and mentor Maja Ardal, Nicole thought if she replaced the piano and bar scene of a Cabaret-style concert with the hand drum and a back yard, then it could be an opportunity for a small audience to learn and hear her story. Ultimately the perspective of a Professional Indigenous Artist and Cultural Arts worker who has been establishing herself over the last 20 years with the incredible support of her family, her community, and her ancestral lineage. She is thrilled and honoured to be given this space and to open The Plural of She. This is the official premiere and first time that Nicole is devising solo-work. Kininâskomitin. Small things like gift certificates to the movies. Big things like the people we love suddenly being gone. As kids, our fear of things vanishing would keep us up at night. We’d get real quiet imagining the people we loved suddenly going away. In these moments, I used to tell my brother stories: kooky stories, embarrassing stories; stories about falling in love. These little tales would calm us - and often make us laugh. They became something we hung onto no matter what. In Case We Disappear is a series of poems, songs, and comedic anecdotes that “quickly tack between the humour in everyday minutia, and grand, heartfelt observations about big life questions.” (NOW Magazine). It’s just me and a microphone, and I have toured the show to sold-out houses through North America and the UK where it was Critics Pick in 9 publications, and also named one of the best free shows at the Edinburgh Fringe (BFTBOScotland). Theatre Critic Jordan Bimm describes the show as "an emotional and spellbinding combination of storytelling, stand-up comedy, poetry and song – all at the same time". I talk about accidentally booty-calling an ex, and describe the time I looked for lost soldiers after a war. In this “Backyard Edition” we’ll playfully conjure the memories we hang onto, when everything else is gone. VANESSA SMYTHE TIFT: For Both Resting and Breeding, Offline .
