    Shankar Jaikishan – Emperors of Music By Ashwini Kumar Rath Shankar Jaikishan music, synonym of Indian Film music, has far reaching impact in India and outside. The duo moulded music and musical mood of masses since 1949, and are still considered to be the best music composers from India. The duo also contributed outside movie industry with their much celebrated album Raga in Jazz Style, and background music for documentary Everest expedition among many others. If we look at the popular impact by any personalities in the field of music during the post-independence period in India, the obvious choice is Shankar Jaikishan. Shankar, the more versatile of the two, was a prolific musician with mastery over dozens of instruments, Indian classical music and dance forms. He was primarily responsible for building Shankar Jaikishan team with dedicated lyricists, music assistants, and jumbo-sized 60-pieces orchestra, and was the lead composer. On the other hand, Jaikishan was incredibly creative and legendary composer himself. He was genius of background music and romantic tunes though he too could compose songs in other genres. While Shankar's musical jhankar propels divine dwellers to zoom in unison with ecstasy, romantic effervescence of Jaikishan music brings divine feelings on to earth. During initial years, all decisions about musical engagements were made by Shankar; but both started taking up assignments separately in the late sixties. They had sharp contrasts in personalities and physical appearances. Shankar was gym-savvy, non- drinker, and was a strict disciplinarian.     EXPLOITATION, VICTIMHOOD, AND GENDERED PERFORMANCE IN RITUPARNO GHOSH’S BARIWALI Rohit K. Dasgupta and Tanmayee Banerjee Rituparno Ghosh (1961—2013) was a filmmaker, lyricist, and writer who first emerged on the cultural scene in Bengal as a copywriter at Response, a Kolkata-based advertising firm in the eighties. He made a mark for himself in the world of commercials, winning several awards for his company be- fore directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (India’s national public television). He moved into narrative film- making with the critically acclaimed Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992) and the National Award–winning Unishe April (19th April, 1995). He is credited with changing the experi- ence of cinema for the middle-class Bengali bhadrolok and 1 thus opening a new chapter in the history of Indian cinema. From the age of four, Shashi Kapoor acted in plays directed and produced by his father Prithviraj Kapoor while travelling with Prithvi Theaters. He started acting in films as a child artiste in the late 1940s appearing in commercial films including Sangram (1950) and Dana Pani (1953) under the name of Shashiraj as there was another actor by the same name who used to act in mythogical films as a child artiste. His best known performances as a child artiste were in Aag (1948) and Awaara (1951) where he played the younger version of the characters played by his brother Raj Kapoor and in Sangram (1950) where he played younger version of Ashok Kumar.

After directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (National television), he graduated into filmmaking with Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992), which was critically acclaimed but failed to get a commercial release. For his second film, Ghosh collaborated with Aparna Sen and Renu Roy to form Spandan Films which produced Unishey April (19th April, 1995). The film won the National Award for the Best Film and when it hit the screens in the summer of 1995 it remarkably changed the experience of cinema for the middleclass Bengali bhadrolok.1 Ghosh arrived at a time when Bengali cinema was going through a particularly difficult phase. Satyajit Ray had passed away in 1992, leaving behind him a vacuum which seemed difficult to fill. Although Goutam Ghose, Aparna Sen and Buddhadeb Dasgupta tried to carry forward the legacy of ‘intellectual’ cinema represented by Ray and Mrinal Sen, they made films far in-between having little bearing on the commercial market. Tollygunge, where the main studios are located, had been taken over by filmmakers who were mostly remaking Tamil or Hindi films. They worked within severe budget constraints and the financial and intellectual impoverishment was glaringly visible on screen.
