http//:daathvoyagejournal.com Editor: Saikat Banerjee Department of English Dr. K.N. Modi University, Newai, Rajasthan, India. : An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in English ISSN 2455-7544 www.daathvoyagejournal.com Vol.1, No.3, September, 2016 Exploring the Illusive Borderlines: Construction of Identity in the Indian Subcontinent Raj Raj Mukhopadhyay Student, M.A. (II) Department of English VisvaBharati University Email: [email protected] Abstract: The creation of borderlines demarcating the geographical boundary of the state has always problematized the discourse of nation incorporating the issues and debates of race, class, religion and historical events. It is also significant how it presents the ongoing process of the construction of personal ‘identity’ and the cultural determination of one’s selfhood. In the Indian subcontinent, the case is more interesting and complex as nation building takes place in heterogeneous, even fragmented lingual and cultural societies all over our country. The idea of ‘nation’ in the Subcontinent is much complicated, where the question of ethnicity and other forms of religious and political identities play a key role. My paper entitled “Exploring the Illusive Borderlines: Construction of Identity in the Indian Subcontinent” is a very modest attempt to get a glimpse into how the formation of borderlines by the partition of India delineates the construction of racial, religious and cultural ‘identity’ of an individual. This paper aims at studying few short stories like Intizar Husain’s “An Unwritten Epic”, SaadatHasanManto’s “Toba Tek Singh” and films like Vol.1, Issue 3, 2016 Page 67 : An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in English ISSN 2455-7544 www.daathvoyagejournal.com Vol.1, No.3, September, 2016 SrijitMukherji’s “Rajkahini”, Deepa Mehta’s “Earth”, exploring the inherent complexities that arise while defining one’s identity, which is determined by one’s socio-cultural and religious position. -

Exploitation, Victimhood, and Gendered Performance in Rituparno Ghosh’S Bariwali
EXPLOITATION, VICTIMHOOD, AND GENDERED PERFORMANCE IN RITUPARNO GHOSH’S BARIWALI Rohit K. Dasgupta and Tanmayee Banerjee Rituparno Ghosh (1961—2013) was a filmmaker, lyricist, and writer who first emerged on the cultural scene in Bengal as a copywriter at Response, a Kolkata-based advertising firm in the eighties. He made a mark for himself in the world of commercials, winning several awards for his company be- fore directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (India’s national public television). He moved into narrative film- making with the critically acclaimed Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992) and the National Award–winning Unishe April (19th April, 1995). He is credited with changing the experi- ence of cinema for the middle-class Bengali bhadrolok and 1 thus opening a new chapter in the history of Indian cinema. Visual Grandeur, Imagined Glory: Identity Politics and Hindu Nationalism in Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat Abstract This paper examines the tropes through which the Hindi (Bollywood) historical films Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018) create idealised pasts on screen that speak to Hindu nationalist politics of present-day India. Bajirao Mastani is based on a popular tale of love, between Bajirao I (1700-1740), a powerful Brahmin general, and Mastani, daughter of a Hindu king and his Iranian mistress. The er lationship was socially disapproved because of Mastani`s mixed parentage. The film distorts India`s pluralistic heritage by idealising Bajirao as an embodiment of Hindu nationalism and portraying Islam as inimical to Hinduism. Padmaavat is a film about a legendary (Hindu) Rajput queen coveted by the Muslim emperor Alauddin Khilji (ruled from 1296-1316). -

Nominations for the 3Rd Edition of 'Cinemar Samabartan' Announced
Press Release rd Nominations For The 3 Edition Of ‘Cinemar Samabartan’ Announced Award Ceremony To Be Held On 13th January At Basushree Cinema, Kolkata Kolkata, 7th January 2019: West Bengal Film Journalists’ Association (WBFJA) today announced the nominations of the 3rd edition of the West Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award 2018 entitled ‘Cinemar Samabartan’. Mr. Prosenjit Chatterjee, Mr. Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Mr Haranath Chakraborty, Mr. Gautam Jain of Real Reel and Mr. Nirmal Dhar, Secretary, WBFJA were present to announce the nominations and the other details of the award ceremony. The award ceremony will be held on 13th January, 2019 from 9.30 am onwards at Basushree Cinema, Kolkata. “This is the only simple yet authentic award function of Bangla cinema leaving behind the pomp and grandeur of several similar ceremonies that will follow during the year. Ours is the only film award of the country that is judged exclusively by film journalists and is also the first Industry to Industry award ceremony of the year. This year the theme of the award ceremony is „Content is the king vs Audience is the king‟. We are trying to explore a new method that celebrates recent progressive thinking and vision which is well ahead of time and thus taking the thread from „Tin Yaari Katha‟- a film much ahead of its‟ times. Three talented actor artists will host the show with a roller coaster ride of last year releases”, said Mr Nirmal Dhar, Secretary, West Bengal Film Journalists’ Association (WBFJA) As always there will be seventeen award categories in the popular segment, eight award categories in the Technical Award segment, and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
