January 2017 - www.bowlingworld.com 19 $1.3 Million Ticket Sold in Solano County Claimed!

On Saturday, September 10 one Powerball® ticket sold in California matched five of the six winning numbers to win $1,301,956 (before federal taxes). Ron Hilton wasted no time staking his claim to that prize. Hilton walked into the California Lottery’s Sacra- mento District Office the following Monday morning holding the win- ning Powerball ticket. Hilton told us he was still in bed Sunday morning (Sept. 10) when he decided to grab his phone and check the winning Powerball numbers. “I had the screen up on my phone that showed the winning amount. I think I looked at it at least 30-40 times. Then I called my friend Mike,” Hilton said. “I had to jump out of the shower and drive an hour to verify it,” Mike said laughing. The two friends were all laughs as they relived that day. The only downside according to Hilton was that he JUST missed winning the whopping $205 million jackpot. Hilton’s ticket matched the numbers 3-17-49-55-68; but the winning redPowerball number was 8 and Hilton had the number 6. So close! Hilton told us that before this, he had never won anything big playing the lottery – but he had won enough little prizes to keep him interested. Now that he hit it big, Hilton said he’s going to keep playing and “ride that wave!” Hil- ton purchased the winning ticket at Join Us - Call for openings Vaca Valley Travel Center, which is located at 151 Crocker Drive in Vaca- ville (Solano County).

Bowling Industry Taps Link Strategy Group As Strategic Partnership Agency

By Mike Alday

ARLINGTON, Texas – Bowling’s major entities – the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) and Strike Ten Entertainment (STE) – have contracted with Link Strategy Group to develop sponsorship partners for the industry. Combined, the USBC, BPAA and STE provide access to the more than 67 million con- sumers who bowl each year and more than 5,000 bowling centers across the U.S. Link Strategy Group will serve as the strategic partnership agency to introduce the bowling plat- form to potential non-endemic corporations interested in access to the sport of bowling. “After an in-depth search for a partner in this area, the consensus was that Link Strategy Group was a great fit for bowling,” said John Harbuck, President of Strike Ten Entertain- ment, the marketing arm of the bowling industry. “They immediately grasped the significant power that our organizations collectively offer and have the contacts to get bowling front- and-center with potential sponsors. “Bowling is the number one participatory sport in the U.S. and, to date, is really untapped when it comes to non-endemic partnerships,” he added. In addition to providing companies with access to consumers through bowling centers, Link Strategy Group will be able to offer exclusive naming rights for the recently relaunched Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour and tour events. Current PWBA sponsors include Pepsi, Nationwide, Smithfield and Go Bowling. Link Strategy Group will also be able to provide partners with unparalleled access to the USBC membership, which is larger than the combined memberships of similar organiza- tions in golf and tennis. Opportunities also exist around the USBC’s national events, which draw participation from thousands of bowlers around the country. These include the Open Championships, Women’s Championships, USBC Masters, USBC Queens, U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, Junior Gold Championships, Team USA and others. Congratulations Dave Kirtley “Bowling is the original social network. It’s a game that’s been enjoyed by people of all 257-267-279 = 800 ages and skill levels for literally centuries,” said Jeff Benton, CEO of Link Strategy Group. Bowled at Double Decker “We are excited that for the first time a company can own the sport of bowling through the collective assets of the major bowling organizations. We can deliver this platform, truly unique in the world of sports, to companies who want to reach a very loyal, expansive CONGRATULATIONS TO CRAIG SCHOEPPNER! Rolling his audience. January 2017 - www.bowlingworld.com 25 ASK BOB by Bob Korth

Q. I have been watching the PBA on Sunday morning and I am amazed at how easy the pro's make bowling look. I know they bowl 40 or 50 games a week and yet when they get on the show they look like it's their first game of the week. When I go practice and bowl 6 or 7 games I am worn out. How do they manage to bowl all of those games week after week?

A. Professional bowlers of today are in great physical condition. They are as much an athlete as any person in any other sport. They have an everyday training schedule just as successful players in other sports. They work very hard especially on the legs. Bowlers must have a very good foundation in or- der to be at the top of their game. The legs more than anything else gives bowlers balance, ball speed, and helps with their overall accuracy. So get out there and work on your leg strength to improve your game.

Q. When you leave a split or get a washout should you always try to make the spare, or should you go for the count?

A. There are several variables that come into the decision to go for the spare or not. It also depends on how difficult a split you have left. If you have a baby split the 3-10 or 2-7 for instance I would always go for it. If it is a 4-7-10 or a 6- 7-10 something like that then it depends on the situation. Early in the game I would suggest always going for the count. If it is the end of a game and you need it to win then of course you go for it. If the game is won and it makes no difference if you count or not then it is up to you. Also another part of the equation is if you are in a frame after a strike. This make a big difference in that a big miss causes you a double loss of count. On a strike if you leave 6 pins and get two of them you have an 8 count and an 8 count for 12 Brunswick Lanes with Quibica Scoring the open. But if you miss them all you get 6 and 6. (Still can’t find us, call us, we’ll fax you a map) Manager This is not a dumb question some people just don't know. They are referring to how many boards they are going to move with the feet and how many boards they are going to move their target on the lane. Said that way the meaning is 2 boards inside further with feet and one board on the lane. In order to do this you need to have a way of lining up with your feet most right-handed bowlers

use the inside edge of the sole of the left foot as a marker. Line that up on a

board of the approach. The 2 board move is easy by using that method. Now it doesn't have to be done that way you could use the center of your left foot or the right side so long as you always use the same place on your foot as a marker.
