And they probably don’t even realize it. The West Coast Senior Tour, a club of top senior bowlers primarily from California and Nevada, is returning to the Southland this weekend for a string of four tournaments. League bowlers are eligible for WCST events, provided they’re at least 60 years old. But they rarely take advantage of the opportunity. No doubt, it can be costly – the entry fee can run almost $200. But it’s possible the tournament can be one of those take-your-breath-away events that can be treasured for a long time. I know firsthand about the thrill of bowling with – and against – players who put together six strikes as easily as tying one’s shoes. About two-and-a-half years ago, I com- peted in a WCST event in Mission Hills and I couldn’t have been more excited. I felt as if I was joining the Dodgers and sharing the diamond with players like third baseman Ron Cey, shortstop Bill Russell, second baseman Davey Lopes and first base- man Steve Garvey (I must have been playing short-center, like on a softball team.) And there I was – at Mission Hills Bowl – sporting my lofty 152 average. Not too far away from me was United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Robin Romeo, who was shooting rockets down the lanes with impeccable form. I was part of a three-man group that bowled over two lanes. Our team included even- tual champion John Sowell, a left-hander who when he’s in a groove is as good as any pro bowler alive. And this was a day when Sowell was at his best. The left-hander from Vista, Calif., not only hooked virtually every shot into the pocket, but he took time to converse with me, provide pointers and encourage me. All the while, he’s playing for a $725 first-place prize – which he won in a thrilling duel in the finals with favorite Kevin Gannon. When Sowell won, I was probably more excited than he was because I had bowled alongside a top bowler who happened to be the same age and eventually became a good friend.

Click here to view this message in a browser window. In this era of high-tech equipment, most people have video capability on their cell phone or tablet, or access to a digital camera to shoot video. Video can be a very useful tool during practice since it allows you to see your game, not just feel it. It might feel like your armswing is doing one thing, or your footwork is going a certain way, but that might not necessarily be the case. Most times when someone sees themselves throwing a ball on video for the first time, they can’t believe what they see. Our muscle memory and feel can be quite different from what is actually going on during our approach and delivery. There are two main camera angles you will need to use to gather the most information. The first is directly behind you, looking down the lane. This will show you the direction of your armswing, as well as the direction you walk going to the line. The other angle you’ll want is a side view of your approach, all the way to your release. This will help show your timing, the size of your steps, and how well you are staying down on the shot. By just recording a few shots from each angle, you can gain a ton of information about your game. Video can quickly show what you need to work on to improve your game. Also, you can upload video clips to your computer and archive them so you can easily compare your progress, side by side, as you work on different aspects of your game.
