The term 'native title' became a legally recognised concept, at Australian common law, with the introduction of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA 1993 (Cth)). Since its introduction, the Act has undergone certain crucial amendments, which Aboriginal leaders have described as detrimental to the success of native title claims in many parts of Australia. This thesis explores the historical, legal, political and social context of native title claims in New South Wales, through the experiences of the Aboriginal people of Dubbo. Particular emphasis is placed on the political and legal processes which constructed the current social and historical context of the lives of Aboriginal people in Dubbo. The discussion focuses on the impact of political and ideological changes on Aboriginal affairs in Australian in the last few decades, and specifically upon the social and political organisation of the Aboriginal community of Dubbo. It explores the avenues that are available for Aboriginal people (New South Wales) for claiming native title in today's social, legal and political climate. Furthermore, it focuses on the routes that the Aboriginal people of Dubbo have chosen to take in their attempts to gain rights to, and authority over, local Aboriginal heritage. Hawkins and my mother Anna Gudjonsdottir. 1 Chapter One Introduction Australia is the present home and refuge of creatures, often crude and quaint, that elsewhere have passed away and given place to higher forms. This applies equally to the aboriginal as to the platypus and the kangaroo. Just as the platypus, laying its eggs and feebly suckling its young, reveals a mammal in the making, so does the Aboriginal show us, at least in broad outline, what every man must have been like before he learned to read and write, domesticate animals, cultivate crops and use a metal tool. It has been possible to study in Australia human beings that still remain on the cultural level of men of the Stone Age (Spencer (1927) quoted in Attwood 1996: xiii). 1.1. 'Nothing of Interest' Aborigines ... face the unending task of resisting attempts, on one hand to cut them off from their 'heritage', and on the other to bury them within it as 'a thing of the past' (Beckett 1988: 212). I first visited Dubbo,1 New South Wales, in December 1997. The purpose of my visit was to talk to some of the local Aboriginal people, introduce myself and my research plans, and seek the approval of the local Aboriginal people to conduct field-work for my proposed study. I had already spent over twelve months in Sydney, researching the literature and attempting to produce an appropriate research proposal for this thesis. In November 1997,1 came to the conclusion that my main areas of interest were: Aboriginal women and native title. I had come from Iceland to Australia already with the aim of exploring some aspects of the lives of Aboriginal women. The attractive proposition of addressing this interest in the context of native title research was extended to me by another anthropologist, an acquaintance of mine, who had long experience of anthropological research in Aboriginal communities in New South Wales, and who 1 There is a detailed discussion o f the history o f Dubbo and its Aboriginal population in Chapters Five and Six.

CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) broke ground in its native country for dealing bluntly with one of the most tragic aspects of Australian history: the racist treatment of the aboriginal population. Adapted faithfully from the 1972 novel by Thomas Keneally, the film concerns a young man of mixed race in turn-of-the-century Australia who feels torn between the values and aspirations of white society, on the one hand, and his aboriginal roots, on the other, and who ultimately takes to violence against his perceived white oppressors. This essay re-views The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith from the following angles: its historical context; its place in the New Australian Cinema; its graphic violence; and the subsequent careers of the film’s director, Fred Schepisi, and its star, Tommy Lewis. Occasionally, Hollywood and British production companies would turn up to use the country as a backdrop for films that ranged from the classic (On the Beach [1959]) to the egregious (Ned Kelly [1970], starring Mick Jagger). But the local movie scene, for the most part, was sleepy and unimaginative and very few Australian films traveled abroad. Then, without warning, Australia suddenly experienced an efflorescence of imaginative filmmaking, as movies such as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), and Breaker Morant (1980) began to be shown all over the world.

    A caring and hard-working mum The life of Clara ‘Minnie’ Broadie 1899-1980 By Julie Poulter © 2019 Clara Broadie was my paternal great grandmother. She died when I was eight years old and I only have a few memories of her, despite her being in my life at least weekly for all those years. I am in the process of piecing together her life, with the help of family members who knew her better than I. She was known as Nan Hill to me and her death in 1980 was the first death that really affected me. It’s when I learnt that people you love do go away forever. A few years later my cousins and I held a séance trying to communicate with her one last time; we weren’t successful, but it just shows how important a part of our lives she had been. She was a tiny woman who left a large imprint on our lives. Clara Broadie was born on the 6th September 1899 in Wattle Flat, near Bathurst, New South Wales. Her parents were George Broadie and Ellen Core. Clara was their first child, born four and a half months after her parents had married. Clara was delivered by her grandmother Mary Ann Core. Family legend is that Clara was born prematurely and was so small she had to wrapped in cotton wool and kept alive with goat’s milk. September in that part of Australia is a crisp affair, with average temperatures at night around two degrees. It is not known how premature Clara was, but she was clearly strong enough to survive her parents care and survival methods.

    Mr William Charles Wentworth IV Four generations after his great grandfather endowed Sydney University and served on the governing body of the new institution, William Charles Wentworth IV (pictured below) was back to receive an honorary Doctorate of the University at a ceremony held at 11.30am on 15 March 1996. Dr Wentworth was joined in the celebration by the former Prime Minister, Sir John Gorton, who appointed him, then Liberal MP for Mackellar, as Minister for Social Security and Aboriginal Affairs in his government in 1968. In 1849 William Charles Wentworth moved in the Legislative Council for the creation of the University of Sydney. The legislation was passed in 1850 and Wentworth became a member of the governing body from its inception until 1872. His statue in this Great Hall commemorates our debt where, despite his warning that leaving home to go to a university overseas was usually detrimental to the morals of young men without compensating improvement to their minds, young William Wentworth IV, whom we honour today, did not enrol at the University of Sydney but at New College, Oxford. He graduated in Classics and earned a Blue in athletics. He returned to Australia at the age of 23, worked briefly as a factory hand in Lever Bros.

Auchmuty This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 2, (MUP), 1967 D'Arcy Wentworth (1762?-1827), medical practitioner and public servant, was born near Portadown, Ireland, the sixth of the eight children of D'Arcy Wentworth and his wife, Martha Dickson, also of County Armagh. The first of the Irish Wentworths to come to Australia could trace his ancestry through twenty generations from Robert of Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire in the thirteenth century. His descendant, D'Arcy Wentworth, went to Ireland as agent in Athlone to Wentworth Dillon, fourth earl of Roscommon, during the reign of Charles II, served in 1689 in the army of William III and established himself as a landowner at Fyanstown Castle in County Meath. Some Irish Wentworths intermarried into the leading Anglo-Irish families, but Robert, the third of the Irish Wentworths of Fyanstown Castle, was an impecunious barrister with political ambitions which he failed to realize even though a distant kinsman of the marquis of Rockingham, and under him the family resources were completely dissipated. His son D'Arcy, the father of the subject of this sketch, was an innkeeper at Portadown; but however far the Irish Wentworths had financially fallen from their high estate, they still claimed relationship with Rockingham, Lord Fitzwilliam and the earl of Strafford. By 1822 William Wentworth, the elder brother of D'Arcy of Parramatta, was probably the senior representative of the male line of the family which had established itself at Wentworth Woodhouse, though he had no hereditary claim to the earldom of Strafford.

    INTRODUCTION The Australian poet, Henry Lawson, referred to Darlinghurst Gaol in his poem “One Hundred and Three” as “Starvinghurst Goal” where prisoners were kept alone in dark cells and starved. This is the stereotype of the Victorian era gaol, whereas reality was quite different after the reforms initiated by New South Wales politician, Henry Parkes. His Select Committee of 1861 found the food in New South Wales gaols to be abundant, good and wholesome by contrast. There is also a contrasting reality for death rates in these gaols. The aim of this thesis is to show the reality of causes of death in the late Victorian era gaols by comparing the death rates and causes of death in Darlinghurst Gaol, Sydney’s main gaol from 1841 to 1914 and Auburn State Prison, the oldest existing prison in the New York State prison system, dating from 1817. Auburn Correctional Facility, as it is now known, gave its name to the “Auburn System” which included being the first institution to use separate cells for inmates, congregate work during the day, enforced silence, lockstep walking, striped uniforms and the use of the lash, or corporal punishment, as a form of punishment. It was the focus of great interest in penology and influenced the subsequent construction of many similar prisons in the USA and overseas. There has been no previous analysis of the records on the various causes of death in Victorian era gaols or the death rates in these gaols and no comparative study of gaol 1 death rates to the relevant general population to see if they were better or worse (worse being the popular perception prior to the results of the research involved in this thesis).

The Sydney Morning Herald of 27 August 1925 reported the first speech given by a female Member of Parliament (hereafter MP) in New South Wales. In the Legislative Assembly on the previous day, Millicent Preston-Stanley, Nationalist Party Member for the Eastern Suburbs, created history. According to the Herald: ‘Miss Stanley proceeded to illumine the House with a few little shafts of humour. “For many years”, she said, “I have in this House looked down upon honourable members from above. And I have wondered how so many old women have managed to get here - not only to get here, but to stay here”. The Herald continued: ‘The House figuratively rocked with laughter. Miss Stanley hastened to explain herself. “I am referring”, she said amidst further laughter, “not to the physical age of the old gentlemen in question, but to their mental age, and to that obvious vacuity of mind which characterises the old gentlemen to whom I have referred”. Members obviously could not afford to manifest any deep sense of injury because of a woman’s banter. They laughed instead’. Preston-Stanley’s speech marks an important point in gender politics. It introduced female participation in the Twenty-seventh Parliament. It stands chronologically midway between the introduction of responsible government in the 1850s and the Fifty-first Parliament elected in March 1995.

Bob is one of the great figures of Australian cultural history, at different times working as a leading anthropologist, a central figure in the study of indigenous art, a museum director and a driving force behind many of the international blockbuster art shows to travel to Australia. His early training as an anthropologist saw him doing fieldwork in remote Australia, and led to him becoming a museum curator in the 1960s and 70s. He was the founding director of the Australia Council’s Aboriginal Arts Board, perhaps most famous for its support of the Papunya Tula artists. He was the Director of the Museum of Victoria from 1984-90, the founding chairman of the National Museum of Australia and the founding chairman of the National Portrait Gallery. He has also for many years been the chief executive of Art Exhibitions Australia which brought to Australia significant exhibitions, including the Entombed Warriors from China (1982), Claude Monet (1985), Van Gogh (1993) and Rembrandt (1997). Bob is an ardent bibliophile, and his Library reflects the discerning taste of a knowledgeable and educated collector. Some books are of such rarity that they are known in only a handful of copies, and his collection embraces early Australian printing, early works on the Australian Aborigines, the major early voyage accounts, as well as works on early settlement and inland exploration.
