In this study I explore four depictions of Indigenous Australians by white Australian writers. Thomas Keneally’s The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1972) depicts a half-caste Aborigine’s attempt to enter white society in a racially-antipathetic world that precipitates his ruin. Children’s author Colin Thiele develops friendships between white and Aboriginal children in frightening and dangerous landscapes in both Storm Boy (1963) and Fire in the Stone (1973). Nobel laureate Patrick White sets A Fringe of Leaves (1976) in a world in which Ellen Roxburgh’s quest for freedom comes only through her captivity by the Aborigines. I use whiteness and masculinity studies as theoretical frameworks in my analysis of these depictions. Dr. Johnson is one of the most brilliant people I have been fortunate enough to know in my university career. He is also a painstaking editor. From my first experiences with Dr. Johnson as an undergraduate, I have come to understand and appreciate his New Critical approach to poetry. I have often said that Dr. Johnson is a poetry guru, as in my estimation there is absolutely no one as knowledgeable of poems and the function of words. I hope to use some of what I have been taught by Dr. Johnson in my own classes in the future. I further acknowledge my thesis committee: Dr. Phyllis Ann Thompson, Dr. Karen Ruth Kornweibel, and Dr. Katharine Weiss. All of my committee members have spent many days reading my work, as long as it was, and provided excellent feedback. I credit their guidance and faith in me to be the main reason I kept trudging along and did not stop asking questions or trying to improve in my writing. I feel that in my selection of a thesis committee, I chose some of the most gifted professors at ETSU. Dr. Thompson is a children’s literature specialist and eighteenth century scholar who has spent a tremendous amount of time answering my questions and advising me on my articulation of ideas and approaches in writing. Her advice on the Colin Thiele chapter was especially significant. Dr. Kornweibel has an immense knowledge of race studies and was important in the formation of my introduction as well as the theories I used in this study. She always allowed me to discuss my ideas with her in order to better articulate the weighty issues I was exploring. Dr. Weiss is an accomplished modern scholar with an excellent background in postcolonial studies as well as a 6 wonderful editor. She was an amazing professor in all of her classes that I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in as an undergraduate and graduate student. My thesis would have never been successful without the kindness of my mentors in Australia. I want to especially acknowledge Dr. Anne Brewster, Senior Lecturer in the School for English, Media, and Performing Arts at New South Wales University in Sydney, Australia. My initial plans for this proJect would have had me undertake two dissertations’ worth of material, but Dr. Brewster helped me to decide what was most beneficial, encouraged me in theoretical frameworks, and gave me a list of critics to examine. She helped me to further narrow the scope and focus of my proJect. Dr. Brewster met with me at her office in the Webster Building at the University of New South Wales, taking time out of her busy schedule and introduced me to some of the graduate students she supervises as well as her colleague, Dr. Elizabeth McMahon, a Patrick White scholar and the Immediate Past President of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature. Dr. Brewster also hosted me in Wollongong as I attended the ASAL conference with her, which has been one of the highlights of my career in academia. Dr. Brewster’s own work with Aboriginal life-narratives and whiteness studies are extremely valuable to my own research and the field at large. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Brewster’s work receives world-wide acclaim and recognition. A special thanks, as well, to the participants and organizers of the ASAL conference at the University of Wollongong, especially, Dr. Elizabeth McMahon, who graciously allowed a wide-eyed American graduate student to sit in on their conference and engage in conversation with some of his biggest heroes in the field of Australian literature. Many of these critics’ work, including John Beston, Dr. Elizabeth Webby, Dr. Anne Brewster, and Dr. Graham Huggan, appear in this study. It argues that the current assumptions of IIrace" are mistaken and lead to misunderstanding and misdi­ rected social policy. A rethinking of the notions of IIrace" requires making a paradigmatic shift of the old categories of IIrace" and IIrace relations" to a new language that rejects ' IIrace" as a descriptive and an analytical category. It examines the processes through which IIracist" social poli­ cies are enacted against Asian immigrants in contemporary Southern California. INTRODUCTION The "race" language in contemporary scholarly and media dis­ course in the United States is most ubiquitous. Major media head­ lines after the Los Angeles riots included "Race and Rage" (U.S. News and World Report), "Rethinking Race and Crime in America" and "Beyond Black and White" (Newsweek), "Why Race Still Divides American and its People" (Time) and more recently, "Blacks vs Browns" (Atlantic Monthly). In the aftermath of the riots, academics and journalists analyzed the riots as though it were a matter of "race relations": first it was a problem between blacks and whites, then between blacks and Koreans, and then between blacks and Latinos, and back to blacks and whites as public attention focuses on the Reginald Denny incident as the case goes to trial. The intent of this paper is not to attempt to grasp the meanings and the causes of the earth-shaking events in Los Angeles, but to deconstruct the worn-out vocabulary of "race" and "race relations" and the narrow framework that has dominated academic writing, official governmental practices, and discourse on social relations.

CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) broke ground in its native country for dealing bluntly with one of the most tragic aspects of Australian history: the racist treatment of the aboriginal population. Adapted faithfully from the 1972 novel by Thomas Keneally, the film concerns a young man of mixed race in turn-of-the-century Australia who feels torn between the values and aspirations of white society, on the one hand, and his aboriginal roots, on the other, and who ultimately takes to violence against his perceived white oppressors. This essay re-views The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith from the following angles: its historical context; its place in the New Australian Cinema; its graphic violence; and the subsequent careers of the film’s director, Fred Schepisi, and its star, Tommy Lewis. But the local movie scene, for the most part, was sleepy and unimaginative and very few Australian films traveled abroad. Then, without warning, Australia suddenly experienced an efflorescence of imaginative filmmaking, as movies such as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), and Breaker Morant (1980) began to be shown all over the world.

    A caring and hard-working mum The life of Clara ‘Minnie’ Broadie 1899-1980 By Julie Poulter © 2019 Clara Broadie was my paternal great grandmother. She died when I was eight years old and I only have a few memories of her, despite her being in my life at least weekly for all those years. I am in the process of piecing together her life, with the help of family members who knew her better than I. She was known as Nan Hill to me and her death in 1980 was the first death that really affected me. It’s when I learnt that people you love do go away forever. A few years later my cousins and I held a séance trying to communicate with her one last time; we weren’t successful, but it just shows how important a part of our lives she had been. She was a tiny woman who left a large imprint on our lives. Clara Broadie was born on the 6th September 1899 in Wattle Flat, near Bathurst, New South Wales. Her parents were George Broadie and Ellen Core. Clara was their first child, born four and a half months after her parents had married. Clara was delivered by her grandmother Mary Ann Core. Family legend is that Clara was born prematurely and was so small she had to wrapped in cotton wool and kept alive with goat’s milk. September in that part of Australia is a crisp affair, with average temperatures at night around two degrees. It is not known how premature Clara was, but she was clearly strong enough to survive her parents care and survival methods.

Jane Frugtneit A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Humanities James Cook University August 2007 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to find a correlation between food as symbol and food as necessity, as represented in selected Australian novels by Christina Stead, Patrick White and Thea Astley. Food as a springboard to a unique interpretation of the selected novels has been under-utilised in academic research. Although comparatively few novels were selected for study, on the basis of fastidiousness, they facilitated a rigorous hermeneutical approach to the interpretation of food and its inherent symbolism. The principle behind the selection of these novels lies in the complexity of the prose and how that complexity elicits the “transformative powers of food” (Muncaster 1996, 31). The thesis examines both the literal and metaphorical representations of food in the novels and relates how food is an inextricable part of ALL aspects of life, both actual and fictional. Food sustains, nourishes and, intellectually, its many components offer unique interpretative tools for textual analysis. Indeed, the overarching structure of the thesis is analogous with the processes of eating, digestion and defecation. For example, following a discussion of the inextricable link between food, quest and freedom in Chapter One, which uncovers contrary attitudes towards food in the novels discussed, the thesis presents a more complex psychoanalytic theory of mental disorders related to food in Chapter Two.
