LEIBNIZ’S MONADS VIS-À-VIS THE IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH George Franklin Umeh* Abstract Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz published little during his lifetime, and his philosophical masterpiece, Monadology is such a triumph of succinct expression that, to fully interpret it, one must look at many other works and to his correspondence, in order to know the detailed arguments which underlie its conclusions. Leibniz raised a problem in his attempt to compare his monads with the human soul, sharing the same features of immortality. Philosophers are divided in this idea, while some refute it as illogical, some still accept it though with a pinch of salt, saying that he is not the originator of the idea. However, I salute his courage for taken such a bold step in making this delicate comparison of the monads and souls’ immortality. It is also worthy of note that more philosophers have written on the immortality of the soul but the most classical of them all is that of Thomas Aquinas. The importance of this work is to help us understand the deep relationship between the monads and the human souls. To achieve this, the method of comparative analysis of the ideas is going to be used, giving it an interpretation to discover the strength of Leibniz’s argument and his flaws. Solution to the flaws will be proffered. Keywords: Monads, Soul, Immortality, Substance Introduction Interpretation of Leibniz is made doubly difficult by the fact that he changed his mind about certain of his most influential ideas during the course of his lifetime, while remaining obstinately attached to them and unable overtly to reject them. -

I have added a good deal, but I make no apology, now that theT whole may fall under American eyes, for preserving the tone and attitude of a detached observer. Not at all on the ground that “ to see ourselves as others see us” would be to see ourselves truly; on the contrary, I agree with Spinoza where he says that other people’s idea of a man is apt to be a better expression of their nature than of his. I accept this prin ciple in the present instance, and am willing it should be ap plied to the judgments contained in this book, in which the reader may see chiefly expressions of my own feelings and hints of my own opinions. Only an American—and I am not one except by long association1—can speak for the heart of America. I try to understand it, as a family friend may who has a different temperament j but it is only my own mind that I speak for at bottom, or wish to speak for. -

limbo Núm. 40, 2020, pp. 63-93 issn: 0210-1602 Th e Dewey-Santayana Rivalry Richard M. Rubin abstract John Dewey and George Santayana sparred with each other for almost fi ft y years. Th eir disputes concerning ontological and psychological issues reveal deep-seated disagreements about morals, politics, social progress, and the nature and role of art and philosophy in human life. Th is survey goes through their engagement chronologically, starting with Dewey’s fi rst review of Th e Life of Reason in 1906 and ending with a posthumously published essay by Santayana. It shows that the opposition of both philosophies is not just an abstract confl ict between opposing theories but an active clash in which elemental misunderstanding combined with penetrating insight. Kegley Abstract Th e latest volume of the Critical Edition of Santayana’s Life of Reason, namely, Book Five: Reason in Science is a welcome addition to the world of Santayana scholarship and to those interested in understanding science and its role in the pursuit of human knowledge. Science is fi rmly connected with common sense and common knowledge allowing us to expose current pretensions about science. Santayana’s reasonable naturalism is a valuable viewpoint for dealing with the discoveries and contentions of the contemporary philosophical and scientifi c scene. His distinction between two kinds of science connects science to morality and ethics and allows exploration of this relationship. Yours sincerely GSantayana 1Josephine Preston Peabody (1874–1922) was a poet and dramatist whose plays kept alive the tradition of poetic drama in America. Her play, The Piper, was produced in 1909. She was married to Lionel Simeon Marks, a Harvard mechanical engineering professor. 2Reginald Chauncey Robbins (1871–1955) was a writer who took his A.B. from Harvard in 1892 and then did graduate work there. Modrak From the beginning the Nicomachean Ethics is about practical thinking, how we choose or should choose to act and to urge others to act.1 Any form of thought that requires the conceptualization of one or more actions is a type of practical thinking.2 Thus the deliberations of a legislator, the scheming of a huckster and the choices of a good woman are all instances of practical reason. In view of its importance, it is especially disturbing that Aristotle's account of practical thinking is open to the charge of inadequacy on two major fronts: ( 1 ) the cogency of his analysis of moral weakness; and (2) the absence of a genuine conceptual niche for ohronesis.
