We have a fantastic site just on the outskirts of Rochdale that provides many opportunities for schools and members of the public alike. I have been the Facility Manager at Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre more than 10 years. Over that time we have had many schools visit us, primary, secondary and colleges. Pupils and staff always leave having had a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Sailing KS3 KS4 What is it? Get a feel for the sport as you become an independent sailor. Before you head out on the the water, we will cover the basics of water safety and sailing. Once we feel confident students are ready, we will set out courses to follow and give additional instruction on the water.

Qualifications: RYA Sailing Stage 2 can be completed in 2 days or in an equivalent number of weekly sessions.

The sailing instructor was very calm and reassuring giving clear instructions. All staff are very professional and very good with all children especially SEN.

Windsurfing KS3 KS4 What is it? Windsurfing basics will be covered on land through an instructor brief and our ‘board-demo,’ where you get to learn about balance and controlling the board and sail. Head out on the water with an instructor and use these skills to follow a course and more.

Qualifications: RYA Windsurfing Stage 2 can be completed in 2 days or in an equivalent number of weekly sessions.

Paddlesports KS3 KS4 What is it? Covering Canoeing, Kayaking and Rafted Canoeing, with a brief introduction to paddling we can head out onto the water and use our harbour area for skills, team and individual games. We can then progress to a journey and explore the beautiful lake.

11 Minisplash KS1 What is it? Aimed at reception age pupils this session is designed to build pupils’ confidence in and around the water. Using fun and games we start at the water’s edge then head out on an adventure before coming back to finish the session feeling more confident around the water.

12 KS1 KS2 Raft Building KS3 KS4 What is it? In small groups students are given the task to design and build a raft that will hold all of their team. We will give them instructions, hints and tips as they work together to create their raft.

After instruction on how to paddle the raft, each team will compete in group tasks whilst on the water.

My son had Raft Building today at the activity centre. The kids had the best time ever, they just laughed and laughed. I would highly recommend this activity. Thanks for a great day. Parent

14 KS1 KS2 Rock Climbing KS3 KS4 What is it? Starting from the ground we’ll warm up and then use the wall to introduce basic movement skills. In smaller groups we can set off on the wall and start learning the ropes, belaying and knot tying. Challenge yourself on our overhang.

Qualifications: NICAS Level 1 can be completed in a minimum of 6 hours over weekly sessions NICAS Level 2 can be completed in a minimum of 12 hours over weekly sessions.

Here at Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre we promote activities that complement different curricular, they provide an experience that will be memorable for years to come. What do I need to bring? Wet Activities: Each pupil should bring the following: A towel, swimwear and footwear to get wet in (old shoes/ trainers are the best). We provide wetsuits and buoyancy aids. Land Activities: Suitable clothing and footwear that will keep you warm and dry. Is there any reason you would cancel an activity? In the event of bad weather causing a safety concern, we would offer an alternative or re-schedule the activity. What documents do you provide? We will send out copies of our Insurance, Adventure Activities license and an EV4 form. The Adventure Activities license covers all of our risk assessments. These can be made available for viewing by appointment. How accessible are you? We have a number of facilities on site that are accessible. These include toilets, changing facilities, hoists and activity equipment. We are set up to run the majority of activities to meet the needs of our participants. It would be advisable to get in contact with the centre before to discuss your needs. What other amenities are there? There is a pay and display car park, please arrive early as it can be busy. There are also a number of separate food outlets that can be used if you do not want to bring your own food
