Despite moving with the times, they are, however, no longer in the best position to sort out for themselves the many problems that confront them. Corruption, money laundering, match-fixing, misplaced government interven- tion, legal disputes of various sorts, and so on, can, indeed, only be dealt with effectively if authority is clearly defined and if the status and independence of football’s governing bodies is recognised by law and they are provided with the necessary means. The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model.

  • Street Soccer
STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.

  • Conference 2015 Special
R.A. BOARD VOICEOVER “Conference 2015 Special” Referees’ Association Announcement At meeting of the RA Board on Sunday 5th July 2015 the following were elected: Chairman: Paul Field Vice Chairman: Ian Campbell Treasurer: Eddie McGrath Further announcements will follow during the coming weeks as we continue to structure the RA Board. ************************************************************************************************************************************** THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN PAUL (Paul Field) I have been a member of the R.A. Board for 5 years during which time I have seen seven different Chairman, a Board of Inquiry regarding the general management of the RA, and we had an office facility which was not fit-for-purpose, The RA has now started to move forward and this is now history but let’s remember one quote which typifies the organisation: Henry Ford said – “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. In the case of The R.A., a poor product which is not relevant to majority of the Refereeing family, declining membership and often people being in office for far too long. In my view, The R.A. now has to move forward and there are sound building blocks for the future which are positive steps. We need to remember that our main reason for existence is to provide a platform for on-going training, development, mentoring and mutual support. The thriving LRAs are the ones that concentrate on this, have lively debates, a good social side and little business transacted at meetings. As a collective (individually and LRA’s) we are all responsible! There is an urgent need to change people’s perception of the RA and the quality of the membership experience.
