Based on the City Council Census – Moss Side ward (2011) lone parents living with dependent children is significantly higher than the Manchester average. However, adults living alone is slightly lower than the Manchester average and is significantly less than in areas such as and Whalley Range.

7 Work & Employment

Statistics from (2011) demonstrates that Moss Side has a higher percentage of Job Seekers Allowance claimants than the both the averages for the wider Manchester area and nationally. The ward also has higher proportions of Council Tax Benefits and Housing Benefits than the national average, as well as primary and secondary children claiming free school meals.

Economic inactivity in Moss Side (41.6%) is nearly twice the national average (23.2%). However, a large majority of those economically inactive are students, which accounts for around a quarter of the whole population of Moss Side as a whole (NOMIS, 2011).

9 Crime

Between March 2015 and February 2016, anti- social behaviour was reported 659 times in Moss Side, which makes up 36% of all crimes in the area (Police Portal, 2016).

10 Deprivation

According to data published by the Public Intelligence Population Publications: Deprivation (2015), Moss Side is one of the most deprived wards in the country – with half the ward being considered in the top 2-5% of deprivation nationally.

The other half of the ward is in the top 11-40% in national deprivation.

11 Community & Environment

The Manchester City Council resident’s telephone survey (2011) indicates that although only 17% of residents in Moss Side perceive high levels of anti-social behaviour in the area. The same survey showed that 28% of locals perceive there to be an issue with drug and alcohol abuse. High levels of anti-social behaviour in an area can contribute to feelings of isolation and hostility, leaving residents to feel unsafe within their neighbourhood.

The same survey (Manchester City Council resident’s telephone survey, 2011) found that only 42% of residents feel that they have the ability to influence decisions in the area. There is a danger that if people feel that their voice does not have a role in the community, this may result in disengagement and a lack of service user involvement. Although 90% of residents in Moss Side feel that those from diverse backgrounds get on well together, 34% of people feel that there is an issue with levels of respect in the neighbourhood. This could also be linked with the high levels of anti-social behaviour in the area (pp.10) and can contribute to feelings of segregation and hostility within a community.

22% of residents in Moss Side are unhappy with sport/leisure facilities and in the area (Manchester City Council, 2011). A further 29% are unhappy with the way public land is kept clean. However, 78% of residents were happy with sports/leisure facilities compared to just 66% in Manchester as a whole.

Manchester Refugee Support Network is an organisation that offers a variety of support services across Manchester and has several services based in Moss Side, aiming to support and empower refugee communities by exercising their rights and reducing isolation, poverty and unemployment.

There are a variety of services, places of worship, and community centres within Moss Side. However, due to the multi- cultural nature of the area, the residents rarely have an opportunity to integrate. The services available in Moss Side are often targeted at specific communities of need, rather than at the community as a whole. Although undertaking commendable work for the local area, segregated community services have an unintended consequence of isolating residents who do not feel they fit into the category of services available.
