American Politics: Plotting the Illegal Hawaiian Kingdom Overthrow and Illegal Annexation After the Civil War of 1861-1865 the Kingdom of Hawai’i was already in the crosshairs of more serious US annexation. The country was flush with money from unspent taxes imposed during the Civil War. It was secured from coast to coast and the Presidency was securely in the hands of Republican Union Civil War veterans who had defeated the secessionist Southern States Democrats and looked for expansion into the Pacific under their doctrine of divine destiny. The navy was expanded with iron warships and two of them under the command of Major General Schofield and Colonel Alexander had visited Honolulu in 1873 under the guise of a “friendly mission,” spying on the kingdom and mapping out the potential of Pearl Harbor as a navy base for expansion into the Pacific. In 1840 US Navy Commodore Charles Wilkes had first surveyed the Pearl Harbor area and described it as “the best and most capacious harbor in the Pacific.” Grover Cleveland, the leader of the pro-business Democrats, opposed imperialism, high tariffs, inflation, and subsidies and had established a reputation for relentlessly fighting the widespread political corruption of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Not actually running for president, he was unexpectedly chosen by his Democratic party as a compromise candidate and also unexpectedly won the presidential election, as the public had become sick of the widespread political corruption. He therefore won his first term in 1884 at a time of Republican political domination dating to 1861 which had become pro imperialistic and clamored for colonial expansion. -

Glocal Conversations Vol 7 (1) December 2019 http://gc.uofn.edu Business as Mission & Lessons Drawn from 19thcentury Hawaii—Part Two Paul Miller Email: [email protected] Abstract Part One of this paper addressed the positive and negative role “Business as mission” (BAM) played in 19th century Hawaii; its negative side being its contributory role to the loss of Hawaii’s monarchy (1893) and its independence (1898)—a tragedy contrary to the wishes of all the early actors, both native and foreign, who had embraced “business as mission.” This paper, Part Two, focuses on the lessons that can be drawn from this history. Too often the tale is told simplistically as one where the missionaries, or their descendants, lost their mission and greedily took over the kingdom. This paper concludes, rather, that serious mistakes were made on both sides: native Hawaiian and foreign-descended Hawaiians. It highlights native Hawaiian leaders’ own fateful, if understandable, embrace of “economic development” as the way forward for their nation;1 followed up by native Hawaiian commoners’ own economic falling behind; the result being a deeply divided society, which then set up a social tinderbox all-too-ready for conflagration should certain incendiary personalities strike the match—which is precisely what happened with Lorrin Thurston, King Kalākaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Hawaii’s history teaches important lessons: the need to understand and value cultural norms and values, the need to identify how economic gains impact the culture, and the need to be willing and able peacekeepers in the process of doing BAM. We don’t want a territorial government in which there shall be a Legislature elected by the votes of all the people. —William Richards Castle, New York Times, 4 February 1893 The evening of 12 August 1898 found the men who led the Republic of Hawai‘i in a boisterously celebratory mood. A large crowd of foreign diplomats, U.S. naval officers, local businessmen, and social elite had gathered for an official reception at ‘Iolani Palace—the for- mer residence of Hawaiian monarchy.1 Hundreds of incandescent lights draped the building’s facade, lending a luminescent glow to the palace yard. A magnificent pyrotechnical display of fireworks filled the skies above. Inside, lights drew attention to the elegantly uniformed orchestra of the government band stationed in the Grand Ronald Williams Jr. PhD is a faculty member at the Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, UH Mānoa. He holds a masters in Pacific Island Studies and a doctorate in history. He has published in both academic and public forums on varied topics. Lili’uokalani’s trial followed the unsuccessful attempt by her supporters, in 1895, to overthrow the Republic of Hawai’i and reinstate her as Queen. Misprision is the concealment of knowledge of an act of treason by failing to disclose it to the appropriate officials. -

ronald williams jr. To Raise a Voice in Praise: The Revivalist Mission of John Henry Wise, 1889–1896. As the long tumultuous summer of 1887 came to a close in Hono- lulu, the Protestant “Sons of the Mission”1 found themselves in quite a conundrum. Members of the church administration had been sup- portive of, and involved in, the clandestine Hawaiian League that had recently forced a new constitution—commonly referred to as the Bayonet Constitution—upon the ruling sovereign of the Hawaiian Kingdom, His Majesty David La‘amea Kalākaua.2 Hawaiian Evangeli- cal Association (HEA) officer Rev. Oliver Pomeroy Emerson termed the act a “revolution” and wrote proudly concerning this “noble stand the sons of the mission took.”3 The new governing document both stripped most of the executive powers from the monarch and restruc- tured voting qualifications for the elected legislature—essentially transfering much of the governing power in the islands to League interests. HEA officer Rev. Charles McEwan Hyde noted in a letter of 26 August, “The government, i.e. the executive power, is taken out of the hands of the Hawaiian people, who are utterly incapable of man- aging the government, or any business as we Americans understand business.”4 The political goals of these mission sons seemed well on their way to being achieved. Yet what of “the mission?” Ronald Williams Jr. is a graduate of, and instructor at, the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is currently a Ph.D. (ABD) student in the university’s Department of History. -
