Deutsche Bank has been involved in contemporary art since 1979 and the ‘ArtWorks’ concept is an integral part of our Corporate Citizenship programme. We offer employees, clients and the general public access to the collection and partner with museums, art fairs and other institutions to encourage emerging talent. The Art of Quotation. Forms and Themes of the Art Quote, 1990–2010. An Essay Nina Heydemann, Abu Dhabi I. Introduction A “Japanese” Mona Lisa? An “improved” Goya? A “murdered” Warhol? In 1998, the Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura staged himself as Mona Lisa.1 Five years later, the British sibling duo Jake and Dinos Chapman ‘rectified’ Francisco de Goya’s etching series „The Disas- ters of War“ by overpainting the figures with comic faces.2 In 2007, Richard Prince spoke about his intention in the 1990s of having wanted to murder Andy Warhol.3 What is it in artists and artworks from the past that prompts so many diverse reactions in contempo- rary art today? In which forms do contemporary artists refer to older works of art? And what themes do they address with them? NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lauren Kistner, Marketing & Communications Manager August 1, 2017 314.615.5277 / [email protected] Laumeier Sculpture Park Acquires Tony Tasset’s Deer, 2015, in Honor of 40th Anniversary Year (ST. LOUIS, MO)—Laumeier Sculpture Park announced today the acquisition and upcoming installation of a new sculpture by artist Tony Tasset, whose Eye, 2007, is already one of the most iconic sculptures in the Park. Tasset’s Deer, 2015, is a larger-than-life, 12-foot-tall sculpture of a white-tailed doe made of painted, steel-reinforced fiberglass. The major acquisition honors and celebrates the nonprofit organization’s 40th Anniversary year. The sculpture will be accessioned into Laumeier’s Permanent Collection and installed in the Way Field in August 2017. Tony Tasset is arguably one of the most inventive sculptors working in the United States today. Since the mid-1990s, he has created increasingly ambitious sculptures; his cunning work explores how we collectively dwell in the landscape. Deer celebrates the unique environment created when art frames nature. The artwork’s size suggests how nature is out of balance in today’s urban and suburban spaces, and how humans impact the species around us. The surreal juxtaposition of the super-sized deer emerging from the woods dramatizes the relationship of what it means to be human, the identity of sculpture and their respective places in nature. “As one of the first and largest dedicated sculpture parks in the country, Laumeier Sculpture Park has set many of the standards for public practice that combine curated public art with the interpretation and stewardship of a traditional indoor museum,” said Dana Turkovic, Associate Curator at Laumeier Sculpture Park. -

Artist Richard Deacon has selected a broad range of works by over 30 artists spanning the last 105 years on the idea of ‘abstraction’ in drawing. Deacon says: ‘This exhibition has no ambitions to be a universal survey, but in selecting a show around the idea of abstract drawing, these various strands – inscriptive, calligraphic, ornamental, generative, individuating and identifying – have all featured.’ Richard Deacon CBE is one of the most important British sculptors of his generation and has exhibited internationally since the early 1980s. He won the Turner prize in 1987, and a major retrospective exhibition of his work is presented at Tate Britain in 2014 (5 February – 27 April). The activity of drawing is crucial to his work as a sculptor, which engages with processes and means of manufacture. This deep interest in making as an activity is evident in his selection of works for Abstract Drawing. The earliest works exhibited here are drawings made in 1906 by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, recently heralded as producing the earliest forms of Western abstraction, and in 1917/18 by Kazimir Malevich, regarded as the father of abstraction. -
