  • The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock
GENRE AND/AS DISTINCTION: THE MARS VOLTA AND THE SYMBOLIC BOUNDARIES OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK R. Justin Frankeny A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Musicology in the School of Music. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Aaron Harcus Michael A. Figueroa David F. Garcia © 2020 R. Justin Frankeny ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT R. Justin Frankeny: Genre and/as Distinction: The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock (Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Harcus) In the early 2000’s, The Mars Volta’s popularity among prog(ressive) rock fandom was, in many ways, a conundrum. Unlike 1970s prog rock that drew heavily on Western classical music, TMV members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala routinely insisted on the integral importance of salsa music to their style and asserted an ambivalent relationship to classic prog rock. This thesis builds on existing scholarship on cultural omnivorousness to assert that an increase in omnivorous musical tastes since prog rock’s inception in the 1970s not only explains The Mars Volta’s affiliation with the genre in the early 2000s, but also explains their mixed reception within a divided prog rock fanbase. Contrary to existing scholarship that suggests that the omnivore had largely supplanted the highbrow snob, this study suggests that the snob persisted in the prog rock fanbase during progressive rock’s resurgence (ca. 1997-2012), as distinguished by their assertion of the superiority of prog rock through discourses of musical complexity adapted from classical music.

UNIVERSIDAD PONTIFICIA COMILLAS Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations Final Degree Dissertation A LOCATION ANALYSIS FOR CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S ESTABLISHMENT OF RESIDENT SHOWS Student: María Domínguez Pérez Supervisor: Santiago Urío Rodríguez Madrid, April 2018 “They can do anything, from a permanent location on Broadway, to a traveling show that pops into towns for two to three weeks, to a show that just appears for a day on a football field. That is easy to say and very hard to execute” - Dawn Hudson (cited in Rastello, 2017) - ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I would like to thank Santiago Urío for his constant support and guidance, not only throughout the elaboration of this dissertation, but also during the past couple of years. Through his lessons and expertise, I have been able to discover my passion for International Strategy and Business Management, which I hope to develop further during my professional career. In addition, a special thanks to Jesús Méndez for always lending an ear and for encouraging me to strive for excellence and pursue my dreams of working for a major entertainment firm such as Cirque du Soleil. Finally, to my family for their words of encouragement and unconditional support. Thank you for helping me find my way out of the most stressful moments during the year. Abstract With the development of the international business field, the study of location gained importance. It began to distinguish between firms that initiated their internationalisation process to reduce production costs and those that did it in order to access new markets.

  • Homemaking, Making Home, and Femininity in Contemporary Women’S Filmmaking and Literature of the Métropol and the Maghreb
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: HOMEMAKING, MAKING HOME, AND FEMININITY IN CONTEMPORARY WOMEN’S FILMMAKING AND LITERATURE OF THE MÉTROPOL AND THE MAGHREB DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Stacey Weber-Fève, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Judith Mayne, Advisor Professor Danielle Marx-Scouras _________________________________ Advisor Professor Jennifer Willging Graduate Program in French and Italian Copyright by Stacey Weber-Fève 2006 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the problematic location of home, the traditional female activity of homemaking, and the representation of female subjectivity in contemporary cinematic, (auto)biographical, and fictional texts by several contemporary French and Francophone women artists. These writers and filmmakers question the home as a female interior space in which female protagonists traditionally become objects or accessories. They also bring to the fore multiple representations of contemporary French, Algerian, and Tunisian femininity. In these texts, the artists embrace and foreground domestic space, female housekeeping activities, and women’s ideological roles in order to (re)appropriate the normative gender discourses of their homelands. They accomplish these goals by revealing how the home within each society functions subversively as a space of socio-political-historical contention. Using Assia Djebar’s work as a source of theoretical departure, this study illustrates the representation of women in body, by voice, and through the gaze in a collection of narratives created by French-speaking women artists from the Métropol and the Maghreb. Using feminist film theoretical and lifewriting critical perspectives, I examine the functions of the gaze and the effects of voicing the personal for women of France and North Africa.

Publication Date 2010 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Courtship, Violence, and the Formation of Marriage in the Early Modern Italian Novella Tradition By Sara Elizabeth Christina Russell A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Albert R. Ascoli, Chair Professor Barbara G. Spackman Professor Maureen C. Miller Spring 2010 Abstract Courtship, Violence, and the Formation of Marriage in the Early modern Italian Novella Tradition by Sara Elizabeth Christina Russell Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Albert R. Ascoli, Chair This dissertation examines the intersection of courtship, violence, and the formation of marriage in early modern Italian legal and fictional narratives. My investigation begins with the marriage causae of Gratian’s Concordia discordantium canonum, more commonly known as the Decretum, then moves on to a selection of novellas from Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron and culminates in a series of close readings from Bandello’s Novelle. My analysis of these texts reveals complexity and ambiguity in the representation of all stages of courtship and marriage formation in addition to depicting conflict between parents and offspring in the formation of marriage. Emphasizing the role of storytelling within canon law and the intrusion of legal systems (both real and fictional) into storytelling, my reading of coercion and violence is grounded in the broader historical context of courtship and marriage formation.
