#MNGZINE ISSUE # 02 Film in Focus: Moana as Piscean quest for heart restoration

Each month we will zoom in on a film that masterfully examines themes and stories that run concurrent with the discussions in our MANGO issue.

“The people you love will change you, the things you have learned will guide you, and nothing on earth can silence the quiet voice still inside you.”

I cannot get through a single viewing of Moana without collapsing into tears of deep resonance. In fact, my face is wet with emotion as I write this, because I went to fact check the quote above, and it took no more than a few seconds of her grandmother’s song to reduce me to sobs. I’m convinced Moana is enchanted with healing magic, and if you haven’t seen it yet, gift yourself its inspiration and beauty. Spoilers ahead.

There are three Disney films that are great loves of mine: The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Free Willy. I wasn’t sure I was going to watch Mo- ana. But on a despondent evening, whilst sitting in my Star Wars onesie I looked up the film times. The only screening left that day was at 5.55pm, listed in exactly that format. I was seeing a lot of recurring 5s at the time and so I took it as a sign. Didn’t even shower or change clothes. I went exactly as I was. That evening, Moana displaced all my great Disney loves forever.

Of the many, there are just two Piscean motifs

I want to elucidate for us. The first is to be a PAGE # 39 stranger at home. Moana is distinctly aware of her MOANA desire to live outside the cultural norms of her community, contrasted by duty and responsibility. She is open and connected to the magic of her environment, and entertains the spirits of the sea who have chosen her. Similarly, our desires are often the blueprint of our higher purpose; we can receive numerous signs and synchronicities that aren’t validated by the customs of our society. But in the fantasy world of Disney, Moana talking to the sea and treating it as her companion, is within the realm of possibility.

In this way Moana represents Pisces as the doorway between dimensions, and it is through this energy we can learn to trust what we cannot see, yet feel and in- tuit deeply. There are times when our faith is rewarded with confirmation or success, but there also times (as depicted in the film) when that trust is met with silence, or unexpected pain. In a poignant scene Moana tells the sea she cannot complete her purpose. “Choose someone else, please.” The sea concedes to her request, and it struck me as a beautiful depiction of the dance of free will, as well as the genuinely merciful response of god when we have really had enough of life.

Moana also has its own “Chimera”, our concept of the month, and the second Piscean motif. In her mission to restore the heart of Te Fiti, Moana believes she must defeat a fire demon. But she later realises the demon is Te Fiti, without her heart. In a scene of deep Piscean compassion, and I’m crying as I recount this, Moana risks her life by crossing the sea bed and facing the demon to offer Te Fiti her heart. We all become that fire demon when we believe the lie that there is strength in heartless living. During those moments of hell we hope something or someone will get close enough to us to risk connection, and offer us the restoration of feeling our hearts again.

It has a number of healing properties; boosting immunity, lowering cholesterol, and improv- ing digestion. It is is said to symbolise love, wealth and fertility.

RECIPE: MANGO & GINGER GIN FIZZ

As it’s Pisces season and they’re the alcohol lovers of the zodiac, I thought this month’s recipe should be a cheeky mango cocktail!

INGREDIENTS: 1 mango chopped into pieces Sparkling or tonic water Knob of fresh ginger 1 or 2 mint leaves 1/2 a lime Mint leaves A shot of gin (optional) Dash of Grenadine (optional)

METHOD: Please drink alcohol responsibly. Peel the ginger and add it to a blender with the chopped mango and grenadine syrup. Blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into a glass. Squeeze the juice of half a lime into the cup, and pour in a shot of gin. Mix with a spoon. Top the glass with tonic water until full. Add ice, a few mint leaves, and enjoy. PAGE # 42 PAGE
