You see a virologist dressed up in protective gear like Dustin Hofman in “Outbreak,” and a running caption: Ebola in Bulgaria*. Chief expert on Viruses in the Sofia Military Hospital professor Kamen Plochev speaking in front of TV cameras at the moment the ebola-suspected patient was hospitalized. I got a tad panicked, to be honest, but by the time I got to increasing the volume with the remote, the news pro- gram had moved on to another item. Since there were no current events shows on any of the other channels, I went online in search of information. This turned out to be a heart-attack-inducing mistake, because Bulgaria’s news sites have the tendency to exaggerate every bit of suspicion into a near-Apocalyspe. A half-maybe uttered in some ministry becomes “certain to happen;” every random word by a low-level bureucrat is treated as “official statement.” This is the end of journalism as we know it, since Bulgaria’s online and even mainstream media seem to have forgotten some of the cardinal rules of reporting.

Polit-Barometer The political parties in Bulgaria GEORGI KARASIMEONOV (EDITOR) Year 18, Issue 2 – April-June 2018 n The Presidency of Bulgaria of the EU Council can be judged as a successful political, logistical and communication plan. The theme of the “Western Balkans”, which had long been absent from the highest European forums, was back on the agenda again. Despite the difficulties and challenges faced by countries in the region, the prospects for integration open new horizons related to solving a long-standing controversy. The solution to the dispute over the name of Macedonia that Skopje and Athens reached shows that dialogue is possible in the name of a common European future. n With the BSP vote of no confidence in the government, the Socialists are again making an attempt at taking the initiative as an opposition, thus dictating the political agenda in the context of the finishing presidency. Security issues, especially the fight against crime, are an area where the government is demonstrating serious shortfalls and this is a good topic to be attacked.

  • BAROMETER Political Parties in Bulgaria
ANALYSIS Sofia BAROMETER Political parties in Bulgaria GEORGI KARASIMEONOV, PhD (Editor) Volume 17, Issue 2, April-June 2017 The new government, made up of GERB and United Patriots, seems stable at this stage. The participation in the cabinet of two co-chairs of the patriots is a guarantee for their close involvement in the country’s governance. At this stage, there are no more significant nega- tive reactions in Europe, due to the participation of nationalists in the government. Borisov’s foreign policy activity shows that in his third term of office he will try to strengthen his role on the international scene. With its first action in parliament, the BSP has shown that it will want to be strong opposition which governments will have to bear in mind. The call for resignation of the President of the National Assembly was evidence of this. Cornelia Ninova continues with reshaping the party, showing firmness and consistency in positions regarding its future development. A large number of the extraparliamentary parties in the right space are increasingly disin- tegrating. The intentions and calls for unification have been going on for years, but remain declarative. Mutual accusations of the failure in the parliamentary elections continue to be the focus of attention, which is a major obstacle to maintaining a normal and fair dialogue between the parties.
