Protein is made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units, called amino acids, which are linked to one another in long chains. The sequence of amino acids determines each protein’s unique structure and its specific function. There are 20 different amino acids that that can be combined to make every type of protein in the body. These amino acids fall into two categories: • Essential amino acids are required for normal body functioning, but they cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from food. Of the 20 amino acids, 9 are considered essential. • Nonessential amino acids can be made by the body from essential amino acids consumed in food or in the normal breakdown of body proteins. Of the 20 amino acids, 11 are considered nonessential. Where It Is Found Protein is found in a variety of foods, including: • Beans and peas • Dairy products (such as milk, cheese, and yogurt) • Eggs • Meats and poultry • Nuts and seeds • Seafood (fish and shellfish) • Soy products • Whole grains and vegetables (these generally provide less protein than is found in other sources) What It Does • Protein provides calories, or “energy” for the body.     ON THE NATURE OF BIOLOGICAL DATA 35 3 On the Nature of Biological Data Twenty-first century biology will be a data-intensive enterprise. Laboratory data will continue to underpin biology’s tradition of being empirical and descriptive. In addition, they will provide confirming or disconfirming evidence for the various theories and models of biological phenomena that researchers build. Also, because 21st century biology will be a collective effort, it is critical that data be widely shareable and interoperable among diverse laboratories and computer systems. This chapter describes the nature of biological data and the requirements that scientists place on data so that they are useful. 3.1 DATA HETEROGENEITY An immense challenge—one of the most central facing 21st century biology—is that of managing the variety and complexity of data types, the hierarchy of biology, and the inevitable need to acquire data by a wide variety of modalities. Biological data come in many types. For instance, biological data may consist of the following:1 • Sequences. Sequence data, such as those associated with the DNA of various species, have grown enormously with the development of automated sequencing technology. Background and Justification The World Health Organization, (WHO), identifies diet and nutrition as a lifestyle factor critical for maintenance of health and well-being, as well as a factor influencing risk of chronic disease. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity are examples of chronic diseases significantly related to diet and nutrition. Obesity is one of the most common conditions and is growing to epidemic proportions. The two most common associated co-morbidities of obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension, are highly prevalent health risks and are among the principal causes of death in the general population. Additionally, in third world countries, malnutrition is a very common cause of infection or death, especially in young children. Accordingly, knowledge of the basic elements of good nutrition and the biochemical pathways associated with the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrate offers important contributions to mitigate these health problems. The proposed dual degree program will provide the student with a core understanding of the mechanics of metabolism combined with advanced courses in public health and nutrition. This combined approach will yield a highly qualified and competitive public health practitioner trained to develop evidence based policy, programs, strategies and advocacy to address these health risks and problems.

They are attached to one another by peptide bonds forming a long chain of proteins. Amino acid structure and its classification • An amino acid contains both a carboxylic group and an amino group. Althought plant-based diets are at risk of nutritional deficiencies such as proteins, iron, vitamin D, calcium, iodine, omega-3, and vitamin B12, the available evidence shows that well planned vegetarian and vegan diets may be considered safe during pregnancy and lactation, but they require a strong awareness for a balanced intake of key nutrients.
