Lemmy Kilmister: Dogged Insolence in the Face of Mounting Opposition to the Contrary www.slickstermagazine.com /lemmy-kilmister-dogged-insolence-face-mounting-opposition-contrary/ Joe Mitchell In 2013, at the age of 67, rock icon Lemmy Kilmister, best known for his work as the leader of thrash metal progenitors, Motörhead, had a cardioverter defibrillator implanted in his chest. Though his notorious drug usage had been restricted since the early 90s when he began suffering from diabetes and hypertension, he refused to completely give up drinking and smoking after the procedure. It did make him reduce his alcohol intake. He finally gave up his “daily bottle of Jack Daniel’s” habit that he’d had since the mid-70s. Still, he readily admitted he had could not completely give up alcohol and cigarettes . He called this refusal, “Dogged insolence in the face of mounting opposition to the contrary.” That phrase may well distill not only Kilmister’s life, but the entire philosophy of Rock ‘n’ Roll as well. More than two years later, just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Kilmister died at about 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time in his two- bedroom apartment not far from his favorite hang-out, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, on Sunset Boulevard, where he was often enthralled in the playing of a particular video game. When Kilmister became too ill to leave his apartment, the owners of the Rainbow had the game moved to his home so he could continue to play it. It is said that Kilmister died sitting upright in a stool in front of the machine. -

The 5outh 'r Greatert Party Band Playr Again: Narhville 'r Legendary White AniMalr Reunite to 5old-0ut Crowdr By Elaine McArdle t's 10 p.m. on a sweltering summer n. ight in Nashville and standing room only at the renowned Exit/In bar, where the crowd - a bizarre mix of mid Idle-aged frat rats and former punk rockers - is in a frenzy. Some drove a day or more to get here, from Florida or Arizona or North Carolina. Others flew in from New York or California, even the Virgin Islands. One group of fans chartered a jet from Mobile, Ala. With scores of people turned away at the door, the 500 people crushed into the club begin shouting song titles before the music even starts. "The White Animals are baaaaaaack!" bellows one wild-eyed thirty something, who appears mainstream in his khaki shorts and docksiders - until you notice he reeks of patchouli oil and is dripping in silver-and-purple mardi gras beads, the ornament of choice for White Animals fans. Next to him, a mortgage banker named Scott Brown says he saw the White Animals play at least 20 times when he was an undergrad at the University of Tennessee. He wouldn't have missed this long-overdue reunion - he saw both the Friday and Saturday shows - for a residential closing on Mar-A-Lago. Lead singer Kevin Gray, a one-time medical student who dropped his stud ies in 1978 to work in the band fulltime, steps onto the stage and peers out into the audience, recognizing faces he hasn't seen in more than a decade. -

Hawkwind More Serious Now NME - 27 November 1971 Nik Turner: "When Silver Machine was a hit record, when we were getting success with big gigs, it was quite exciting... And then it stopped because our drummer was taking all his clothes off." Right now, Hawkwind (at Ewell Tech on Saturday and Hammersmith Town Hall on Thursday, Dec. 2) are probably more involved in their music than ever before. Said Nik Turner (alto sax): "Apart from our bass player, none of us had ever been in a group before. When we started it was just a loon. It was great just to be in a band. Now, after two years it doesn't seem to be a flash in the pan and we're taking the music more seriously. "Personally I'm surprised we've got so far., I never thought our music would appeal to anybody simply because we've never pandered to public taste never compromised and just played exactly what we wanted., By a happy accident people seem to be digging it... And the band has good reason to be satisfied with progress so far. A community band in the true sense of the word, Hawkwind have taken experimental music to its' outer limits and combined sound, colour and lights perhaps more effectively than any other band currently working in Britain. "Originally we just wanted to freak people out," said Dave Brock (guitar). "We used to portray different trips -you know, acid trips- and because of our own experiences knew exactly how to get through to people. Although we've got away from that, we still seem to freak people out. -

Page 4 of 299 Abstract With the re-emergence of social media in the 2000s and the increased worldwide usage of mobile devices, the impact of social media still cannot be ignored. From corporate businesses to popular culture, social media are now used in many sectors of society. Not least among these is the classical music industry. Artists and organisations have keenly capitalised on social media in the face of increasing budgetary reductions in the arts and long-held elitist perceptions of classical music. In addition, the classical music business has used social media to profit from economic growth, audiences, and public profiles, and to market accessibility, relevance, and value to a wider audience, notably, younger demographics and non-attenders. As a result, the classical music scene tries to engender technological determinism and digital optimism, ideologies reflecting discourses around Web 2.0/social media. Simultaneously, a so-called ‘digital divide’ is at risk. Various factors, for example, socioeconomic strata, greatly influence how classical music is marketed and branded on social media networks, however, they are barriers to access and enjoyment of the art, online and offline. -

Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

Plastic Crimewave Sound Review by Joe Milliken The Chicago-based Plastic Crimewave Sound is a band that is hard to describe. How about; a spaced out, nightmarish, psychedelic punk band. Of course that does not nearly begin to describe the scope of this band, but you get the idea. With the CD rerelease of No Wonderland, originally recorded as a concept, doublealbum on Eclipse Records and since out of print, the indie label Prophase offers this mind bending concoction of roaring psychedelic punk jams, heavy pulsating rhythms, sweeping minimalist soundscapes, fuzz tone, acoustic guitars and orchestral strings, all offset by some eerily poetic lyrics. An 18track concept piece, No Wonderland weaves in and out of all these different textures, taking the listener on a surreal, exploratory, almost frightening at times journey through this fuzz drenched, multifaceted rock sound. Imagine the Syd Barrett led Floyd submerging themselves into a modern, industrialized format. If it is hard to wrap your imagination around these descriptions, just imagine listening to the music. For this is not a collection of songs for the faint of heart or those looking to create some nice background music for a social gathering. No, Plastic Crimewave Sound is some serious music for a serious music fan, as this fivepiece, self proclaimed ³space punk² band rages through 70 minutes of stunning rock virtuosity reminiscent of classic 1970¹s prog rockers (the aforementioned) Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream and Pink Fairies. -

I was always impressed by Penny Rimbaud’s statement that the later Crass singles were issued as “tactical responses” to given situations. I started off writing and editing Fanzines, and it is only for reasons of my own that I decided to issue this magazine like Dear Friends, clockwork every Saturday, more recently every Friday. And so, what was planned to be an ordinary “ring in the old, ring out the new” (or is it But I think that the job of a magazine is a the other way round?) type issue has complex one, and I wouldn’t really like to completely gone out the window. Because clarify it into words, but it seems right that Lemmy dying has completely let the cat we document such an important event, amongst the cultural pigeons in a way that (which does appear to be lifechanging for one suspects the old bugger would have some people) into a special edition of Gonzo enjoyed. -
