Dasso became PERSONAL: the seventh coach of the Fighting Illini Born: Feb. 12, 1979 after a tremendous playing and coaching Hometown: Long Grove, Ill. career at the University of Notre Dame. Hired: June 13, 2006 In just five short years, Dasso has made EDUCATION: huge strides with the women’s tennis Notre Dame, 2001 program. Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration-Marketing The 2010-11 Illini boasted two All-Big COACHING EXPERIENCE: Ten honorees, including Rachael White 2006-Present: Head Coach, University of Illinois (first team) and Amy Allin (second team). 2003-06: Assistant Coach, University of Notre Dame The Illini struggled early on but managed to finish the year 11-13. PLAYING EXPERIENCE: 2001-03: USTA Professional Circuit In the previous season, the Illini were 1998-2001: University of Notre Dame rewarded with their first top-25 finish in the final Campbell’s/ITA rankings since 2004, after making their third straight NCAA tournament appearance. PLAYING ACCOLADES: The Orange and Blue finished 15-10 overall, including nine wins over nationally ITA National Senior Player of the Year (2001) Four-time ITA All-American (Singles and Doubles, 1999 and 2001) ranked opponents and placed third in the Big Ten with an 8-2 mark. Two-time Big East Championship Most Outstanding Player (2000-01) Four-time Team MVP (1998-2001) In addition to her Illinois coaching duties, Dasso also served as coach for the Winningest Player in Notre Dame history - Singles (140 wins) fourth annual Master’U BNP Paribas for the second straight year. The international Notre Dame Athletics Francis Patrick O’Connor Award winner (2001) competition features the top collegiate players from around the world. Working Notre Dame Gladys Heldman Award winner (2001) alongside Boise State head coach Greg Patton, the duo guided the U.S. to a first- place finish with a 4-3 victory over France. It was the first-ever championship for history. She grabbed the ITA’s National Senior Player of the Year accolade in 2001, the U.S. in only its second appearance in the tournament. and is the program’s only four-time All-American. Winning the title at each major in the same year is known as the “Grand Slam”. Three women have completed the singles Grand Slam in a calendar year: 1953 – Maureen Connolly; 1970 – Margaret Court; 1988 – Stefanie Graf. A further seven women have won each Grand Slam singles title at least once in their careers (known as the career Grand Slam): Doris Hart, Shirley Fry, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, with Navratilova (1983-84) and Williams (2002-03, 2014-15) holding all four titles at the same time. Jelena Jankovic and Daniela Hantuchova have both been busy mounting up victory and victory, and are anxious to add the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic title to their list of achievements when play gets underway at the Grand Hyatt Bali, Nusa Dua, in September. Jelena, who is returning to Bali for the first time since 2004 when she fell in the first round to Angelique Widjaja, has been the pace-setter this year. She currently leads the race for the Sony Ericsson Championships, where the top eight players for the year will gather in Madrid at the end of the season. Little more than a year ago the bubbly Serb was in despair and ready to retire from the game after a virus robbed her of the will to compete. She lost nine first round matches in a row, until things turned around for her in Rome where she reached the quarter-finals. This year could not have been in greater contrast. She began the season by winning the Auckland title, and reaching the Sydney final where she held match point before surrendering the closest of battles to Kim Clijsters. Later, she reached the semi-finals in Dubai before having to retire with an ankle injury, and the semi-finals in Doha before losing to eventual champion Justine Henin.

    Procedure for Conducting the Regional Tournament Draw Goals The regional tennis tournaments represent a one-of-a-kind experience for our student-athletes. As such, it is imperative that the draw be conducted in a manner that provides a fair opportunity to advance to the state tournament. The NCHSAA has given the following guidelines for conducting the draw. 1. That four players (or doubles teams) be seeded and placed in different quarters of the draw. 2. That players (or doubles teams) from the same school be placed in opposite halves of the draw, if possible. 3. That players (or doubles teams) from the same conference not meet in the first round of play, if possible. 4. That, after these conditions are satisfied, the draw be conducted in a random manner. Taken together, these guidelines insure that the players who have distinguished themselves during the season do not meet in the early rounds of the tournament, that teammates do not have to play each other until as late in the tournament as possible, that players get at least one opportunity to play someone new to them, and that the draw is conducted in a fair manner, giving all players no artificial advantage. The Problem However, implementing these goals is not an easy or straightforward task. If a 16-player draw is conducted in an entirely random fashion, there are over 81 billion unique combinations. Once the four seeded players are selected, there are still almost 30 million possible combinations of the remaining twelve players. If the conditions above are met in only 0.01% of these situations, that’s still about 3,000 potential solutions.
