Dear President Reagan:

It is my pleasure and privilege to invite yQJ.L..t_9_ -~p.eak to a plenary assembly of members of the American _Society gf_ _t\gro _I!_~IllY__ _{A.$1\.), and its sister societies, the cr"op .. Science ·.. Soc.iety of. America (CSSA), and the Soil .Science Society of Ame;rica . (SSSA), at 11: 00 a. m., Monday, . Nov~IIl~e-~_ .)_0_ 1_ _ 1.2~7 , __ in Atlanta, Georgia. We 9-J:~9~q_u~~t _t_hC!_t _you ~xtend~- - on .. our_ _J>ehal_f_.__a .n_ inyJ~!l tion to General Secretary Mikhail G?.rbachev of the U.S.S.R:~ -- _so share the podium with you on that occasion. We understand that General Secretary Gorbachev has identified himself as an agronomist in the past.

The American Society of Agronomy, with some 14,000 members, is the largest of the agricultural professional societies. It is made up of private sector, university, and government scientists and professionals engaged in all aspects of plant and soil science and technology. The interests of ASA mem bers are extremely diverse, ranging from basic to applied research and from production to utilization of crops. The members are researchers, teachers, extension specialists, administrators, managers, consultants, salespersons, and producers, tied together by their interest in the most basic of all eco nomic activities, the production and utilization of crops and crop products.

About 4,000 American Society of Agronomy members will be assembled in Atlanta for the annual meetings of the tri-societies. The theme of the 1987 meetings is "Agronomy--Serving a Competitive Agriculture." I hope you will see this is an opportunity to communicate your views on competitiveness and other matters to a very important group of your constituents, and to encourage Mr. Gorbachev to share with us nis perspective of the mutual agricultural interests of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.

I have several objectives in extending this invitation. Our members are genuinely interested in hearing, firsthand, your views and those of Mr. Gorbachev on agriculture and its relationship to other major national and international concerns. This will guide us as we plan, implement, and conduct agronomic research and development and related commercial activities in the future. Also, needless to say, your participation in our meetings will focus national and international a tte ntion on our socie ties and their activities and help educate the public about agronomy, in which all people have a very im portant stake. President Reagan - 2 July 28, 1987

We hope you will accept this invitation. We stand ready to help you achieve any goals you might wish to achieve by appearing either alone or with Mr. Gorbachev on our program.

Sincerely,

D. A. Holt President-Elect American Society of Agronomy

Dear Mr. President:

In 1963 President Kennedy visited California during my gover norship. He spent four days herey. dedicating two dams and making several speeches. It was a very successful trip. The highlight of the entire trip was a visit to Yosemite National Park. We flew in by helicopter from the military base adjacent to the City of Merced. I am absolutely confident, however, that during yot.ir··-Tast--Ewo·-y-ear·s ···-- in office you would very much like to make another contribution to a becter understanding with the Soviet Union. This visit to Yosemite would, in my opinion, add immeasurably to an understanding amongst the leaders of two great countries. I , of course, am giving no pub licity to this suggestion, and will give none. It would come from_ your office; and, possibly whe~ you write your book you could give me credit. But, until that time and unless released by you, I will say nothing further about this suggestion.

I would also like to suggest that, before you leave, you give a beginning to the Franklin D_~1~.DQ ___B oq,?~veJt.. .M.~morial. It is ··aver ____ _ forty years since -th:Cs ....great President died. I am a member of t_bis The President -2- March 25, 1987

General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev Staraya Plashchad'4 Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics 103132

Dear Mr. General Secretary:

I would like to extend an invitation to you to visit Apple Computer in Silicon Valley. We propose a tour of our automated Macintosh Factory which is one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the world for assembly of personal computers. It is in this factory that Macintosh Computers are used to control the robotic stations that assemble other Macintosh Computers.

At a time when attention is focused on technologies which threaten our very existence, personal computers offer a dramatic alternative future direction for high technology. Our vision for Apple is to expand people's potential by providing them with extraordinary tools for learning and personal productivity.

Personal computers are a technology largely created by a new generation and no company in the world better symbolizes the excitement of this new technology than Apple Computer. The average age of all of our employees worldwide is still only 29 years. Apple people are motivated by the vision to change the world by creating tools for individuals which in turn will help change how people work, learn, think and communicate. We are the leading computer in schools in the U.S. and have established broad acceptance by some of the most prestigious universities in the world with our Macintosh Computer. P::!ge 2.

Apple is a company which is different in many ways from the giant corporations of industrial America. We are known for our innovation, uncompromising high quality of our products and extremely high worker morale. It is on these strengths we have built a company which is successfully competing with some of the largest and most successful computer corporations in the world.

Our Apple workers would be extremely honored to have you and your party visit us in Silicon Valley. If such a visit is possible, we will of course need to comply with all requirements of our U.S. government. It is my hope that the U.S. government will look upon a visit by you to Apple with enthusiasm and pride at what a new generation of Americans are attempting to create for the world.

Best regards, ..., i ' 1 1 '
