    Roodstown Castle Adèle Commins and Daithí Kearney Roodstown Castle is a prominent feature of the built heritage of Co. Louth. Its excellent state of preservation gives it added stature and it provides an excellent example of a tower house in Ireland. National records provide an interesting account of the change of name of the townland of Roodstown since 1301. Over the years the following variants of the name existed: Rotheston (1301), Routheston (1305), Rotheston (1582), Roothstowne (1635), Roothtowne (1655), Roothestowne (1658), Roods towne (1659), Rootstowne (1664), Roodestowne (1666), Roodstowne (1667), Roothstowne (1670), Roothtown (1685), Rootstown (1777), Roodstown (1836). At this time it was noted that Rooth was a family name.1 The 1837 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland noted that the townland contained 25 houses at the time with 148 inhabitants and described it as a village.2 This dictionary also suggested that the townland was called Rootstown or Ruthstown. In the Barony of Ardee and Civil Parish of Stabannan, the townland of Roodstown is surrounded by a number of other townlands including Gudderstown, Rock, Broadlough, Drumcashel, Philibenstown and Irishtown. Roodstown Castle is the most prominent structure today in the townland. The castle overlooks the N33 and the River Dee and is an imposing feature in the landscape visible today from a number of surrounding roads including the N52 and N33. Roodstown Castle is positioned on the roadside at a junction. To the right of the castle is Ardee and to the left of the castle is Stabannan. In days gone by this was the main road from Ardee to Castlebellingham.

Geological history The imposing hills of the Cooley Peninsula, in the north-east of the county rise steeply above Dundalk Bay and overlook a more subdued landscape stretching across the rest of Co. Louth. The oldest rocks form a low range of hills just a few kilometres to the north-west of Drogheda, but they are poorly exposed. These Ordovician rocks, around 465 to 450 million years old, are dominated by volcanic lavas and ash falls erupted from volcanic islands and deposited on the ocean floor. Much of the low ground in the north of the county, between Dundalk and Ardee, is underlain by Silurian rocks, around 440 to 425 million years old. These were deposited on a deep ocean floor, where layers of slowly deposited dark mud were periodically interrupted by influxes of muddy sand avalanching down into the ocean basin from shallower water.     Ardee / Collon Parish Confirmation 2020 For the Celebration of the Rite of Confirmation 2020 the following will apply: 1. The Ceremony for the pupils of Monastery National School begins at 12 noon in the Church of the Nativity, Ardee on Saturday. July 25th 2020. Please allow yourself plenty of time for Ardee traffic, parking and getting a place to sit, while social distancing in the church. Master McAdam is unable to attend on the day as he has personal commitments but Master McGee and Mrs Higgins will be in attendance. 2. Entrance to the Church of the Nativity, Ardee via main entrance ONLY. Please use sanitisers. Due to the current restrictions on the number of people allowed in the church, Confirmation will have to be confined to two adults and the young person to be confirmed ONLY. That is three persons per family. ONE of the two adults will then act as SPONSOR. All other family members and friends can join in the Celebration of Confirmation 2020 via the Ardee-Collon Parish Webcam: https://mcnmedia.tv/camera/church-of-the-nativity-of-our-lady 3.     THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

    AREA PROFILE FOR TOWN ARDEE LEGAL TOWN AND ITS ENVIRONS CO. LOUTH AGE/SEX In April 2011 Ardee had a population of 4,927, consisting of 2,438 males and 2,489 females. The population of pre-school age (0-4) was 394, of primary school going age (5-12) was 489 and of secondary school going age (13-18) was 378. There were 668 persons aged 65 years and over. The number of persons aged 18 years or over was 3,742. MARITAL STATUS Of the 3,918 persons aged 15 years and over, 1,668 were single, 1,704 were married, 157 were separated, 127 were divorced and 262 were widowed. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS There were 1,855 private households in Ardee in April 2011, of which 488 were single person households. Of the 1,287 families in the area, 360 were couples with no children. The average number of children per family was 1.3 compared with 1.4 nationally. The objective of carrying out the review is to capture the learning from the stakeholders involved so that other towns following the initiative can learn from the successes and challenges experienced in making Ardee the first Age-Friendly Town in Ireland. Background The Louth Age-Friendly County Initiative was launched in Nov 2008 and is based on the World Health Organisation’s criteria of the establishment of a governance group, the Louth Age-Friendly Alliance, the structured inclusion of the voice of the service users - older people and the development of a strategic plan. The Louth Age-Friendly Strategy has two actions in relation to planning: • “The County Council will develop its own Principles for Age-friendly Planning based on the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities guidelines; • These principles will be incorporated into the County Development Plan; • The Council will begin reviewing all planning applications to check their adherence to these principles; • At a later stage, the Council will work with the Department of the Environment to develop technical guidelines which will be communicated to planners, architects and developers” Louth Age-Friendly County Strategy: Page 9 www.louthagefriendlycounty.ie (Downloads) 1 2 The Louth Older People’s Forum was set up to represent the voice of older people in the decision making processes affecting them.

Coming from the North Side on the M1 leave the Ballymac roundabout heading to Dundalk town centre. Drive straight through the next round about for 1.5km passing the race course on your left and go over the bridge passing the docks on your left. At the first set of traffic lights turn left, and take the immediate right turn and you will see the red brick building straight ahead where the clinic is located Louth Physio Clinic. There is free on street parking in the surrounding area. Coming from the South Side on the M1 take the 3rd Exit and head to Dundalk straight through the roundabout and the traffic lights at Xerox. Continue straight for 2km through the next two roundabouts and at national tile turn right and follow the road to the bottom turning left at the T junction. It is sign posted from here on but go straight for 800m before turning left and you will see the red brick building straight ahead where the clinic is located Louth Physio Clinic.
