Ardee / Collon Parish Confirmation 2020 For the Celebration of the Rite of Confirmation 2020 the following will apply: 1. The Ceremony for the pupils of Monastery National School begins at 12 noon in the Church of the Nativity, Ardee on Saturday. July 25th 2020. Please allow yourself plenty of time for Ardee traffic, parking and getting a place to sit, while social distancing in the church. Master McAdam is unable to attend on the day as he has personal commitments but Master McGee and Mrs Higgins will be in attendance. 2. Entrance to the Church of the Nativity, Ardee via main entrance ONLY. Please use sanitisers. Due to the current restrictions on the number of people allowed in the church, Confirmation will have to be confined to two adults and the young person to be confirmed ONLY. That is three persons per family. ONE of the two adults will then act as SPONSOR. All other family members and friends can join in the Celebration of Confirmation 2020 via the Ardee-Collon Parish Webcam: https://mcnmedia.tv/camera/church-of-the-nativity-of-our-lady 3. Inside the Church social distance will be observed in the seating arrangements and during the ceremony. It is recommended that the two adults attending Confirmation wear face covering. 4. Readings and the Prayers of the Faithful will be read by nominated pupils from a free standing microphone at the front of the Altar steps and each reader will observe social distance. 5. The Confirmandi and Sponsor will come forward to the Celebrant at the front of the Altar one at a time. The Sponsor will then present the child for Confirmation. Sponsor: Canon Murphy, I present N. for Confirmation. Canon Murphy: N., what Confirmation name have you taken? Child: (Tells Celebrant chosen Name) Canon Murphy: N. Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Child: Amen. Canon Murphy: Peace be with you. Child: And with your Spirit. No handshake will be exchanged. Simply bow to each other and return to your seat. 6. At the end of the ceremony exit from the Church via John Street and Drogheda Road doors ONLY continuing to observe social distancing. 7. Outside the Church please keep social distance also. We wish all the blessings of the Holy Spirit on each one of our 32 pupils receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday next. We hope you have a lovely day as you gather together as the class of 2020 for the final time. On the day we ask you to follow the lead from Canon Murphy, particularly during the Rite of Confirmation. We thank Father O’ Leary, Father Slater and all our Priests, teachers and parents who have led and guided the children to this very special day in their lives. Roodstown Castle Adèle Commins and Daithí Kearney Roodstown Castle is a prominent feature of the built heritage of Co. Louth. Its excellent state of preservation gives it added stature and it provides an excellent example of a tower house in Ireland. National records provide an interesting account of the change of name of the townland of Roodstown since 1301. Over the years the following variants of the name existed: Rotheston (1301), Routheston (1305), Rotheston (1582), Roothstowne (1635), Roothtowne (1655), Roothestowne (1658), Roods towne (1659), Rootstowne (1664), Roodestowne (1666), Roodstowne (1667), Roothstowne (1670), Roothtown (1685), Rootstown (1777), Roodstown (1836). At this time it was noted that Rooth was a family name.1 The 1837 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland noted that the townland contained 25 houses at the time with 148 inhabitants and described it as a village.2 This dictionary also suggested that the townland was called Rootstown or Ruthstown. In the Barony of Ardee and Civil Parish of Stabannan, the townland of Roodstown is surrounded by a number of other townlands including Gudderstown, Rock, Broadlough, Drumcashel, Philibenstown and Irishtown. Roodstown Castle is the most prominent structure today in the townland. The castle overlooks the N33 and the River Dee and is an imposing feature in the landscape visible today from a number of surrounding roads including the N52 and N33. Roodstown Castle is positioned on the roadside at a junction. To the right of the castle is Ardee and to the left of the castle is Stabannan. In days gone by this was the main road from Ardee to Castlebellingham.

Geological history The imposing hills of the Cooley Peninsula, in the north-east of the county rise steeply above Dundalk Bay and overlook a more subdued landscape stretching across the rest of Co. Louth. The oldest rocks form a low range of hills just a few kilometres to the north-west of Drogheda, but they are poorly exposed. These Ordovician rocks, around 465 to 450 million years old, are dominated by volcanic lavas and ash falls erupted from volcanic islands and deposited on the ocean floor. Much of the low ground in the north of the county, between Dundalk and Ardee, is underlain by Silurian rocks, around 440 to 425 million years old. These were deposited on a deep ocean floor, where layers of slowly deposited dark mud were periodically interrupted by influxes of muddy sand avalanching down into the ocean basin from shallower water. THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.
