confusing, which is why in 1950 Congress made the official name to this holiday Presidents’ President’s Day Day, to celebrate all the president’s not just Washington and Lincoln. However, Americans did not accept it because they did not think all the presidents deserved recognition. Things changed Monday, February 16th in 1971 when the government declared the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create No School more 3-day weekends for the nation’s workers and Presidents’ Day was moved to February. Valentine’s Day Massacre—That Which Occurred in ‘29 February 14, 1929, five members of the North Side Gang, plus gang collaborators Reinhardt H. Schwimmer and John May, were lined up against the rear inside wall of the garage at 2122 North Clark Street, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago's North Side, and executed. Two of the shooters were dressed as uniformed police officers, while the others wore suits, ties, overcoats and hats, according to witnesses who saw the "police" leading the other men at gunpoint out of the garage after the shooting. This shooting became known as the “Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre,” due to its date. This was a metaphorical message sent by notorious crime boss, Al Capone, to rival gangster Bugs Moran. Capone was boss of the South Side Italian Gang, and Moran was boss of the rival North Side Irish Gang. -Aaron Troknya

Wars have been fought, riots have erupted, and people have died due to the ever-growing controversies concerning the baffling concept of love. Many also debate whether or not love is uncon- ditional, which entitles everyone the right to be loved, no matter who they are, or their background. Some races and religions be- lieve other races and religions are not worthy of love. Some people deny love and compassion to criminals, because of their mis- takes. There are so many different theories and opinions regarding love. There is not one sole meaning for love, love is defined by one’s personal beliefs and values, but should be unconditional. Many people cannot find the strength within themselves’ to love their self or others, but that does not mean they do not deserve to be loved. Love is not only shared by lovers and families, it can take many forms. Love could be a bond between an animal and its owner, or the light breeze drifting in the moonlight. Love can be passion, but not only the heart-throbbing, eager, and spellbinding kisses exchanged by star-crossed lovers, in romance novels. Passion can be a cause or ideal someone is willing to fight for or a sport or activity someone enjoys. Love is not fully understood; but it is not meant to be understood. Love is something bigger and better than ourselves; it is a force stronger than gravity. Love will never be comprehended, but also never questioned about its cunning power to influence lives. That is why people yearn for it as they do, it is an explicable experience that cannot be bought or packaged. It is a connection between the heart and soul that is impossible to mimic. Some people wait years for love to find them, and then give up hope that they will ever experience it. Others have lost love, and fear that its glistening spark will never return to their hearts again. This is not always true, love has a way of drifting with the wind, or following the riptide, it can end up any where sudden and abruptly. Even if it only stays for a short while, its impact on a person is endless. Love is more than cards and candy, more than a relationship, more than a feeling; love is an energy that will light lives for generations. -Staff Writer

St.Valentine For many centuries now, February 14th has been celebrated around the world as the day for romance, and this year will be no dif- ferent. But where did this holiday originate from? Well, it started with a man named St. Valentine. St. Valentine was a Roman holy priest, widely recognized for his martyrdom during the third century, when the Catholic Church was being persecuted by an emperor named Claudius the Second. Claudius outlawed the marriage of young people because he believed that young, unmarried soldiers fought better because they wouldn’t worry about the lives of their wives if they died in battle. St.Valentine, a Catholic, fought for the right for young people to be married, and in secrecy, he married people and soon after he was caught, imprisoned, and tortured for performing marriages. In jail, Valentine was said to have helped a Roman man named Aste- rius, whose daughter was born blind. Valentine was said to have helped heal the girl by praying for her condition to get better, and Asterius was convinced that Valentine’s praying had worked, so he converted to Catholicism. On February 14th, 269 AD. St. Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution, where he was beaten, stoned and decapitated because of being a Catholic. In a letter to Asterius’ daughter before his execution, Valentine signed it, “From your Valentine.” A popular phrase still used today. St.Valentine is widely known as the patron saint of lovers, happy marriage, young people and love. He was commemorated on February 14th. To- day, St. Valentine is widely known for his help marrying lovers, and that is why on February 14th, we celebrate Valentine’s Day. There is also another idea of the origin of Valentine’s Day; it is called A Pagan Festival in February, and celebrated on February 15th. It was a fertility festival called Lupercalia dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. The festival of Lupercalia was then noticed as “un-Christian” at the end of the 5th century. It wasn’t until much lat- er that Valentine’s Day was recognized as a day for “love.” This was associated with the idea that the bird mating season started in mid-February. Although writing and giving out Valentine’s Day cards didn’t start until the 1400’s, the first Valentine ever recorded was in 1415 by Charles, the Duke of Orleans. No matter how Valentine’s Day began, it is now celebrated by the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, and of course the United States. February 14th was, is, and will forever be known as the day for romance. -Cat Towell

St. Valentine’s Day Around the World

Italy Originally, Italians celebrated Valentine’s Day as the Spring Festival. People gather outside in gardens and cafes to enjoy poetry readings and music before taking a stroll with their loved ones. Now a days on Valentine’s Day Italians prefer having romantic din- ners and exchanging gifts. Also, there is a tradition of giving chocolate to loved ones and Italians believe that in this case, size does matter - the bigger the chocolate, the stronger the love you will have.

France The French like to think of themselves as the most romantic people in the world, and it is often claimed that the first Valentine’s Day card originated in France when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent letter to the love of his life while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Today card giving is not as popular as it used to be. Instead, the French love their own food, restaurants do really well on Feb- ruary 14, a day also considered the best time for a marriage proposal.

Finland and Estonia Valentine’s Day celebrations in Estonia/Finland have their own way of celebrating it. February 14 is called “Friend’s Day,” so single people do not feel left out. That means everyone is a winner thanks to nice presents given between friends and family members. That does not mean there is no romance: shops, restaurants and even streets are decorated with hearts and other symbols of love. On this day single people also get the chance to take a ride on a special “love bus” where they can meet others looking for love.

United States In the United States, Valentine’s Day is a major card- and gift-giving festival. This day is not a public holiday here. Offices, schools, stores and organizations are open as usual. Markets can be seen wearing a festive look and loaded with gifts to lure customers, days before the actual day arrives. Cards have been exchanged in the USA since the early 1700s. Americans have recognized black history since 1926. Originally it was known as “Negro History Week’ and later changed to “Black History Month.” This tradition started almost before any black history had been studied, or even documented. Afri- can Americans have been in America since colonial times but it was not until the 20th century that a respectable presence was found in the history books. We owe the study of black history to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. His ancestral past was former slaves, and his childhood was spent in the Kentucky coal mines. He did not enroll in high school until age twenty, graduated in two years, and then received a Ph.D. from Harvard. Dr. Woodson was disturbed to find in his studies that history books for the most part ignored black American figures throughout history. He wanted that to change. Dr. Woodson wanted all Americans to know the contributions that were made by black Americans. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, he founded the journal of Negro History, and in 1926 he launched the Negro History Week to bring national attention to the contribution of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose February because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population. These men are Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, February has much more to show for its significance of black American history. Events such as: - February 23, 1868 – W.E.B. Dubois, civil rights leader and co-founder of the NAACP was born; - February 3, 1870 – The 15th Amendment was passed granting blacks the right to vote; - February 25, 1870 – the first black US Senator, Hiram R. Revels, took the oath of office; - February 12, 1909 – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored people (NAACP) was founded by a group of con- cerned black and white citizens in New York City; - February 1, 1960 – A civil rights movement milestone when a group of black N.C. college students began a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter; and - February 21, 1965 – Malcolm X, the militant leader who promoted Black Nationalism was shot to death by three Black Muslims. From colonial times to the civil rights movement, many fell victim to racism and lost their lives to guarantee a better life for future generations- for our generation. We cannot allow ourselves to let all that suffering be for nothing; we choose to remember the month of February as black history month and celebrate the freedoms that everyone can now enjoy thanks to the courage of the heroic lead- ers of present and past generations. -Staff Writer

HEARTS AND FLOWERS During Valentine’s Day, you usually get the gift of candy or flowers. The tradition of receiving candy started in elementary school when your friends would give out Valentine’s Day cards along with candy. The candy consists of “I LUV YOU, KISS ME, U R SO CUTE, and MARRY ME.” These candies are known as candy hearts. Candy heart making developed into an industry during the nineteenth century through the discovery of sugar beaches and the advances of mechanical appliances. Nothing melts a heart like chocolates on the 14th. Whether your other half likes milk chocolates, dark chocolates, nutty chocolates, or chocolate truffles, these Valentine’s Day sweet treats send a message of love. While Valentine’s Day chocolates may not last long, the loving gesture and memory of the giver's thoughtfulness will. The reason why we give out chocolate on Valentine’s Day is because chocolate has been associated with passion, romance and love since the time of the Aztecs. They believed that chocolate was a source of spiritual wisdom, incredible energy, and elevated sexual power. It was widely used at wedding ceremonies and today our chocolate is very different from theirs. The flowers consist of a big bouquet or a single flower. Roses are the most popular flower that you would get from your sweetie. A red rose means love, a white rose signifies worthiness, a yellow rose means friendship and a pink rose means happiness. The flow- ers also symbolize fertility, love, marriage and romance. The gift of flowers happened in the middle ages when marriage was severely prohibited. Lovers communicated for weeks and months through the gifting of flowers. Some believe that Valentine’s Day and the treats that go with it are just another “Hallmark” holiday. Yet others see it as a chance to start new relationships, rekindle old relationships, and to express their love for each other. Valentine’s Day is known as a day to celebrate love, be it with a significant other or even just the friends you have come to enjoy having, but it can also be a big source of stress. Here are some possible stressers to avoid:

1. People in relationships often worry about what to get their significant other for Valentine’s Day, especially if it is last minute and they have absolutely no money to spend.

2. Husbands might also be left scratching their heads when their wives say “No, we do not have to do anything.” wondering if it is likely a trap instead of an honest nonchalant attitude.

3. People who plan to cook for Valentine’s Day could very well find themselves panicking over the recipe or struggling to make it to their exact standards, and then praying that their significant other will enjoy it when the time comes.

4. Singles may either be rushing to find that certain someone or just not caring at all. Either way, more candy for them.

5. Stress can also come if certain expectations have failed to be met or even from disappointment on how the day turned out.

6. Another source of possible stress could be from trying to find reservations for that fancy restaurant you have had your eye on, only to find that it is packed and there is absolutely no way possible to treat your boyfriend/girlfriend to a romantic dinner.

7. Making plans that cost a lot of money, only to be dumped and have everything go to waste.

8. And of course there is the possible stress of everything going wrong, plans being wrecked, and potentially disgusting objects being dumped all over your significant other and ruining everything. Anxiety could strike at any moment should any minor thing go awry or something devious appears to muck up the entire day.

An easy way of coping with this stress is simple: just relax and enjoy the time spent with the people you care about. And treat yourself to ice cream. Ice cream always helps. - Jacob Klump

It’s around that time, Glen Este – time to start thinking about next year. Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors, we are going to start scheduling soon, so start thinking about what you might want to take. Scheduling is estimated to start by mid-March.

Post-secondary students and/or future post-secondary students, your forms for registration are due by March 30. Don’t be late or you will not be able to get in to the program or UC Clermont. There is also an information meeting on February 26 at 6:30 in the PAC, if you or your parents need questions answered or want something cleared up.

Seniors, hopefully you have turned in at least most of your college applications by now. If you haven’t, though, there’s still time. A lot of local colleges around Cincinnati have rolling admissions, which means that they’ll accept applications at any time. It’s still better to apply earlier, though, because they look at those first. Colleges with rolling admission will accept until they have a full class. So, do your research and make sure you know when your college’s deadlines are. -Staff

We all wonder why we get so nervous before we present in a class, or think about what class will help me prepare for college or the future, or even what would make me not be afraid to speak in front of a lot of people. The an- swer is simple. Practice makes perfect.

The time is coming for scheduling to begin again. The class options are numerous and it can be hard to choose what course is right for you. The best advice for picking any class is to choose one that will most benefit you. At Glen Este one of the most beneficial classes offered is also one of the most disrespected. Speech class has a bad reputation, after all, few people actu- ally like public speaking, but can actually be very educational and help de- velop important life skills.

Taking a speech class can help develop communication skills which can make working with other people much easier. Kings and Queens of the Lanes It’s been a tale of two seasons this year for the Glen Este bowling teams. The Lady Trojans are off to a hot start this year with an outstanding record of 15-0 overall and 11-0 in league play. The boys are off to a rough start though on the other hand, going 8-8 overall and 6-5 in league play. Leading the way for the Lady Trojans is freshman Danielle Cooper, leading the league with an average of 190.2 a match and a high score of 256. Some experts have compared her to Glen Este legend, Leslie Campbell. Danielle does not feel pressure though because she says, “once I start bowling, I just bowl.” Other key contributors for the Lady Trojans are Courtney Chaffin, Drew Coutler, Emily Doppes, and Becca Rainwater. Leading the way for the Trojans is junior Brady Dunigan, being third in the league with a 206 average and a high score of 278. Brady feels that continuous practice and learning different strategies is a key to improving. The most difficult thing to adapt to is the different oil conditions of the lanes. Other team members are Tanner Davis, Cole Hunley, Evan Dennis, and Jacob Klump. The men only have three matches left in the season and the ladies still have four left to complete. -Austin Feltner & Zach Jones

SUPER DEPRESSING ADS Even if you are not a football fan you are likely to watch the an- nual Super Bowl for the commercials. The cost of a half-minute of air-time was $4.5 million this year, so companies need to make a memorable ad. Opting usually for a funny or cute commercial, the advertisements this year took a dark, thought-provoking turn to depression town.

The notorious depressing ad was Nationwide’s first ad, which ran during the first half. A young kid is the star of the commercial where he spends the entire time talking about life experiences, such as flying and getting married, that he cannot experience be- cause, “I died.” Nationwide issued the following statement about the ad: Preventable injuries around the home are the leading cause of childhood deaths in America. Most people don't know that. The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance.

The NFL also showed a new ad from their “No More” campaign against domestic violence. It features a 911 call of a woman that cannot tell the operator that she is in a domestic violence situation. Instead of telling the officer she is in trouble, she pretends to order the pizza. The commercial ends with the phrase, “When its hard to talk, it’s up to us to listen.” This adds fire to the ongoing conversa- tion of domestic violence and the way women are treated.

The reason for the sad ads does not matter because people are talking about them. It provokes us as a society to take a step back and look at a much larger picture. Are we really where we need to be as a whole? - Zach Jeschke
