WP 1807 – April 2018 Embezzlement and Guilt Aversion Giuseppe Attanasi, Claire Rimbaud, Marie Claire Villeval Abstract: Donors usually need intermediaries to transfer their donations to recipients. A risk is that donations can be embezzled before they reach the recipients. Using psychological game theory, we design a novel three- player Embezzlement Mini-Game to study whether intermediaries suffer from guilt aversion and whether guilt aversion toward the recipient is stronger than toward the donor. Testing the predictions of the model in a laboratory experiment, we show that the proportion of guilt-averse intermediaries is the same irrespective of the direction of the guilt. However, structural estimates indicate that the effect of guilt on behaviour is higher when the guilt is directed toward the recipient. 1 Sequential Games We call games where players take turns moving “sequential games”. Sequential games consist of the same elements as normal form games –there are players, rules, outcomes, and payo¤s. However, sequential games have the added element that history of play is now important as players can make decisions conditional on what other players have done. Thus, if two people are playing a game of Chess the second mover is able to observe the …rst mover’s initial move prior to making his initial move. While it is possible to represent sequential games using the strategic (or matrix) form representation of the game it is more instructive at …rst to represent sequential games using a game tree. In addition to the players, actions, outcomes, and payo¤s, the game tree will provide a history of play or a path of play. A very basic example of a sequential game is the Entrant-Incumbent game. The game is described as follows: Consider a game where there is an entrant and an incumbent. The entrant moves …rst and the incumbent observes the entrant’sdecision. The entrant can choose to either enter the market or remain out of the market. If the entrant remains out of the market then the game ends and the entrant receives a payo¤ of 0 while the incumbent receives a payo¤ of 2. If the entrant chooses to enter the market then the incumbent gets to make a choice. The incumbent chooses between …ghting entry or accommodating entry. If the incumbent …ghts the entrant receives a payo¤ of 3 while the incumbent receives a payo¤ of 1. -

Wszolek, B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Brian Pollins, Adviser Daniel Verdier Adviser Randall Schweller Graduate Program in Political Science ABSTRACT The assertion that clear signaling prevents unnecessary war drives much of the recent developments in research on international crises signaling, so much so that this work has aimed at identifying types of clear signals. But if clear signals are the only mechanism for preventing war, as the signaling literature claims, an important puzzle remains — why are signals that combine both carrot and stick components sent and why are signals that are partial or ambiguous sent. While these signals would seemingly work at cross-purposes undermining the signaler’s goals, actually, we observe them frequently in crises that not only end short of war but also that realize the signaler’s goals. Through a game theoretic model, this dissertation theorizes that because these alternatives to clear signals increase the attractiveness, and therefore the likelihood, of compliance they are a more cost-effective way to show resolve and avoid unnecessary conflict than clear signals. In addition to building a game theoretic model, an additional contribution of this thesis is to develop a method for observing mixed versus clear signaling strategies and use this method to test the linkage between signaling and crisis outcomes. Results of statistical analyses support theoretical expectations: clear signaling strategies might not always be the most effective way to secure peace, while mixed signaling strategies can be an effective deterrent. -

Notes on sequential and repeated games 1 Sequential Move Games Thus far we have examined games in which players make moves simultaneously (or without observing what the other player has done). Using the normal (strategic) form representation of a game we can identify sets of strategies that are best responses to each other (Nash Equilibria). We now focus on sequential games of complete information. We can still use the normal form representation to identify NE but sequential games are richer than that because some players observe other players’decisions before they take action. The fact that some actions are observable may cause some NE of the normal form representation to be inconsistent with what one might think a player would do. Here’sa simple game between an Entrant and an Incumbent. The Entrant moves …rst and the Incumbent observes the Entrant’s action and then gets to make a choice. The Entrant has to decide whether or not he will enter a market or not. Thus, the Entrant’s two strategies are “Enter” or “Stay Out”. If the Entrant chooses “Stay Out” then the game ends. The payo¤s for the Entrant and Incumbent will be 0 and 2 respectively. If the Entrant chooses “Enter” then the Incumbent gets to choose whether or not he will “Fight”or “Accommodate”entry. If the Incumbent chooses “Fight”then the Entrant receives 3 and the Incumbent receives 1. If the Incumbent chooses “Accommodate”then the Entrant receives 2 and the Incumbent receives 1. Vincent3 1Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada, 2Department of Biological Sciences, University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois, USA and 3Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA ABSTRACT Question: How are the three main stability concepts from evolutionary game theory – evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), convergence stability, and neighbourhood invader strategy (NIS) – related to each other? Do they form a basis for the many other definitions proposed in the literature? Mathematical methods: Ecological and evolutionary dynamics of population sizes and heritable strategies respectively, and adaptive and NIS landscapes. Results: Only six of the eight combinations of ESS, convergence stability, and NIS are possible. An ESS that is NIS must also be convergence stable; and a non-ESS, non-NIS cannot be convergence stable. A simple example shows how a single model can easily generate solutions with all six combinations of stability properties and explains in part the proliferation of jargon, terminology, and apparent complexity that has appeared in the literature. A tabulation of most of the evolutionary stability acronyms, definitions, and terminologies is provided for comparison. Key conclusions: The tabulated list of definitions related to evolutionary stability are variants or combinations of the three main stability concepts. Recent Advances in Understanding Competitive Markets Chris Shannon Department of Economics University of California, Berkeley March 4, 2002 1 Introduction The Arrow-Debreu model of competitive markets has proven to be a remark- ably rich and °exible foundation for studying an array of important economic problems, ranging from social security reform to the determinants of long-run growth. Central to the study of such questions are many of the extensions and modi¯cations of the classic Arrow-Debreu framework that have been ad- vanced over the last 40 years. These include dynamic models of exchange over time, as in overlapping generations or continuous time, and under un- certainty, as in incomplete ¯nancial markets. Many of the most interesting and important recent advances have been spurred by questions about the role of markets in allocating resources and providing opportunities for risk- sharing arising in ¯nance and macroeconomics. This article is intended to give an overview of some of these more recent developments in theoretical work involving competitive markets, and highlight some promising areas for future work. I focus on three broad topics. The ¯rst is the role of asymmetric informa- tion in competitive markets. Classic work in information economics suggests that competitive markets break down in the face of informational asymme- 0 tries. Recently these issues have been reinvestigated from the vantage point of more general models of the market structure, resulting in some surpris- ing results overturning these conclusions and clarifying the conditions under which perfectly competitive markets can incorporate informational asymme- tries. The second concentrates on the testable implications of competitive markets. -

The logic of costly punishment reversed: expropriation of free-riders and outsiders∗ ,† David Hugh-Jones Carlo Perroni University of East Anglia University of Warwick and CAGE January 5, 2017 Abstract Current literature views the punishment of free-riders as an under-supplied pub- lic good, carried out by individuals at a cost to themselves. It need not be so: often, free-riders’ property can be forcibly appropriated by a coordinated group. This power makes punishment profitable, but it can also be abused. It is easier to contain abuses, and focus group punishment on free-riders, in societies where coordinated expropriation is harder. Our theory explains why public goods are un- dersupplied in heterogenous communities: because groups target minorities instead of free-riders. In our laboratory experiment, outcomes were more efficient when coordination was more difficult, while outgroup members were targeted more than ingroup members, and reacted differently to punishment. DRAFT PROPOSITIONAL CONTENT in SIGNALS (for Special Issue Studies in the History and Philosophy of Science C ) Brian Skyrms and Jeffrey A. Barrett Introduction We all think that humans are animals, that human language is a sophisticated form of animal signaling, and that it arises spontaneously due to natural processes. From a naturalistic perspective, what is fundamental is what is common to signaling throughout the biological world -- the transfer of information. As Fred Dretske put it in 1981, "In the beginning was information, the word came later." There is a practice of signaling with information transfer that settles into some sort of a pattern, and eventually what we call meaning or propositional content crystallizes out. The place to start is to study the evolution, biological or cultural, of information transfer in its most simple and tractable forms. But once this is done, naturalists need first to move to evolution of more complex forms of information transfer. And then to an account of the crystallization process that gives us meaning. There often two kinds of information in the same signal: (1) information about the state of the world that the signaler observes (2) information about the act that the receiver will perform on receiving the signal. [See Millikan (1984), Harms (2004), Skyrms (2010)]. The meaning that crystalizes out about the states, we will single out here as propositional meaning. The simplest account that comes to mind will not quite do, as a general account of this kind of meaning, although it may be close to the mark in especially favorable situations. -

Recency, Records and Recaps: Learning and Non-equilibrium Behavior in a Simple Decision Problem* DREW FUDENBERG, Harvard University ALEXANDER PEYSAKHOVICH, Facebook Nash equilibrium takes optimization as a primitive, but suboptimal behavior can persist in simple stochastic decision problems. This has motivated the development of other equilibrium concepts such as cursed equilibrium and behavioral equilibrium. We experimentally study a simple adverse selection (or “lemons”) problem and find that learning models that heavily discount past information (i.e. display recency bias) explain patterns of behavior better than Nash, cursed or behavioral equilibrium. Providing counterfactual information or a record of past outcomes does little to aid convergence to optimal strategies, but providing sample averages (“recaps”) gets individuals most of the way to optimality. Thus recency effects are not solely due to limited memory but stem from some other form of cognitive constraints. Our results show the importance of going beyond static optimization and incorporating features of human learning into economic models.
