Collection Description Biographical Note James Mills Thoburn, born March 7, 1836 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, was the son of Irish immigrants. In 1850, a year after the death of his father, Thoburn enrolled in Allegheny College. Emory Libraries provides copies of its finding aids for use only in research and private study. Copies supplied may not be copied for others or otherwise distributed without prior consent of the holding repository. James Mills Thoburn Papers, 1910-1922 Manuscript Collection No. 112 He graduated in 1857. He joined the Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was ordained in 1858. Thoburn became a missionary to India in 1859. He helped start and was the first editor of "The Indian Witness." In 1888, Thoburn was elected Missionary Bishop for India by the General Conference. He remained in office until 1908. He died in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on November 28, 1922. Among Thoburn's writings are: My Missionary Apprentice, 1886; The Deaconess and her Vocation, 1893; Christless Nations, 1894; The Church of Pentecost, 1899; Life of Isabella Thoburn, 1903; The Christian Conquest of India, 1906; India and Southern Asia, 1907; God's Heroes Our Examples, 1914. Scope and Content Note The collection contains one book, two letters, and two photographs. The book is a copy of Thoburn in India autographed by Thoburn for his cousin, Mrs. Hester C. Pattillo. The book contained a letter from Thoburn to Mrs. Pattillo dated April 1, 1910 and a newspaper clipping describing the fiftieth anniversary of Thoburn's sailing for India. The second letter, dated September 11, 1947 is from Isabella Thoburn, grandaughter of Bishop Thoburn, to Mrs. Pattillo. One photograph is of the residence in Meadville, Pennsylvania that was given to Thoburn by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a part of the fiftieth anniversary celebration. Another is of Bishop Thoburn.     PPrroommpptteedd bbyy aa FFeeaatthheerr James Mills Thoburn (1836 – 1922) was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church best known for his missionary work in India. Born in St. Clairsville, Ohio, he graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Penn., in 1857 and began his Methodist preaching ministry that same year in the Pittsburgh Conference. Thoburn went to India as a missionary in 1859 and was stationed successively at Nynee Tal, Moradabad, Lucknow and Calcutta, where he founded Calcutta Boys' School in 1877. Preaching in both the native and European languages, he built the largest church in India at that time. Bishop Thoburn was walking down the street one day when a large eagle feather drifted to the ground near him. He searched the sky for the eagle, but saw nothing. Turning the feather over in his hands, he recalled that pens made out of such feathers had written many historic documents. He carefully took a sharp knife and sliced it across the heavy end of the feather. It wrote so beautifully that he decided to write a letter to his sister, Isabella Thoburn, in Boston. He wrote how the girls and women of India were mistreated and neglected, and that he felt God desired that something be done about it. Then he added, “You are a school teacher. Although you are excellent, there are thousands of others in America who could take your place. Why don’t you come over here and start a school for the girls and women who come to my compound to church?” His sister read the letter to the Women’s Missionary Society of the church.
