Architectonics of Game Spaces Architecture | Volume 50 Andri Gerber (PhD), born in 1974, is Professor for the History of Urban Design at the ZHAW in Winterthur. He is an expert of metaphors in the context of ar- chitecture and urban design. His research interests turn around the concept of space, from a phenomenological, a political and more recently from a cognitive perspective. Ulrich Götz, born in 1971, is Professor at the ZHdK Zurich University of the Arts, heading the ZHdK Subject Area in Game Design. Trained as an architect, he discusses comparable strategies of spatial design in architecture and game spaces. He has built up extensive experience in research and development of serious and applied games. In this story, a poor, sick boy is visited by an angel on Christmas Eve. The angel leads the boy away from his home, into a room with a small box full of wooden building blocks. Reinhold takes the blocks out of the box; after stacking them with the church in the center of his city, the blocks began to grow until they surrounded him—toy buildings that became “real.” In this fantastic city, Reinhold encounters a series of strange and unusual inhabitants, including a king who introduces the boy to his subjects. Hoffmann was psychiatrist and children’s author, and the creator of the famous character of Struwwelpeter. 10 Andri Gerber and Ulrich Götz morning, he discovers a wonderful Christmas tree, alongside the toys he had played with the night before. Play opens the door to fantasy and illusion. The etymology of “illusion” originates from the Latin in-ludere, referring to “play”. Games demand illusion: we either play with the image of a game in our minds—like the German expression Gedankenspiel—or by literally jumping into the game. While at first, the Heinrich Hoffmann example may seem off-topic, it il- lustrates the agenda of this book: It reminds us that play, in fact, has a long history, and by playing, we are transported into the world of games. This world is always related to our everyday reality—and yet it is of another dimension, in which a different set of rules, perhaps better or fewer ones, take control. Ar- chitecture is a complex discipline, yet also one of the most “solid” disci- plines ever, as its results manifest themselves in bricks and mortar. At the same time, architecture has always been plagued by contradictions and crises—the resulting instability of it all is a wonderful paradox indeed. Be- cause of this fundamental condition, architecture has always been open to external discourses, embracing new directions and definitions in search of its own nature—as it has never been able to answer this central ques- Introduction 11 tion on its own. Since architecture primarily expresses itself in the form of spatial structures, it has always had to share concepts of “space” with relat- ed interpretations from other disciplines, and in a complex entanglement with society. From movies to literature, philosophy, technology, sciences, politics, the military, economics, even music—all have made seminal con- tributions to the evolution of architecture and its discourses, often shift- ing the focus from purely architectural questions to hybrid applications. Yet some of these interdisciplinary shifts may have served as more of an escapist movement than an actual attempt to translate the findings back into architectural designs. In contrast, other strategies tend to ex- plain architecture through architecture, which often results in sterile, self-reflecting monuments—almost like architectural mirrors. These ten- dencies lead either to a condition of heteronomy that removes architecture from its foundations, or to a state of autonomy, making genuine commu- nication with society equally impossible.« As a consequence, architecture has created various forms of “utopia”: playgrounds of both the introverted and extroverted, fantastic possibili- ties, all of which avoid a true confrontation with reality.

Traditionally these levels are painstakingly designed by hand, often from pre-existing building blocks, or space templates. In this paper, we propose an algorithmic approach for automatically laying out game levels from user-specified blocks. Our method allows designers to retain control of the gameplay flow via user-specified level connectivity graphs, while relieving them from the tedious task of manually assembling the building blocks into a valid, plausible layout. Our method produces sequences of diverse layouts for the same input connectivity, allowing for repeated replay of a given level within a visually different, new environment. We support complex graph connectivities and various building block shapes, and are able to compute complex layouts in seconds. The two key components of our algorithm are the use of configuration spaces defining feasible relative positions of building blocks within a layout and a graph-decomposition based layout strategy that leverages graph connectivity to speed up convergence and avoid local minima. Together these two tools quickly steer the solution toward feasible layouts. We demonstrate our method on a variety of real-life inputs, and generate appealing layouts conforming to user specifications. Jensen A dissertation submitted to the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Neuroscience Graduate Program December 2019 Committee Chairs Mark Baccei, Ph.D. Steven Crone, Ph.D. i Abstract Respiratory failure is the leading cause of death in in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and spinal cord injury patients. Therefore, it is important to identify neural substrates that may be targeted to improve breathing following disease and injury. We show that a class of ipsilaterally projecting, excitatory interneurons located in the brainstem and spinal cord – V2a neurons – play key roles in controlling respiratory muscle activity in health and disease. We used chemogenetic approaches to increase or decrease V2a excitability in healthy mice and following disease or injury. First, we showed that silencing V2a neurons in neonatal mice caused slow and irregular breathing. However, silencing V2a neurons in adult mice did not alter the regularity of respiration and actually increased breathing frequency, suggesting that V2a neurons play different roles in controlling breathing at different stages of development. V2a neurons also pattern respiratory muscle activity. Our lab has previously shown that increasing V2a excitability activates accessory respiratory muscles at rest in healthy mice. Surprisingly, we show that silencing V2a neurons also activated accessory respiratory muscles. These data suggest that two types of V2a neurons exist: Type I V2a neurons activate accessory respiratory muscles at rest whereas Type II V2a neurons prevent their activation when they are not needed.

The Malthusian Paradox is a transmedia alternate reality game (ARG) created by artists Dominic Shaw and Adam Sporne played by 300 participants over three months. We explore the design of the game, which cast players as agents of a radical organisation attempting to uncover the truth behind a kidnapping and a sinister biotech corporation, and highlight how it redefined performative frames by blurring conventional performer and spectator roles in sometimes discomforting ways. Players participated in the game via a broad spectrum of interaction channels, including performative group spectacles and 1-to-1 engagements with game characters in public settings, making use of low- and high-tech physical and online artefacts including bespoke and third party websites. Players and game characters communicated via telephony and social media in both a designed and an ad-hoc manner. We reflect on the production and orchestration of the game, including the dynamic nature of the strong episodic narrative driven by professionally produced short films that attempted to respond to the actions of players; and the difficulty of designing for engagement across hybrid and temporally expansive performance space. Sredinom dvehiljaditih art game su doživele uspeh. Među njima je Pac Manhattan iz 2004, – real life igra koja se zasnivala na Pacmanu. Igrači su bili studenti koji su je kreirali- koristili su wi-fi tehnologiju, open-source software i mobilne telefone. http://www.pacmanhattan.com/ Sličan koncept je imala i igra CAN ZOU SEE ME NOW, gde je bila mešana online-offline igra , a igrači su bili opremljeni ručnim komjuterima, GPSom, voki-tokijima da bi jurili online igrače koji su svoje avatare pomerali kroz virtuelni model istog grada.
