FACT CHECK

MYTH: Some programs are able to teach people world language in a matter of days or weeks, so there is no reason why language learning should take a long time.

REALITY: There is a great difference between the conversational phrases taught by short-term language programs and the high level academic fluency needed to succeed in school, college, and the high skills job market. The conversational phrases taught by short-term language programs limits what the speaker is able to do to basic situation.

Class of 2020 - SENIORS: Apply to College NOW! Seniors are encouraged to apply to colleges and universities, as their admissions processes are open now. Students should gather materials such as lists of activities, involvements, community service and recognitions, and letters of recommendation (if necessary) to make completing applications easier. It is also advisable to apply online.

Regardless of the kind of school students plan on attending, it is very important to apply early. Technical college programs, especially, fill quickly on a first come first serve basis. Our goal is for ALL seniors going on to post-secondary education to have applications turned in as soon as possible!

Application Process : Once a student has completed their application, he or she should: 1. Request a transcript in person in OHS Student Services. (Transcript request fee: $1.00) 2. Applications completed using online programs like the Common Application or Send Edu will request a high school counselor’s email address. Transcripts for these applications are sent directly to colleges using these programs and do not require students to pay or make transcript requests in person. 3. Include letters of recommendation, IF necessary (Most schools do NOT require letters of recommendation) 4. Include check for application fee unless paid online (no cash please) 5. Give all materials directly to Mrs. de Boer in Student Services to ensure that your application is complete. 6. IF required bring completed application or counselor sheet from application to Student Services.

Counselors will complete requested information, and all application materials will be mailed out in a timely manner.

It’s Financial Aid Time! FAFSA: Find more information about earning money for college on the “Paying for College” link on the Student Services website. To apply for financial aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filled out online. Be sure to register for a FSA ID # at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/ BEFORE filling out the FAFSA form! Contact your college to find out their campus- specific financial aid priority deadline. UW system schools have priority deadlines ranging from December 1 – February 1. FSA ID: Seniors and their parents BOTH need to create a FSA ID to be able to complete and submit their financial aid application. Now is a great time to start the federal financial aid process by visiting https://fafsa.gov/, clicking on the FSA ID icon in the top left corner, and creating your FSA ID.

Financial Aid/Scholarship Assistance from OHS School Counselors February 12 & 13 IN SCHOOL DURING RESOURCE High school seniors will have an opportunity to receive assistance filling out financial aid and scholarship applications. OHS school counselors will be available on February 12 & 13 during Resource in the English Computer Lab, room 314. It will be important for students to know their social security number to start the financial aid process. The following are examples of tasks students may work on during this time to assist them with finding money for college: *Starting or completing the FAFSA *Completing letter of recommendation requests *Searching for and completing scholarships from a college *Starting or completing the OHS scholarship application.

ACT Prep Course Options

Preparing for the ACT can increase test scores to gain entry into the college of your choice and receive scholarships. There are several options that are available each year which can help students prepare for this test.

1. All juniors took a FREE practice ACT test this September. Students received their score reports including sub scores, a composite score and most importantly an itemized list of correct answers compared to student answers. Students should use the test book they received with their results to see the questions they answered correctly and identify content they need to review more.

2. Actacademy.act.org is available for students to use to prepare for the ACT. Students create a free account, go to “Dashboard,” click “Enter your results and skip these quizzes” then enter their % correct from the practice ACT results” (EG under Math students enter; number & quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, etc.). A selection of the statistically proven most effective free on line videos and prep sources to improve your own scores will be listed. Students can begin their own multi source ACT prep class!

3. Onalaska High School has recently purchased FREE access for all OHS Juniors to Method Test Prep – an interactive, online program for test preparation. Access will be found via student’s Xello account which can be accessed via the student’s PowerSchool account.

4. There are FREE resources located in the Student Services office, such as practice tests, which can be scored and timed by the student. Several FREE resources are also available online at sites such as ACT.org. Every Junior at OHS will also participate in a FREE two-day ACT prep program this February.

5. Onalaska High School will offer a 6-hour ACT Workshop this winter with Schoolhouse Educational Services. This program will emphasize specific test-taking strategies for each of the five ACT subject, and costs approximately $50 per student plus an optional $25 workbook. Space is limited to 40 students. Registration forms are available in Student Services and the “Junior” section of our website.

6. UW-L’s Continuing Education office offers a twice-annual ACT prep course. Students will learn test- taking strategies, receive instruction in each of the four testing areas, and take a retired pre- and post-ACT test. Writing strategies to assist you in the essay part of the ACT test will also be provided. This course runs for 6 Saturday mornings in October – November, OR December – February. Students will enter their course requests in their PowerSchool account at: http://sis.onalaska.k12.wi.us/public. Students will receive specific instructions on how to enter these selections online on January 3. Online course selections and parent signed course selection worksheets will be due to counselors on January 10.

Many significant staffing, supply, and course offering decisions are made based on the requests made by students. Be sure to put careful thought into course selections, as counselors will not be able to make changes after the schedule is created.
