24th April 2020 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

…Work hard, be kind, be proud This week has been our first full week of home learning for the whole school since the Easter break and I have been pleased to see the amount of work that is being set and returned by students. As part of our High Performance Learning strategy, we encourage students to learn independently. We also use many different sources to allow for differentiation of this learning, which means that students can learn at any level within a topic. You will see from the learning pages of this newsletter that we are setting one topic per subject each week for each Year group. This is to ensure that there is sufficient learning happening to mitigate the effect of not being in the classroom but not too much to be onerous for most students.

We hope that this not only keeps our students engaged but helps them to pass the hours of the school day in a productive fashion without getting bored. The work produced is then marked and we are contacting students with feedback, or where appropriate talking to parent/carers. …Top Tip A top tip to keep on top of things is to have a routine. Get up and be dressed ready for the school day to commence and then split your day into the times of the school day, taking breaks and having lunch. It is amazing how much help this is if you can keep it up. A number of our Year 11 students are, unsurprisingly, feeling a little unsettled at the moment due to their uncertainty over the exam grades. The government has told schools that they can't share with students, or their parents, what grades they think the students would have achieved in the summer. We will base grades on their work in lessons and how much we would expect them to improve on the mock grades. Students who want to improve on the grades awarded to them by the school/government in August may have the opportunity to sit exams in the Autumn. Mega Music Good Luck Molly Finally, congratulations to our Music Department who have just received the Bernice McCabe Award 2020 from the Princes Teaching Institute. This award is given to the school whose Music Department has consistently achieved the highest standards in teaching and learning practice. It is well deserved recognition for all the hard work our staff and students put into Music at Mounts Bay all year round. Well Done!

Best wishes

Bio-diverse seedlings in recycled modules

Over Easter key workers’ children along with Luke, Kirsty, Huck, Woody and Shelley have Courgettes been keeping an eye on Spring springing in the MBA garden.

We've had to cope with watering issues, too little, then too much and birds eating the seedlings. Nets have now been put in place and planting out of the seedlings sowed before lockdown, has begun in earnest. Nature is clearly not on lockdown.

This last week has been exciting as we have Pumpkin and tomato filled in the beds in the polytunnel and planted melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes. These will all climb up pieces of string tied to the top of the polytunnel, hopefully creating a forest of lovely plants over the next few months. Basil plants are squeezed in around these climbers as well.

World Book Night

What have you been reading? What would you recommend?

World Book Night is run by The Reading Agency, a national charity that tackles life’s big challenges through the proven power of reading. It is a national celebration of reading and books that takes place on 23 April every year.

Up and down the country, individuals and organisations celebrate the difference that reading makes to people’s lives, and everyone from publishers to librarians, and local businesses to the general public can get involved.

Here are some recommendations and comments about reading from MBA students:

Frederick – ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’

Frederick is reading ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Earthman’. In this book, Arthur Dent is rescued by his friend, Ford Prefect - an alien researcher for the titular Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, an enormous work providing information about every planet in the universe— from the Earth just before it is destroyed by the alien Vogons. After being tossed out of the Vogon ship that they hitched a ride on, Arthur and Ford are rescued by the Heart of Gold, a spaceship driven by Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford's semi-cousin and the President of the Galaxy. The ship's crew—Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, a depressed robot named Marvin, and a human woman by the name of Trillian—embark on a journey to find the legendary planet known as Magrathea, known for selling luxury planets. Otis Year 7 - The Diary of Anne Frank - World Book Night

The person I have chosen to write about is Anne Frank from “The Diary Of Anne Frank”. This is a diary Anne kept while hiding with her family during the Nazi occupation of Holland.

From what she writes my first impression is that she is quite popular and her parents are fairly wealthy. My point of reference is from page 11 when her Maths teacher Mr Keesing assigns her an essay on the topic of a chatter box because she chatted in his lesson. She did not stop talking. As she does not stop, she is assigned another essay on being an incorrigible chatterbox. I thought it was interesting that she didn’t try to change after the first essay. When she first goes into hiding on the 8th of July 1942, she quickly becomes depressed and this continued until she becomes more optimistic. Sadly though, her situation is getting even worse.

I also noticed that she doesn’t write as much in the first two years when she is having problems settling in and spend almost ¾ of the book on one year and goes through 2 years in almost 100 pages. I think she has changed from how she was at the start as in if she was set an essay at the end about being a chatterbox, she would try to change this rather than continue. She seems also much more independent than she was at the start.

My summary of the book is that there seems to be no climax. The plot is in constant climax this is because she only writes about important things so it is always in suspense.

It is also interesting to know that it all took place in real life and you can see how it would be a very useful source to find out about the time and how and where people hid. I would definitely recommend it to someone who hasn’t read it.

It’s also amazing such a famous book/diary was written by a 13 year old it’s also cool she wishes to write a book that will mean she lives on after she dies and that it happened. She became famous for writing this book and that it was what she always wanted. BE ENTERTAINED

Music In our virtual music lessons, Year 7 and 8 students have been continuing to explore the Essential Question; “How can music define a generation”. One of our favourite topics of the year, students are given the opportunity to explore and produce a music timeline from the last 100 years noting how genres and styles have developed over time and, most interestingly, which styles have been revived!

There are some wonderful pictures coming in from Year 7 students who have been spending some time at home in the kitchen preparing delicious food.

We would love to see what you’ve been up to. Just send us a picture of yourself cooking and your gastronomic creations, and why not include a quote from someone who tasted your food. We would also love to share your recipes. Who knows, you could be, or could inspire the next Gordon Ramsay or Prue Leith.

Documentary of the Week.

BBC iPlayer - ‘Beauty Laid Bare’ (3 episodes): https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p08119sn/beauty-laid-bare

During two weeks investigating America’s beauty industry, the group sees the good, the bad and the ugly side of it. They see first-hand how cosmetics are produced and sold and are confronted with the environmental and health effects of the products used. They then have the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practice and make their own products, and they discover the dilemmas faced when trying to create a product that is both ethical and affordable.

Is the beauty industry capable of change? And will the group make any changes based on what they have discovered?

Photosynthesis

What happens if a plant doesn’t get enough sunlight? Photosynthesis is a process that happens in plants. This chemical reaction is how plants produce their food. What happens if we take away sunlight?

Photosynthesis equation: Carbon dioxide + water + energy from light produces glucose and oxygen

6CO2 + 6H20 + (energy) → C6H12O6 + 6O2

You will need:

Scissors Black paper (other colours may work) Paperclips or sello-tape Houseplant

Method:

1. Cut your piece of paper big enough to cover 1 leaf on the houseplant you are using 2. Use the paper clips or sello-tape to hold the paper on it. Make sure no sunlight can get to the leaf 3. Leave the plant on the windowsill for about 5 days. 4. After 5 days take off the paper, what has happened to leaf? Why do you think this has happened?

Report by Mrs Wheeler FILM RECOMMENDATION

Dumbo (1941) U

Many of you are probably familiar with the Dumbo story, especially due to the 2019 release of Tim Burton’s CGI laden remake. Considering the original was made almost 80 years ago (!), I encourage you all to revisit the beautiful original animation.

The premise: there’s a new baby elephant at the circus who happens to be a little different: he’s got enormous ears! The other animals ridicule him for this and, as his mother tries to defend him, they are separated, leaving Dumbo to fend for himself. Luckily, he meets Timothy, a mouse who helps Dumbo discover he has an unusual talent.

Why is it so good? Disney has become a household name, synonymous with high-quality family entertainment, stories of great friendships and adorable anthropomorphism (giving animals human characteristics) and the studio’s fourth feature film, ‘Dumbo’, is no exception. The traditional, hand-drawn animation is far more simple than previous Disney feature films, due to economic constraints, but it still manages to retain a high level of realism, with the animators famously bringing real elephants into the studio to study their motion for accuracy in their drawings. The trippy pink elephant scene is so memorable due to the extremely catchy song ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ and for demonstrating seamless transformation and metamorphosis, harking back to the early days of animation in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

As with many of the classic Disney animations there are universal themes and messages aplenty in ‘Dumbo’. Perhaps the most important one for me is that you should use what makes you different as your strength, a message that we all need reminding about from time to time - what makes us different, makes us great!

Considering ‘Dumbo’ was made to recoup the losses from ‘Fantasia’ (1940), I believe the studio has produced a timeless classic that will have you teary-eyed and laughing in equal measures.

At a mere 64 minutes, it should be easy to find the time to watch this wonderful coming-of-age fable and, interestingly, Dumbo is the very first Disney protagonist to not speak at all in a feature film, can you think of any others?

Unprecedented Times Exhibition

We have been receiving entries for the ‘Unprecedented Times’ Exhibition to be held at MBA, some time in the future from both MBA students and staff and external artists.

This week we are featuring a couple of major contributions from members of staff.

Ms Helen Jones completed this sculpture she had started before lockdown during the first week. She writes

“To prepare to sculpt a portrait you need an armature which is a structure to put your clay around. Good quality photos and head measurements of the person you are sculpting are essential. Start by adding the clay to the armature until you have the basic shape of a head and neck. Then you can start to concentrate on the features . Each head takes about 40 hours to sculpt. If and when a likeness emerges it is extremely rewarding.”

Since lockdown she has taken to watercolours as she has been unable to get hold of all the materials. Thanks for these beautiful contributions.

The second member of staff, Jack Kernow, produced a must see work of musical art for this weeks qube records pod cast! (go listen!). His video which you can find on the website will feature in the exhibition.

Following on the music theme, a fellow drama teacher's son has sent us his acapella group in isolation. Have a watch and get inspired with your socially distant mates! It's his college all male choir called 'Tectonics.' Click here to watch it.
