3rd March 2017 STANDING OUT THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY Cover: GCSE Art - Tallulah Year 11 24th April 2020 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT …Work hard, be kind, be proud This week has been our first full week of home learning for the whole school since the Easter break and I have been pleased to see the amount of work that is being set and returned by students. As part of our High Performance Learning strategy, we encourage students to learn independently. We also use many different sources to allow for differentiation of this learning, which means that students can learn at any level within a topic. You will see from the learning pages of this newsletter that we are setting one topic per subject each week for each Year group. This is to ensure that there is sufficient learning happening to mitigate the effect of not being in the classroom but not too much to be onerous for most students. We hope that this not only keeps our students engaged but helps them to pass the hours of the school day in a productive fashion without getting bored. The work produced is then marked and we are contacting students with feedback, or where appropriate talking to parent/carers. …Top Tip A top tip to keep on top of things is to have a routine. Get up and be dressed ready for the school day to commence and then split your day into the times of the school day, taking breaks and having lunch. It is amazing how much help this is if you can keep it up. A number of our Year 11 students are, unsurprisingly, feeling a little unsettled at the moment due to their uncertainty over the exam grades. The government has told schools that they can't share with students, or their parents, what grades they think the students would have achieved in the summer. We will base grades on their work in lessons and how much we would expect them to improve on the mock grades. Students who want to improve on the grades awarded to them by the school/government in August may have the opportunity to sit exams in the Autumn. Mega Music Good Luck Molly Finally, congratulations to our Music Department who have just received the Bernice McCabe Award 2020 from the Princes Teaching Institute. This award is given to the school whose Music Department has consistently achieved the highest standards in teaching and learning practice. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap

Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Keywords: dromosphere, dromology, Afrofuturism, electro-rap, thirdspace, fantasy, Newcleus, Strange U Introduction During the mid-1970s, the language of New York City’s pioneering hip hop practitioners brought them fame amongst their peers, yet the methods of its musical production brought heavy criticism from established musicians.

    G64DBS EXERCISE 3: QUERYING THE DATABASE INTRODUCTION This exercise will cover a variety of queries you can accomplish using SQL’s SELECT statement. If you have completed Exercises 1 and 2 then your database should contain tables for Artist and CD records. In order to add some variety for the queries, we should add a few more CDs. If you’d like more practice with INSERT and UPDATE operations then try to match your tables to these: mysql> SELECT * FROM Artist; +-------+---------------------------------+ | artID | artName | +-------+---------------------------------+ | 6 | Animal Collective | | 3 | DeadMau5 | | 7 | Kings of Leon | | 4 | Mark Ronson | | 5 | Mark Ronson & The Business Intl | | 8 | Maroon 5 | | 2 | Mr. Scruff | | 1 | Muse | +-------+---------------------------------+ 8 rows in set (0.00 sec) mysql> SELECT * FROM CD; +------+-------+-----------------------------+---------+---------------+ | cdID | artID | cdTitle | cdPrice | cdGenre | +------+-------+-----------------------------+---------+---------------+ | 1 | 1 | Black Holes and Revelations | 9.99 | Rock | | 2 | 1 | The Resistance | 11.99 | Rock | | 3 | 2 | Ninja Tuna | 9.99 | Electronica | | 4 | 3 | For Lack of a Better Name | 9.99 | Electro House | | 5 | 4 | Version | 11.99 | Rock | | 6 | 5 | Record Collection | 12.99 | Pop | | 7 | 6 | Merriweather Post Pavilion | 12.99 | Electronica | | 8 | 7 | Only By The Night | 9.99 | Rock | | 9 | 7 | Come Around Sundown | 12.99 | Rock | | 10 | 8 | Hands All Over | 11.99 | Pop | +------+-------+-----------------------------+---------+---------------+ 10 rows in set (0.00 sec) You may have different ID values, do not worry about this.
