We extend a warm welcome to the directors, committee, staff, players and supporters of Leiston Reserves. We would like to wish you all an enjoyable afternoon at Blackhouse lane. We please ask that all visitors to Blackhouse Lane respect todays match officials, both on and off of the field of play. The match officials have a difficult job to do and without them we would not be able to play football. Cornard United F.C. History Cornard United are believed to have formed in 1920, playing in the Sudbury & District League for four seasons. They then transferred to the Nayland & District League for the 1924/25 – 1927/28 seasons, winning the league in all four seasons they were in it. In 1928/29 they returned back to the Sudbury & District League. Nothing is known of the club between 1929 and when they reformed in 1964. In 2014, Cornard United celebrated its Golden Jubilee, having been re-formed back in 1964. The club initially played in The Sudbury Sunday League, before joining Division Three of The Bury and District League in 1966. They were promoted to Division Two at the end of their first season, and further promoted again at the end of the next season. In 1970 they transferred to Division Six of The Colchester & East Essex League and were promoted to Division Five in 1972. After winning all 26 matches of the 1973-74 season they were promoted once again, and over the next few seasons, further success brought more promotions so by 1975 they had reached Division Two. In 1976 the club switched leagues again, this time to Division One of The Essex and Suffolk Border League. However, when this league was restructured two seasons later the club were moved down to the Second Division. They remained in the Second Division until 1983 when they were promoted back to Division One. In 1985- 86 they won promotion to the Premier Division, and in the 1988-89 season they won the league, the league cup and the Suffolk senior cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals, Sudbury Wanderers. As a result of this success, the club was moved to Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won this division at the first attempt, and were promoted to The Premier Division, where they remained until 1996, when after a poor season they were relegated back to the First Division, where they have remained ever since. Initially, the club played at the Great Cornard Recreation Ground, before moving to Great Cornard Upper School in 1975. It was not until 1982 that they moved to their current ground in Blackhouse Lane. The record attendance at this ground was set in 2001 when over 450 people watched a friendly match against West Ham United. After many years running The Club, Chairman and Manager, Chris Symes, left the club during 2013 and Mark Hoskin took over the roles. He, in turn, has now moved on and the current Chairman is Harvey Doherty who took over in 2014 after spending 10 years as chairman of Cornard dynamos. Cornard United F.C. History Cont… The first team was managed by Paul Grainger, with Chris Tracy assisted by Jack Wignall taking over for 2015/16. Ry Lines & Liam Aves took up the reins partway through 2017/18 season which was very much a transition season. Family commitments have meant that Ry Lines stepped down ahead of the 2018/19 season. The current management team is Mathew Grove and Mike Schofield with Colin Athey as goal keeping coach. Cornard United also run reserve and U18 teams. The Reserve Team playing in the Thurlow Nunn Reserve league, managed by experienced Ray Manser and Steve Rogers and the Under 18s play in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League, South Division and for 2018/19 has seen them managed by Alex Watson. In the early days, games were played on the old Recreation Ground adjacent to Gas Hill (now known as Park Hill) and players would change at either the White Horse Hotel or at the Works Hall. In the early 1920’s Richard Garrett’s bought the ground off Victory Road renaming it the Leiston Works Athletic Association and this has been the home for over 90 years although the ground name was changed in the 1980’s to LTAA (Leiston Town Athletics Association). In the early years the club were members of the North Suffolk League and then Ipswich and District League, winning the latter League three times in 1900, 1901 & 1902. They then had two spells in the East Anglian League sandwiched between spells in the Ipswich & District League. After the Great War the club was reformed as Leiston Works Athletic and during the 1920’s were part of three Leagues – Essex and Suffolk Border League, Ipswich & District League and North Suffolk League. In 1934 the club returned to be called Leiston Town spending fourteen years in the Ipswich & District League before returning to the North Suffolk League for a third time but yet again returning to the Ipswich & District League five years later in 1953 where they stayed for the next 48 years. During the Second World War the King’s Regiment, which included most of the players of Liverpool FC, were stationed at Leiston and they played some of their matches at the LWAA ground. Leiston Town were ‘Full Members’ of the Football Association from the early 1950’s until 1982 following their relegation from the Senior Division (the only other Suffolk teams to be Full Members at this time were Ipswich Town and Lowestoft Town) and soon after this period the club dropped the Town part to become just Leiston FC. During this period Leiston were accepted and played in the FA Cup, FA Amateur Cup and later the FA Vase. The clubs Youth team were the first club in Suffolk to enter the FA Youth Challenge Cup reaching the First Round and a trip to Highbury to face Arsenal in 1954 where they took an early lead before losing 8-1 to the Gunners. In 1980 the club received the ‘Illuminated Address’ from the Football Association to celebrate the club’s centenary but this decade saw some indifferent form in the Suffolk & Ipswich League including relegation to Division One in 1983 and a third place finish in the Senior Division in 1986. Further relegations and promotions followed into the 1990’s before the club achieved their long term goal of progression to the Eastern Counties set up in 2001 finishing third and the necessary promotion placing. Despite their prestigious history, Leiston Football Club has not had the best of fortune with regards to silverware. After a hat-trick of League titles in 1900, 1901 and 1902 they had to wait 36 years before winning the Ipswich & District League Division Two and then a further 45 years for another Senior trophy.

A warm welcome to you all back to Victory Road today where we host Tamworth for what no doubt will be another tough encounter, much like our last home game against Coalville that ended in a 1-1 draw. Since then, we have suffered two heavy away defeats that have identified a few issues that we have and are working on. In both games, we felt we were relatively comfortable in possession, but the main difference between ourselves and our opponents in the two defeats has been what happens off the ball. • Needham Market Football Club Welcome and Chairman's Notes
2 NEEDHAM MARKET FOOTBALL CLUB WELCOME AND CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Firstly, my welcome to the players, management team, committee and supporters of Bromsgrove Sporting and to the match officials for this Pitching In Southern Premier League Central Division home league fixture. Another disappointing result on Tuesday night when, after going 1-0 up with a great strike from Ben Fawkes after 15 mins and having much the better of the first half ,we couldn’t add to our lead and paid the price by conceding a breakaway goal in the second half and ended up drawing the match 1-1 in a game we should have won. We played some good football for much of the game and had some good chances – the best being those of Ben Fowkes and Andy Fennell in the second half. It was good to have Keiran Morphew back as captain and to welcome Callum Page back on loan from Ipswich. Byron Lawrence was my MOTM just ahead of Ben and Keiran. Looking back in the club’s history at the corresponding Saturday fixtures over the last 10 years there was no game last season due to Covid restrictions but two seasons ago, on 19th August 2019 we lost 1-0 away against Nuneaton Borough with Sam Squire MOTM. Three seasons ago, on 18th August 2018 we lost 2-0 at home to Barwell with Jake Dye MOTM. Four seasons ago, on 19th August 2017 we lost 1-0 at home against Wingate in our last season in the Isthmian Premier League with Danny Gay getting MOTM.

  • Needham Market Football Club Welcome and Chairman's Notes
2 NEEDHAM MARKET FOOTBALL CLUB WELCOME AND CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Firstly, my welcome to the players, management team, committee, and supporters of St Ives Town and to the match officials for this FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round match. Unfortunately, the new season has continued in a frustrating fashion with two more defeats – losing 1-0 at home against Bromsgove Sporting two weeks ago and then 2-0 away last Saturday against Coalville. Both were games we should have won – not just my opinion but those of our opponents’ directors after the games! We are playing well – our performance in the game at Coalville on Saturday was our best of the season – we dominated possession and for most of the game we were by far the better side – but two mistakes in the final five minutes of the first half saw us go in 2-0 down at half time and, despite numerous chances, we just could not score which has been our problem in all four of our games so far this season. Hopefully this will change in today’s Emirates FA Cup game, and we can take a victory (as well as the £2,250 prize money) into the next round and into our next league game next Saturday away against Banbury Utd. Looking back in the club’s history at the corresponding Saturday fixtures over the last 10 years there were no games played last year owing to Covid restrictions, but I see that two seasons ago on 7th September 2019 we drew 1- 1 in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup away against Dereham with Dan Morphew MOTM and Luke Ingram scoring.
