REGION OVERVIEW The Brisbane (C) - South Region comprises the 84 statistical local areas of Acacia Ridge, Algester, Annerley, Archerfield, Balmoral, Belmont-Mackenzie, Bulimba, Burbank, Calamvale, Camp Hill, Cannon Hill, Carina, Carina Heights, Carindale, Chandler-Capalaba West, Chelmer, Coopers Plains, Coorparoo, Corinda, Darra-Sumner, Doolandella-Forest Lake, Durack, Dutton Park, East Brisbane, Eight Mile Plains, Ellen Grove, Fairfield, Graceville, Greenslopes, Gumdale-Ransome, Hawthorne, Hemmant-Lytton, Highgate Hill, Holland Park, Holland Park West, Inala, Jamboree Heights, Jindalee, Kangaroo Point, Kuraby, Lota, MacGregor, Manly, Manly West, Mansfield, Middle Park, Moorooka, Morningside, Mount Gravatt, Mount Gravatt East, Mount Ommaney, Murarrie, Nathan, Norman Park, Oxley, Pallara-Heathwood-Larapinta, Parkinson-Drewvale, Richlands, Riverhills, Robertson, Rochedale, Rocklea, Runcorn, Salisbury, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sherwood, South Brisbane, Stretton - Karawatha, Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Tarragindi, Tingalpa, Upper Mount Gravatt, Wacol, Wakerley, West End (Brisbane), Westlake, Willawong, Wishart, Woolloongabba, Wynnum, Wynnum West, Yeerongpilly and Yeronga. It has a total area of 478.3 km2, or 0.0 per cent of the total area of the state. The region has an average daily temperature range of 14.9 oC to 25.8 oC and on average Brisbane (C) - South Region receives approximately 1,101 mm of rainfall each year. Demography As at 30 June 2010, the estimated resident population of Brisbane (C) - South Region was 576,017 persons, or 12.8 per cent of the state's population. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 7,773 persons in Brisbane (C) - South Region who stated they were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, or 1.5 per cent of the total population. At the time of the 2006 Census, in Brisbane (C) - South Region, 46.2 per cent of persons were living (usually residing) at a different address five years earlier. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 27.0 per cent of persons in Brisbane (C) - South Region who stated they were born overseas. In Brisbane (C) - South Region, 9.6 per cent of the 2006 usual resident population were in the most disadvantaged quintile and 32.8 per cent of the population of Brisbane (C) - South Region were in the least disadvantaged quintile. Society In 2009, 65.6 per cent of students attending a school in Brisbane (C) - South Region attended a government school and 34.4 per cent attended a non-government school. At the time of the 2006 Census, in Brisbane (C) - South Region, there were 55.4 per cent of persons aged 15 years and over with a post-school qualification. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 3.6 per cent of persons in need of assistance with a profound or severe disability in Brisbane (C) - South Region. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 17.8 per cent of persons aged 15 years and over who were volunteers in the Brisbane (C) - South Region. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 153,219 persons aged 15 years and over in the Brisbane (C) - South Region who stated their gross individual weekly income was less than $400 (36.9 per cent of all persons aged 15 years and over). As at 30 June 2009 in Brisbane (C) - South Region, there were 97 aged-care service providers, with a total of 5,443 places in operation. Economic Performance The smoothed unemployment rate for Brisbane (C) - South Region in the December quarter 2010 was 5.2 per cent. At the time of the 2006 Census, Health Care and Social Assistance was the largest industry of employment for Brisbane (C) - South Region usual residents, with 11.1 per cent of the region's employed labour force. Industry and Development In the 12 months ending 31 March 2011, there were 3,774 dwelling units in new residential buildings approved in Queensland Regional Profiles, Brisbane (C) - South Region 28 June 2011 Page 3 Brisbane (C) - South Region, which represented a total of $974.9 million. The total value of agricultural production in the Brisbane (C) - South Region in 2005–06 was $25.3 million, 0.3 per cent of the total value of agricultural production in Queensland. In 2008–09, there were 51,758 businesses in Brisbane (C) - South Region, 12.3 per cent of all Queensland businesses. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 68.2 per cent of all occupied private dwellings in the region with an internet connection. Queensland Regional Profiles, Brisbane (C) - South Region 28 June 2011 Page 4 ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION As at 30 June 2010, the estimated resident population of Brisbane (C) - South Region was 576,017 persons, 12.8 per cent of the state's population. The population of Brisbane (C) - South Region increased by 8,337 persons between 30 June 2009 and 2010 (see following table). This was a 9.4 per cent share of the state's population growth over this period. The region recorded a population growth rate of 1.5 per cent between 30 June 2009 and 2010 (Queensland, 2.0 per cent). Within the region, the largest increase in population occurred in Wakerley Statistical Local Area (SLA), up by 505 persons in the year to 30 June 2010, accounting for 6.1 per cent of all growth in Brisbane (C) - South Region. The fastest growing statistical local area between 2009 and 2010 was Richlands SLA (17.7 per cent), followed by Pallara-Heathwood-Larapinta SLA (15.7 per cent) and Wakerley SLA (7.5 per cent).
