    Kassidy Hanson Erin Daly A Change of Faith t’s 8:30 a.m. on a sunny Saturday in August 2012, and I’ve been Iawake for two hours, fueled by pancakes, eggs, and a Mountain Dew from a mediocre local breakfast joint. I’m sitting on a curb a few yards from the only high school in Dixon, Illinois, surround- ed by a small collection of strangers who are chatting about how far they’ve traveled. There’s a father and son from the eastern U.S., a young woman who looks my age from Toronto, a mother and her teenage daughter from Minneapolis. They’re also chat- ting about why we’re all gathered in this new town on this sum- mer Saturday: Mumford & Sons, our favorite band, is putting on a music festival, and we’re waiting for the venue gates to open so we can secure front-row spots for their performance that evening. Self Portrait I occasionally jump in and contribute to the conversations I hear, pen and ink stipple drawing but most of my attention is focused on the high school grounds, my eyes darting to every new human form I see. I’m trying to discern if they resemble Mumford & Sons, because from what I’ve learned from fans on the internet, it’s possible to meet them before their shows. Suddenly this town has become my personal Lourdes or Guadalupe, and I am one pilgrim among hundreds hoping for a personal encounter with the band that changed my life. On a similarly sunny August day a year earlier, my dad dropped me and a suitcase off at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago for a four-day conference dedicated to helping young Catholics discern a life of service to the Church.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SEE IT TO BE IT ART SONGS BY AMERICAN WOMEN COMPOSERS Jennifer Piazza-Pick, Doctor of Musical Arts in Solo Voice, 2020 Dissertation directed by: Delores Ziegler, Professor of Voice and Martha Randall, Lecturer of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy, School of Music This dissertation is a short survey of art songs by American women composers from the latter part of the nineteenth century to the present. Interest in women composers is not new, yet equality has not been achieved. Concerts and recitals featuring women composers are often used as tokens to show that an organization is being inclusive. Instead, true inclusivity would regularly showcase male and female composers equally. The repertoire performed in these three recitals is not only appropriate for a professional singer but includes selections that can be sung by beginners and intermediate singers as well. The repertoire was carefully selected for texts and composition worthy of a place on any recital, regardless of difficulty. The goal was to contribute to the expansion and diversification of the standard vocal repertoire that is often assigned in university music programs. The first recital contains four important early America women composers: Amy Beach, Florence Price, Mary Howe, and Margaret Bonds. The second recital contained music by women in the twentieth century. Some of the women in this recital were born in the 1900s, but are still composing today, so repertoire was chosen that had been written in the twentieth century. Music written in the twenty-first century was the focus of the final recital. Singers begin their vocal study using art songs, yet the standard repertoire that is assigned is almost exclusively written by men.
