The new species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of char- acters: body with pale spots or vermiculations on darker background, 60-83 teeth on each mandibular row, one plate posteriorly bordering supraoccipital and moderate keels with odontodes. Stewart3 The Panaque nigrolineatus group (subgenus Panaque) is revised; three nominal species—P. cochliodon, P. nigrolineatus, and P. suttonorum—are redescribed and three new species are described. Panaque armbrusteri, new species, is widespread in the Tapajo´ s River and its tributaries in Brazil and is distinguished by having a supraoccipital hump, higher numbers of jaw teeth and an ontogenetic increase in interpremaxillary and intermandibular tooth-row angles, relatively short paired-fin spines, and dorsal margin of infraorbital six flared laterally. Panaque schaeferi, new species, is widespread in main-channel habitats of the upper Amazon (Solimo˜es) River basin in Brazil and Peru; it is distinguished by having a coloration consisting of dark or faded black spots evenly distributed on a pale gray to brown base, and by its large adult body size (.570 mm SL). Panaque titan, new species, is distributed in larger, lowland to piedmont rivers of the Napo River basin in Ecuador, and is distinguished by having a postorbital pterotic region bulged beyond the ventral pterotic margin, coloration consisting of irregular and widely spaced dark gray to brown stripes on light brown to tan base, and large adult body size (.390 mm SL). A relatively large pterotic, indicative of an enlarged gas bladder and gas bladder capsule, and allometric increases in tooth number are hypothesized to be synapomorphies uniting members of the subgenus Panaque. Lefebvre Masters of Science Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The suckermouth armoured catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) are a diverse group of predominantly detritivorous fishes inhabiting rivers of South and Central America. Their distinct jaws are specialized for scraping a wide range of substrate. Though it is hypothesized that specialization of loricariid feeding morphology may have played a role in their diversification, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary processes involved. The present study quantifies variation in jaw functional traits and body morphology in a phylogenetic context. Morphological variation was compared to species’ relative position in assemblage isotope space (for both δ13C and δ15N) to test for correlations between diet and feeding morphology. Results show that although jaw functional traits are decoupled from body morphology, both are correlated with δ13C values. Partitioning of terrestrial and aquatic resources can be explained by both jaw functional traits and body morphology, however further partitioning of diet is only attributed to the former. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Nathan K.     Practical Fish Keeping Magazine—Questions asked by Matt Clarke Donovan P. German responses Which catfish groups have been observed eating wood? Two genera in the family Loricariidae: Panaque and Hypostomus. Hypostomus is a rather large genus with at least thirty described species, and the only ones known to eat wood are in the “Hypostomus cochliodon” group, which comprises about seven described species. There are approximately ten described species in the genus Panaque and they are split into two lineages: the small and large Panaque. The small clade includes the popular Panaque maccus (the clown pleco), whereas the large clade includes the popular P. nigrolineatus, the royal pleco. Outside of the family Loricariidae, no catfishes (order Siluriformes), or any fish species for that matter, is known to regularly ingest wood. What happens when catfish are fed on wood? Well, that depends on the species. In my studies, I fed Panaque nigrolineatus and Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus (formerly of the genus Liposarcus) wood in the laboratory and both species lost weight, were in negative nitrogen balance (i.e., they were burning their own protein reserves to survive), and generally didn’t do well on wood alone. This is not to take away from the point that species of Panaque do consume a large amount of decaying wood (~70% of their daily intake) in the wild, but they cannot survive on wood alone. The data was gathered from two main sources: 1) litterature compilations of species occurrence records, including original descriptions and re- visionary studies; and 2) specimens verification at the INPA fish collection. The results reveal a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 1,165 species distributed in 17 orders (+ two incertae sedis), 56 families, and 389 genera. A large portion of the fish fauna (54.3% of the species) is composed of small-sized fishes < 10 cm in standard length.

The new species is distinguished from all other Hypostomus species, with exception of young specimens of H. latifrons, by the presence of a wide dark transverse bars on laterals of body and fins; and conspicuous dark vermiculations on abdominal region. From H. latifrons it differs by having just one pre-dorsal plate surrounding supraoccipital bone and by the maintenance of the dark saddles in adults. Added to the other fish species recently described from the upper rio Paraguay basin, this work helps to highlight that the region still functions as a potential source of new species. Uma espécie nova de Hypostomus é descrita do rio Cuiabá, bacia do alto rio Paraguai, Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil. A espécie nova é diagnosticada de todas as outras congêneres, com exceção de H. latifrons, pela presença de amplas barras escuras transversais nas laterais do corpo e nadadeiras, e pelas conspícuas vermiculações escuras na região abdominal. De H. latifrons ela difere por ter somente uma placa pré-dorsal margeando o osso supraoccipital e pela manutenção das barras escuras transversais nos adultos. Somada a outras espécies de peixes recentemente descritas na bacia do alto rio Paraguai, este trabalho demonstra que a região ainda funciona como uma fonte potencial de espécies novas.

C. Tencatt1, Cláudio H. Zawadzki2 and Otávio Froehlich3 Hypostomus cochliodon group is a monophyletic clade of 20 valid species of Neotropical armored catfishes that is widely distributed throughout South America. Recently, specimens identified as H. cochliodon from the type locality and nearby localities were examined, and found to include representatives of more than one species. A redescription of H. cochliodon is provided, with a description of two new species, one from the Bodoquena Plateau and another from several localities of the rio Paraguay basin. A lectotype for H. cochliodon is designated herein, since the previous designation is invalid. Hypostomus cochliodon is diagnosed from all other species of the H. cochliodon group by having the opercle almost completely covered laterally by thick layer of skin, the absence of buccal papilla, weak to moderately developed keels on the lateral plates of the body and by the color pattern of its body and fins. Hypostomus basilisko, new species, is distinguished from the remaining species of the H. cochliodon group by the absence of spots on the body, highly developed keels and spoon-shaped teeth. Hypostomus khimaera, new species, is distinguished from the other species of the H. cochliodon group by having a dark tan stripe along the midline of the flank, black spots on the body and/or fins and teeth with mesial cusp and not spoon-shaped.
