O que eu desejo ainda não tem nome.” (Clarice Lispector) RESUMO A tese intitulada A narrativa multidimensional: uma proposta de atualização e ruptura em narrativas de séries de animação a partir de Hora de Aventura empenha-se em investigar a animação seriada Hora de Aventura (Pendleton Ward, 2010), com ênfase em sua configuração narrativa. A justificativa da pesquisa reside no fato de o produto audiovisual apresentar, por um lado, estrutura diegética rizomática e hipertextual que compõe uma rede de ações e sentidos interconectada e, por outro lado, desenvolve uma abordagem simbólico-temática-estilística que resgata elementos do mítico, fantástico e maravilhoso, amalgamando-os às questões do contemporâneo para dialogar com seu espectador. Dessa maneira, observa-se que esses aspectos a distingue das demais do gênero. Considerando-se que as constantes modificações dos modos de vida na atual perspectiva social, cultural e midiática têm provocado novas formas de pensamento/criação/produção/consumo audiovisual, torna-se necessário estudar a referida obra posicionando-a no panorama de produção seriada de animação contemporânea. O problema de pesquisa reside, dessa maneira, na inauguração de um novo paradigma narrativo por Hora de Aventura a partir da identificação de sua diegese singular. Como hipótese, considera-se que a animação em questão abarca em seu esqueleto características de outras congêneres contemporâneas das quais se apropria para as aprimorar e expandir por meio de uma configuração hipertextual e rizomática que, aliada às novas formas de reflexão/produção simbólico-temáticas e estilísticas, organiza-se em uma rede sináptica que aponta para a formação da multidimensionalidade diegética. O objetivo central da tese é, portanto, analisar a constituição estrutural da série para revelar sua tessitura sináptica alicerçada em elementos plurívocos, híbridos e intertextuais que inauguram um universo fictício/narrativo multidimensional. O aporte teórico é baseado, entre outros, em Anthony Giddens, Christian Metz, Gerard Genette, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari e Gilbert Durand. ABSTRACT This thesis, entitled A narrativa multidimensional: uma proposta de atualização e ruptura estrutural de séries de animação, a partir de Hora de Aventura (Pendleton Ward, 2010) [The Multidimensional Narrative: A Proposal for Updating and Breaking Out of Animation Series Narratives from Adventure Time (Pendleton Ward, 2010)], endevours to investigate, with an emphasis on its narrative configuration. The justification of the research lies in the fact that the audiovisual product presents, on the one hand, a rhizomatic and hypertextual diegetic structure that composes an interconnected network of actions and meanings and, on the other hand, develops a symbolic-thematic-stylistic approach that rescues elements from the mythical, fantastic and wonderful, amalgamating them to contemporary issues to dialogue with their viewer. Thus, it is observed that these aspects distinguish it from others of its kind. Considering that the constant changes in the ways of life in the current social, cultural and media perspective have provoked new forms of audiovisual thinking / creation / production / consumption, it is necessary to study this work positioning it in the panorama of serial production of Contemporary animation. The research problem lies, therefore, in the inauguration of a new narrative paradigm by Adventure Time from the identification of its singular diegesis. As a hypothesis, it is considered that the animation in question encompasses in its skeleton characteristics of other contemporary counterparts of which it appropriates to improve and expand them through a hypertextual and rhizomatic configuration that, combined with the new forms of reflection / symbolic-thematic production and stylistic, it is organized in a synaptic network that points to the formation of diegetic multidimensionality. The main goal of the thesis is, therefore, to analyze the structural constitution of the series to reveal its synaptic texture based on plurivocal, hybrid and intertextual elements that inaugurate a fictional universe / narrative multidimensional. The theoretical basis is based, among others, on Anthony Giddens, Carlos Scolari, Marc Augé, Vilém Flusser, Raymond Williams, Mark Deuze, Henry Jenkins, Christian Metz, Gerard Genette, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Gilbert Durand.     Cartoons & Counterculture Azure Star Glover Introduction Entertainment media is one of the United States’ most lucrative and influential exports, and Hollywood, in Los Angeles County, California, has historically been the locus of such media’s production. While much study has been done on the subject of film and the connection between Hollywood and Los Angeles as a whole, there exists less scholarship on the topic of animated Hollywood productions, even less on the topic of changing rhetoric in animated features, and a dearth of information regarding the rise and influence of independent, so-called “indie” animation. This paper aims to synthesize scholarship on and close reading of the rhetoric of early Disney animated films such as Snow White and more modern cartoon television series such as The Simpsons with that of recently popular independently-created cartoon features such as “Narwhals,” with the goal of tracing the evolution of the rhetoric of cartoons created and produced in Hollywood and their corresponding reflection of Los Angeles culture. Hollywood and Animation In a 2012 report commissioned by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation acknowledged that “[f]or many people, the words Los Angeles and Hollywood are synonymous with entertainment” (“The Entertainment Industry” 1), and with good reason: Los Angeles’s year-round fair weather first attracted live-action filmmakers in the early 1900s, and filming-friendly Hollywood slowly grew into a Mecca of entertainment media production. In 2011, the entertainment industry accounted for “nearly 5% of the 3.3 million private sector wage and salary professionals and other independent contract workers,” generating over $120 billion in annual revenue (8.4% of Los Angeles County’s 2011 estimated annual Gross County Product), making this “one of the largest industries in the country” (“The 76 Azure Star Glover Entertainment Industry” 2).

Animating Social Pathology: Ontology, Aesthetics, and Cartoon Alienation by Wolfgang Boehm Under the Direction of Professor Greg Smith ABSTRACT This thesis grounds an unstable ontology in animation’s industrial history and its plas- matic aesthetics, in-so-doing I find animation to be a site of rendering visible a particular con- frontation with an inability to properly rationalize, ossify, or otherwise delimit traditionally held boundaries of motility. Because of this inability, animation is privileged as a form to rethink our interactions with media technology, leading to utopian thought and bizarre, pathological behav- ior. I follow the ontological trend through animation studies, using Pixar’s WALL-E as a guide. I explore animation as an afterimage of social pathology, which stands in contrast to the more lu- dic thought of a figure such as Sergei Eisenstein, using Black Mirror’s “The Waldo Moment.” I look to two Cartoon Network shows as examples of potential alternatives to both the utopian and pathological of the preceding chapters.

Beach, PhD, Advisor David Brakke, PhD Kristina Sessa, PhD Copyright by Shannon Marie Turner Li 2017 Abstract Through an examination of Irimbert of Admont’s (c. 1096-1176) scriptural commentaries, I argue that Irimbert makes use of traditional themes of scriptural interpretation while also engaging with contemporary developments in theology and spirituality. Irimbert of Admont and his writings have been understudied and generally mischaracterized in modern scholarship, yet a case study into his writings has much to offer in our understanding of theology and spirituality at the monastery of Admont and the wider context of the monastic Hirsau reform movement. The literary genre of exegesis itself offers a unique perspective into contemporary society and culture, and Irimbert’s writings, which were written within a short span, make for an ideal case study. Irimbert’s corpus of scriptural commentaries demonstrates strong themes of salvation history and the positive advancement of the Church, and he explores such themes in the unusual context of the historical books of the Old Testament, which were rarely studied by medieval exegetes. Irimbert thus utilizes biblical history to craft an interpretive scheme of salvation history that delicately combines traditional and contemporary exegetical, theological, and spiritual elements. The twelfth-century library at Admont housed an impressive collection of traditional patristic writings alongside the most recent scholastic texts coming out of Paris.
