Geilman Department of Religion, BYU Master of Arts This thesis is a study about the influence of the Book of Mormon message to the Lamanites upon the establishment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico, primarily focusing upon the years 1875-1950. Several important events, people, and publications from the first seventy-five years of the Church‘s history in Mexico are evaluated as historical case studies in order to examine the extent to which the message to the Lamanites influenced the beginnings of the Latter-day Saints there. These case studies include the first mission to Mexico in 1875, early publications in Spanish, the dedication of Mexico by Apostle Moses Thatcher, the presidency of Rey L. Pratt, and the Third Convention. Though this thesis provides pertinent historical background and details, as well as analysis of key primary sources and documents, its main purpose and contribution is its focus on the theme of the Lamanites, within the context of early Latter-day Saint history in Mexico. Hinckley remarked, ―Each of you is a part of the miracle that is Mormonism in Mexico. Never forget it. Never forget it.‖1 The Church has experienced phenomenal growth in Mexico, with membership exceeding one million.2 The growth, however, becomes even more significant when taken in the context of the beginnings of the Church there. As noted in the Ensign, one of the Church‘s official magazines, ―many members bear testimony that the growth has come as fulfillment of prophecy or in answer to the prayers of the righteous.‖3 The story of the Latter-day Saints in Mexico is one that is rich, not only in history, but in scriptural

    12 “To Every Nation, Kindred, Tongue, and People” Po Nien (Felipe) Chou and Petra Chou Po Nien (Felipe) Chou is a religious educator and manager of the Offi ce of Research for the Seminaries and Institutes (S&I) of Th e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Petra Chou is a homemaker and teaches in the Chinese Immersion program for the Alpine School District. he Book of Mormon was fi rst translated into the English language by Tthe Prophet Joseph Smith in 1829. Th e goal is now to make it avail- able “to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people” (Mosiah 15:28). Th is chapter explores the eff orts of Th e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to bring forth the Book of Mormon in other languages and to make it accessible to all the world. Although it will not provide an exhaustive review of all 110 translations (87 full book and 23 selections)1 distributed by the Church by spring 2015, it will examine a number of translations, versions, and editions, along with the eff orts to bring forth this sacred volume to “all nations, kindreds, tongues and people” (D&C 42:58). Ancient prophets declared that in the latter days the Lord would “com- mence his work among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth” (2 Nephi 30:8). Woods LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball has suggested that the word remember may be the most important word in the dictionary.1 This seems especially true with regard to centennial anniversaries. A reflective and joyful commemoration occurred on July 28, 2012, as hundreds of citizens of El Paso and Latter-day Saints came together to remember the compassionate acts rendered by El Pasoans a century ago when several thousand LDS men, women, and children fled Mexico and crossed the U.S. border to safety. These Mormon refugees were in great need, their lives uprooted and threatened due to the tumultuous events of the Mexican Revolution.2 The abruptness of the Mormon departure from Northern Mexico is apparent in the journal entries of John Walser, who lived in Colonia Juarez. In April 1912 he wrote: “My family are well, and we feel grateful to God for His great blessings, and protection over us. Colonia Juarez looks like a flower garden. The fruit trees all blossoming.” However,

Bednar Brigham Young University–Idaho Devotional October 31, 2006 Sister Bednar and I are grateful to be back on campus with you this afternoon. We love you. My general authority colleagues who are assigned to speak at BYU–Idaho devotionals often ask me if I have any advice for them as they prepare their messages. My answer is always the same. Do not underestimate the students at Brigham Young University– Idaho. Those young people will come to the devotional eager to worship and to learn the basic doctrines of the restored gospel. Those young men and women will come to the devotional with their scriptures in hand and ready to use them. They will come to the devotional prepared to seek learning by study and also by faith. Treat and teach those young men and women as who they really are. This afternoon I will take my own advice. During the time Sister Bednar and I served here in Rexburg, I often said from this pulpit that the greatest compliment I could give you as students is to treat you and to teach you as who you are spirit sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father with a particular and important purpose to fulfill in these latter days. I now plead and pray for the Holy Ghost to assist me and you as together we discuss the spirit and purposes of gathering. We are met together today to participate in the groundbreaking for two buildings on this campus—the addition to the Manwaring Center and the new auditorium.

    the church and translation joseph G stringham for it shall come to pass in that day that every man shall hear the fulnessfalness of the gospel in his own tongue and in his own language through those who are ordained unto this power dacd&c 9011 this verse is usually considered a missionary scripture but it has an additional meaning for those of us who work in the translation divisiondivisionsdivision11 of the church we feel that we are as important in fulfill- ing this scripture as are those who carry the books we translate though we are not ordained to our callings we are charged to translate the scriptures and manuals of the church for its members throughout the world it sobers us to see the influence of translations on those who read them and to realize the difficulty of touching peo- ples lives without them the translation of scriptures and other materials plays an increasingly important role in an expanding church WHERE WE HAVE BEEN the history of translation in the church began more than two years before the church was organized joseph smith received the gold plates from moroni in september 1827 and as early as december of that year had begun to translate some of the characters that were on them 2 joseph was a seer he had the arimurim and thummimThummim which among other things was an aid to translation a dramatic and valuable aid for a short while translation seemed to be a function of only the prophets calling this proved untrue A prophet is the first to receive revelation for the whole church but the fact that receiving joseph
