In this paper, we assess empirically the connection between genetic diversity and the performance of sport teams. Focusing on football (soccer), we built a novel dataset of national teams of European countries that have participated in the European and the World Championships since 1970. Determining the genetic diversity of national teams is based on the distance between the genetic scores of every players’ origins in the team. Genetic endowments for each player are recovered using a matching algorithm based on family names. Performance is measured at both the unilateral and bilateral level. Identification of the causal link relies on an instrumental variable strategy that is based on past immigration at the country level about one generation before. -

Pressmeddelande 2021-03-05 AIK Fotboll förlänger med Mikael Lustig AIK Fotboll är överens med den 34-årige landslagsbacken Mikael Lustig om en kontraktsförlängning och det nya avtalet gäller till och med den 31 december 2022. Mikael Lustig kom till AIK i augusti 2020 efter en lång karriär utomlands och har hittills spelat 14 tävlingsmatcher för klubben. Han står noterad för 87 A-landskamper för Sverige och har bland annat vunnit den skotska ligan åtta år i rad med Celtic FC. – Att vi i en rådande pandemi fick möjligheten att ta in en svensk landslagsspelare visar hur speciell en klubb som AIK är, att vi nu får möjligheten att förlänga relationen till Mikael är helt och hållet supportrarnas förtjänst. Mikael bidrog med sin kvalitet under hösten 2020 och har blivit en viktig pusselbit på och utanför fotbollsplanen. Jag är väldigt glad över att ha Mikael i den svartgula tröjan två säsonger till och hoppas snart att även alla supportrar får se honom live på plats, säger AIK Fotbolls sportchef Henrik Jurelius. – Jag trivs bra i AIK och har så gjort sedan första dagen här och min tanke har alltid varit att det skulle bli en förlängning. Masteruppsats ”Som man sår får man skörda” En retrospektiv studie av två talangmiljöer inom svensk fotboll Författare Filip Andersson Handledare Per Göran Fahlström Examinator: Owe Stråhlman Termin: VT20 Ämne Idrottsvetenskap Nivå: Avancerad Kurskod: 5IV31E English summary Title: “You reap what you sow” – a retrospective study of two talent environments in Swedish football From a retrospective perspective the purpose of this thesis was to study the talent identification and selection process in Swedish youth national teams and upper secondary school sports programmes. Particular focus was to identify age-related career patterns, and how it influence the transition rate to professional football. The thesis consists of two empirical part studies; (1) Upper secondary school sports programme and (2) Swedish youth national teams (U15-U21/U23). Birth data and career patterns of all players (1) (n=697) and (2) (n=1116) were traced and analysed. The relative age effect (RAE) were used as a theoretical framework. RAE refers to an asymmetry in the birth-date distribution, often favoring players born early in the selection year. The results showed that RAE is a factor in selection of pupils in upper secondary school sports programme and youth national teams. It was found that the RAE was higher the younger age of the players and differences between girls and boys were found in all youth national teams (U16-U21/U23), with a higher effect of RAE in the boys’ teams. Regarding career patterns the result showed that an early career start (U15-U16) was most common and the length of the career were short, primary representing one out of six possible youth teams. -
