On Our Doorstep Parts 1 and 2
ON 0UR DOORSTEP I MEMORIAM THE SECOD WORLD WAR 1939 to 1945 HOW THOSE LIVIG I SOME OF THE PARISHES SOUTH OF COLCHESTER, WERE AFFECTED BY WORLD WAR 2 Compiled by E. J. Sparrow Page 1 of 156 ON 0UR DOORSTEP FOREWORD This is a sequel to the book “IF YOU SHED A TEAR” which dealt exclusively with the casualties in World War 1 from a dozen coastal villages on the orth Essex coast between the Colne and Blackwater. The villages involved are~: Abberton, Langenhoe, Fingringhoe, Rowhedge, Peldon: Little and Great Wigborough: Salcott: Tollesbury: Tolleshunt D’Arcy: Tolleshunt Knights and Tolleshunt Major This likewise is a community effort by the families, friends and neighbours of the Fallen so that they may be remembered. In this volume we cover men from the same villages in World War 2, who took up the challenge of this new threat .World War 2 was much closer to home. The German airfields were only 60 miles away and the villages were on the direct flight path to London. As a result our losses include a number of men, who did not serve in uniform but were at sea with the fishing fleet, or the Merchant avy. These men were lost with the vessels operating in what was known as “Bomb Alley” which also took a toll on the Royal avy’s patrol craft, who shepherded convoys up the east coast with its threats from: - mines, dive bombers, e- boats and destroyers. The book is broken into 4 sections dealing with: - The war at sea: the land warfare: the war in the air & on the Home Front THEY WILL OLY DIE IF THEY ARE FORGOTTE. -
Aerobatic Teams of the World
AIRFORCES MONTHLY 16-pAGE SUPPLEMENT JUNE 2013 Military DisplayEdited by Mark Broadbent Teamsof the World 2013 IR FORCES operate display teams Ato showcase the raw skills of airmanship, precision and teamwork that underpin military flying and to promote awareness and recruitment. They also have an ambassadorial role, promoting an air force and country overseas. Many covered in this supplement display overseas each year and, in some cases, frequently undertake international tours. Teams are also used to promote a country’s aerospace industry, playing informal roles in sales campaigns. As financial constraints continue to affect air force budgets globally, it will be interesting to see if aerobatic teams can maintain their military, political and industrial value. GURPS WWII Classic
World War II raged from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the mountaintops of the Alps to the beaches of Normandy, across (and under) the high seas, and through the skies above it all. Soldiers in all of these places relied upon the machines of war: bombers, fighters, tanks, jeeps, ships, submarines, landing craft, and much more. GURPS WWII: Motor Pool has a huge variety of historically accurate vehicles from mankind’s greatest conflict. Many of the vehicles were common; others were rare or even unique. From the stodgy General Lee tank to the earliest helicopters and the wildly impractical Maus, Motor Pool has tons of new gear for every GURPS WWII player. Motor Pool also gathers in one place all the refinements to the vehicle design system that have evolved since the original corebook came out, as well as a new system to describe any WWII-era conveyance in a few simple steps. These additions include scores of new weapons to be fitted on your war machines – some historical and some products of the imagination. On top of all that, Motor Pool has advice on S how to integrate vehicles into a roleplaying T E campaign, with details on how vehicle crews V really lived and fought, from the difficulties of E supply to getting their machine moving at all. Gbm : L’Index N° 1 Les 1000 Premières Pages
NEWSLETTER December 2013
RCEA (SUSSEX) An Association for Retired Professional Engineers NEWSLETTER December 2013 President’s Message By the time this newsletter is distributed we will have completed the autumn session for our activities and looking forward to our Christmas lunch (Royal Mail permitting)! Our lecture sessions and the AGM have been attended on average by about 35 members who have enjoyed a varied programme which covered: An historical overview of the Ancient Sugar Mills of Cyprus (yes Cyprus!) It was, apparently, once a major world producer of sugar) A detailed description of the building of a scale model of a Sopwith Pup rotary aero engine. This one third scale model was available for viewing at the talk. We were assured that it had actually flown. This year our keynote event, the Cooch Memorial lecture was given by Douglas Hooley a director of the Tangmere military aviation museum. His topic covered the flying activities of the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team. The lecture was supported by an impressive selection of videos of the team in action. Our last lecture before Christmas was given by Alistair Sharpe and entitled “Industrial X Ray Inspection”. It covered the design of different types of x-ray sources and how they are used to verify the quality of many manufactured items. Session 2013/14 No 1 1 December 2013 We can now look forward to an equally interesting programme of lectures that has been put together for 2014 and, as we approach summer, visits. My thanks go out to our committee members who work tirelessly to ensure that we have a well organised, full and interesting programme of events throughout the year. -
The Political Decisions and Policy Leading to the Royal Australian Air Force Having No Fighters Or Interceptors for the Coming War Against Japan
The political decisions and policy leading to the Royal Australian Air Force having no fighters or interceptors for the coming war against Japan James Rorrison BA; Honours Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2015 KEY WORDS Australian aircraft industry; Australia’s Air Defence; Beaufort; Sir Winston Churchill; John Curtin; Billy Hughes; Interwar politics; Joseph Lyons; Sir Robert Menzies; Messerschmitt; Milestones in military aircraft; Mustang; Royal Air Force; Royal Australian Air Force; United States Army Air Corps; War against Japan; Warplanes; Weapons of World War I; Weapons of World War II; Wirraway; World War I; World War II; Zero. i ABSTRACT One of the most dangerous, illusional and deceptive of Australian pre-World War 11 beliefs was that the British represented a powerhouse of military protection against any foreign intimidation. In reality they impersonated a defence system without substance and an actual siphon of Australia’s military resources towards their own ends while offering only a potentially high-risk strategic alliance that helped bring Australia to the brink of disaster. As just one outcome on 18 January 1942, over two months after the Japanese air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, less than half a squadron of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Wirraway lightly armed training planes alighted from an airstrip at Rabaul on New Britain ostensibly to intercept a Japanese naval air armada of over one hundred modern military aircraft, the outcome of which was a national tragedy. The Australian-made and manned Wirraways were shot from the sky or crash-landed with the loss of most of their crews.
