Shantou University Law School A fully-funded Exchange Program for McGill Law students 1 Shantou Shantou is one of the 5 Special Economic Zones in China, located in the east of Guangdong Province. It has a total area of 2,064 km2 with a population of 5,271,100. Shantou City has jurisdiction over Nan'ao Island and six districts, namely, Jinping, Longhu, Chenghai, Chaoyang and Chaonan. The average annual temperature of Shantou city is 21 to 22 degrees Celsius with the lowest temperature above 0 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature in the mid 30 degrees Celsius (which are usually recorded in mid-July and early August). • 2 Shantou University An Exchange* Program at Shantou University (STU) for McGill Law students. Fully-funded by a gift from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Canada) Coverage includes airfare, accommodations, tuition, travel to Shanghai and Beijing. * Exchange word used only for Shantou Univeristy; however, for McGill terminology this is an Independent Study Away Program. • 3 Shantou University Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a key comprehensive university under the "211 Project" in the Guangdong Province. It is a university co-developed by the Ministry of Education, the People’s Government of the Guangdong Province, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is also the only public university in China which is strongly supported by a private foundation—the Li Ka Shing Foundation. • 3 Shantou University STU consists of the following 9 colleges: College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, Law School, Business School, Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communications, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, School of Continuing Education, and the Medical College. The Medical College consists of the following 5 affiliated hospitals: The First Affiliated Hospital, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Cancer Hospital, Mental Health Center, and the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. • 4 Shantou University With strong efforts over the past three decades, Shantou University has created a welcoming, rigorous environment for training students to meet contemporary social needs and individual aspirations, and laid a solid foundation for sustainable educated development. STU is a typical Chinese walled campus with many open facilities, including open-air sports fields, new Life Sciences building, student residences and enclosed sports complex. The language of instruction is Mandarin with a few courses offered in English by the Law School and College of Liberal Arts. • 6 STU LS The Law School was established in 1983 and now contains two departments: Law and Public Administration. It provides Undergraduate education, LLM (from 2016) and MPA programs. It is committed to the view that law and good governance should be valued not only for themselves but also should have moral purpose and assist with finding solutions for social problems and more generally promoting sustainable and equitable development. The Law School believes that one of the most important tasks of law and administration, and the study of these disciplines, is to serve the public good, especially in making the lives of ordinary and disadvantaged people better. • 10 The Law School has taken a leading role law school within China in developing ADR programmes. These benefit not only its own law students but also for legal professionals, civil servants and others with a concern to refurbish and develop their professional skills in the area of dispute resolution. The Cheung Kong Centre for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution (CKND) is a leading national centre for research and training in this area, and has established a significant books series on ADR jointly with Renmin University Law School. Important programmes of cooperation have been developed with the courts in Dongguan, the Judicial Reform Office of the Supreme People’s Court, the National Judges Training College, CIETAC, and the Singapore Mediation Centre. • 12 Academic Activities I Lectures The Law School of Shantou University regularly invite law experts from home and from abroad to give lectures on the most intensively-debated, professional and ‘hot’ topics in legal education and public administration. These serve as a platform for sharing ideas as well as for profiting from the wisdom of various academic schools. Since 2002, around 114 academic lectures have been given by scholars at home and from the US, the UK, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and HK at STU. Conferences The Law School of Shantou University also sponsors and participates Conference held both at home and abroad with the purposes of fostering our students and faculty’s interests in legal study and research, and providing opportunities for them to learn from and to exchange ideas with the leading scholars.
