PHILIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN OFFICIAL :28–40

Philip Who was Philip in the ? Philip was the name of one of ’ 12 apostles (see Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16; John 6:4-7), although we don’t know a great deal about him. But Philip was also the name of a different individual in the early church in Jerusalem. It is this leader in the Jerusalem church we will consider here. Along with Stephen and five other men, Philip was selected by the church to help with the distribution of food to widows so that that the apostles could be free to continue preaching God’s Word (see :1-7).

PHILIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN After Stephen was stoned to death for being a faithful witness (see 6:8–7:60), Philip traveled to Samaria and preached the there. His ministry in Samaria was fruitful and effective (see 8:4-13). God then directed him to “go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza” (v. 26). Philip obeyed, and there he met and witnessed to “an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians.” This official was “in charge of her entire treasury” (v. 27). The Ethiopian was riding in his chariot reading some of ’s prophetic words about Jesus, and Philip helped him see that Jesus was God’s Messiah. The man believed in Jesus and was baptized (vv. 27-39). It is interesting that Philip served in the church in Jerusalem, witnessed and ministered in Samaria, and then won a man to who was on his way home to Africa, which was far beyond Jerusalem, the place where the gospel first was proclaimed. The geography of Philip’s ministry reminds us of Jesus’ words regarding the spread of the gospel in :8.

After Philip baptized the Ethiopian official, the Spirit of God took him away. He “appeared in Azotus, and he was traveling and evangelizing all the towns until he came to Caesarea,” where he apparently settled. Azotus, also called Ashdod, was a town on the southern coast of Palestine between Gaza and Joppa.

Approximately 20 years later we hear from Philip again. In :8-9 Luke wrote, “The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of , who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him. This man had four daughters who prophesied.” This visit took place near the end of Paul’s third missionary journey. Paul, The Apostle Paul was not one of the original 12 disciples of Jesus. His first encounter with Jesus came after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. In fact, before his conversion, Paul was persecuting the early church and considered himself an enemy of this person named Jesus. But all that changed after Jesus confronted Paul on the Road to Damascus as we read about in Acts chapter 9. Jesus called Paul to be “an apostle to the Gentiles” (Rom. 11:13) and used Paul to expand the church and write many of the books. The activity pages we’ve gathered here will help a child learn about this important servant of the Lord. PAUL, THE PERSECUTOR, ACTS 8:1 3 At the end of , Stephen is stoned as “a young man named Saul” stood by watching. “Saul” was Paul’s Hebrew name while “Paul” was his Greek name. Paul was a Pharisee (Phil. 3:5) and very zealous (Gal. 1:14) for his Jewish faith. This zeal drove him to attack the young church. In fact, Acts 8:3 tells us, “Saul... was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.” Paul was a vehement enemy of the church, but he had no idea how his life was going to change because of Jesus! PAUL ON THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS, ACTS 9:1-9 Paul’s zeal for persecuting the church led him to travel to Damascus. While on his way, Paul was blinded by a bright light and confronted by the voice of Jesus. Paul obeyed Jesus’ instructions to go to Damascus and wait. This arrogant and zealous young man had met his match in the risen Christ! He was soon baptized and became a zealous follower of Jesus. PAUL, THE MISSIONARY, —28 In Acts 13:1-3, God called and the church set apart Saul (Paul) and “for the work I have called them to.” Much of the remainder of the Book of Acts is about Paul’s missionary journeys and the expansion of the church into the Roman world and beyond the Jewish race. PAUL, THE PASTOR AND WRITER Paul established many churches during his life and ministry. He continued to travel, however, and that made it necessary for Paul to stay in touch with his beloved churches through the ministry of friends and letters he would write to specific congregations and individuals. We have 13 of these letters in existence today. In the New Testament these 13 letters are grouped together and begin with the Book of Romans and conclude with Philemon. So much of what we know about the early church and New Testament theology was shaped by and comes out of the ministry and writings of Paul, The Apostle. We can be thankful for the way God used this significant biblical figure. Connect the Dots

Peter, The Apostle Peter was one of the earliest disciples and is featured prominently in the as a somewhat quirky and self-sufficient leader among the disciples. Peter is one of the primary characters in The Book of Acts and wrote two New Testament letters to Christians in the early church (1 & 2 Peter). He is a towering biblical character children need to know about. We have collected here an extensive selection of Bible activity pages about Peter, the Apostle that can help kids learn some important lessons.

PETER MEETS JESUS, LUKE 5:1-11 This simple, self-sufficient fisherman didn’t know just how much his life was about to change when he encountered Jesus on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Like many of us, Peter chose to follow Jesus, but would spend the rest of his life growing in maturity and his for the Savior. PETER PREACHES ON THE DAY OF , :37-41 Not many days after the resurrection and ascension, the Holy Spirit was sent just as Jesus promised. Peter preached and around 3,000 people were saved. The coming of the Spirit transformed Peter into the earliest leader of the budding church. Like Peter, we need the Holy Spirit living in us to make us all God desires. PETER AND THE LAME MAN, :1-10 Many of the Apostles demonstrated God’s power by healing people. It was evident that God was continuing the ministry of Jesus through these men as He established the young church. God may not always choose to bring healing today, but His power is just as real and can flow through us to demonstrate His ability to change lives. PETER HEALED TABITHA, ACTS 9:36-43 Tabitha () was a beloved living in Joppa. She did many good things for people there. Peter was summoned to her and healed her. As a result, many of the people in that area trusted in the Lord. Tabitha’s life and Peter’s actions demonstrate the power of love that was present in the early church. They’re good examples for us as well! PETER’S RESCUE FROM JAIL, ACTS 12:1-17 The early church encountered resistance and persecution. Peter was imprisoned soon after he preached on the Day of Pentecost, but God still had plans for Peter and miraculously rescued him from jail. God is able to protect us for His purposes. PETER WROTE LETTERS, 1 & 2 PETER Peter ministered to and through the church for many years. One of his most lasting acts of ministry was the letters he wrote that we call 1 & 2 Peter. Through his letters, Peter encouraged believers and challenged them to remain faithful to God’s love and calling. Priscilla & Aquila Aquila and Priscilla were a married couple who were tent makers. After , emperor of Rome, expelled from the city, Aquila and Priscilla left, and while in Corinth they met Paul. Since they were tent makers as Paul was, the three could work together in the tent making trade, and they did so (see Acts 18:1-3). They also were Christians. Did Aquila and Priscilla become believers before they met Paul, or after? Did the apostle win them to Christ? We don’t know the timing or the circumstances of their coming to Christ, but Scripture does tell us that they partnered with Paul not only in the business of tent making, but also in efforts to spread the gospel. They traveled with Paul to (see vv. 18-19). After arrived in that city, the two worked together to teach and disciple him (see vv. 24-26).

Here are some additional interesting facts about Aquila and Priscilla.

A church met in their home (see Rom. 16:3-5; 1 Cor. 16:19).

Apparently they were effective in ministering to the Gentiles (see Rom. 16:3-4).

They put their lives on the line for Paul (see Rom. 16:3-4). We are not certain of the details of this incident, but it is possible they did so during the trouble that arose in Ephesus involving a silversmith named Demetrius (see :23-41). The name Aquila means “eagle.” The name Priscilla is related to the name Prisca (see Rom. 16:3; 2 Tim. 4:19), which means “primitive,” thus “worthy or esteemed.” ` In Scripture, whenever Aquila or Priscilla is mentioned by name, the other also is mentioned. Usually Priscilla’s name appears first (see Acts 18:18,26; Rom. 16:3; 2 Tim. 4:19), but not always (see Acts 18:2; 1 Cor. 16:19); the reason for this is not clear in Scripture.
